I fully endorse the BBC using you as the host for history programs !
Because we don’t have enough people mangling Scottish history.
I second that. Your voice is very engaging.
SAME!! I am one of those people who let you roll in the background while I'm working on mailing out orders. :) Your voice is amazing, and I like absorbing the lessons I've already heard once.
Jessica, would you ever consider doing a collaboration with Xiran Jay Zhao on historical queerness? They have so much knowledge on queer Chinese rulers.
That would be so cool!
I second that!!!
Yessss, that’s a dream collab!
She’s more or less retired from RUclips so I doubt it
Dream collab 😍
Please do a video on Frida Khalo! She is an iconic bisexual artist who was also disabled. When her husband cheated on her, she cheated back, with the SAME woman of course.😂
She did a video on her already. It won’t let me post the link, but search: The bisexual artist who changed the world from bed//Frida Kahlo
I;m pretty sure Jessica already has a video about Frida Kahlo!
Teenage Ludwig writing to his crush about just finishing writing in his diary about how happy and lovesick he was in his absence is such a mood.
R.i.p. 🪦
Thank you for saying that asexual people can still engage in sexual activities. It really makes me feel seen. I am married and have children but am on the asexual spectrum.
The cover photo of Jessica in a crown is A plus! 👑
I love her Queer history lessons.
Queen Kristina is my absolute favourite. We’ll never know for sure how she would identify or label herself today, but IMO it’s possible that she/he/they was biromantic and either ace or demi and probably also genderfluid to some extent. So happy to hear you’ll have a video about her soon! I’ve been researching her and transcribing and translating her letters for years and she is endlessly fascinating.
I was literally watching a bunch of royal history videos. This got uploaded at the perfect time for me!
I was wondering if Queen Kristina would be brought up in this video, and I'm delighted to hear that there will be a video all about her in a few week's time!
Really interesting video, I am mildly interested in both history and lgbtq+ things, so this was amazing
I agree about Queen Christina. When I saw the movie clip of Greta Garbo playing her, I thought that Jessica can make a video about Queen Christina. So glad that video will be shown soon! 😊❤️
Kristina is my favourite. I’ve known about her for ten years but when I started researching her in depth five years ago it was life-changing. She needs to be talked about more!
Great video 🌸 and your french prononciation was good ! 👍 Also not sure about the historical acuracy of what I am going to say but as a french the first queer monarch that comes to my mind is Philippe d'Orléans (brother of Louis XIV), known to wear dresses and fancy both men and women. I think he also supported Julie d'Aubigny/ mademoiselle de maupin, about whom you did a video 2 years ago.
Oh, we missed Frederick the great... the greatest King to play the flute.
I would love for you to cover queer monarchs outside of Europe! Asia, Africa, North and South America, and the Pacific Islands have such rich histories of existence pre- and post- colonization!
Someone already mentioned Xiran Jay Zhao as a possible collaborator, and I heartily second that!
Jessica was missing, the biggest lesbian queen 👑
Great video as always.❤️❤️
Jessica, could you consider making a video about the artist Tove Jansson? She was a writer, painter, and sculptor Finnish and Swedish (if I'm not mistaken) who was a great artistic queer icon in Finland. Her sexuality also had a lot of influence on her art, in her books, she created characters that have an LGBT subtext (the characters are Too-ticky, Vifslan and Tofslan, Snufkin and maybe Toffle and Miffle)
Or you can make a video about the writer Arnold Lobel. ( he was gay)
Both of these artists practically "made my childhood"
Just suggestions, I send hugs :))
There are a lot of queer classic book authors/illustrators! Maurice Sendak, Tomie DePaola, Edward Gorey, James Marshall, Margaret Wise Brown, Ann M. Martin, etc! It could make a good list video similar to this style :)
I'm so sorry to hear you've had a difficult month. Best wishes to you, Claudia and Rupert for brighter times ahead.
Fun Fact: The original KJV Bible doesn't have the word Homosexual in it. And while it does call male on male sex an "abomination" in Leviticus, it also calls eating pork an abomination, yet I've never seen a Christian refuse bacon XD
I once knew a devout Biblical literalist who was an out and proud lesbian. There is nothing whatsoever in the Bible that prohibits sex between women.
😂
@@ilznidiotic Yep. It doesn't and the passages about men being with men are just because of stuff that went on at the time (like raping your male slave). It has nothing to do with modern day LGBT+ relationships :3
Bigoted christians just cherry pick whatever they can to spread hate.
And have no problem with pork, seafood or mixed cloth. Hypocrites.
I've seen quite a lot. They call themselves "vegetarian" or "vegan". Also, not so few of them identify as gay.
I have sex and I'm ace is honestly one of the most affecting things ive heard in ace content and discourse as a demisexual person. It reminds me that when moving beyond compulsory sexuality, its a choice to do something with another person, and that any choice has several motivations. Attraction+desire are just some of them, and i am fully capable of deciding i want to sleep with someone without feeling a compulsion to jump their bones, whether it be for sensual closeness/touch, because, like doing chores i hate for a partner with disabilities, it ultimately brings both of us closer, for stress relief, to celebrate, to scratch an itch so to speak, or just because I know i will feel fulfilled and satisfied with myself when agreeing to please somebody else as an act of service, none of which have to do with me being demisexual, but all of which have easily gotten tied into knots with my sexuality. If allosexual people can set a schedule for sex when life gets predicatable for the express purpose of staying connected regardless of current sex drive and attraction, its such a joke to suggest its somehow crazy that ace people couldnt also have sex irrespective of their sexual attraction. I struggled for a long time with the fact that sex was intellectually interesting to me and that the sensory aspects were so engaging for my undiagnosed autistic and adhd mind, even while i was waiting to "go all the way" because i was suppsed to feel a particular way beforehand, something that just didnt happen. I enjoy sex, and my platonic and romantic attraction are so profoundly similar, but its really easy to get stuck in my head about the fact that my enjoyment is typically far more in the camp of exercise, having a nice meal in a pleasant environment, cuddling, wrestling with a friend, and playing word/board games than what it seems to be for allosexual people. But, im ace AND enjoy having sex, and that means my experience will be uniquely my own, and it doesnt need to be compared to anyone else's.
Always love your history videos. Can't wait for the one in 2 weeks.
I loved this! It's a great format for figures where there's less of a lengthy story or to compare/contrast.
Yay, I love historical queer gossip 😀
Yes! I love your queer history videos 🤩❤️❤️
Sorry it’s been a bad month, but your history videos are always such a hoot and real edutainment 😂🙌🙌🙌 would LOVE a princesses only video 🧐✨
❤❤❤❤ Love when you dive into history. Great video, can't wait for part 2. 🎉
Here I am in the States still recovering from a migraine that hit suddenly and severely about 11pm last night. Finally faded enough to sleep around 2:30am - on top of my normal insomnia (I have to look up playing The Sims @Jessica !). So I slept about 4 hours. Now I’m watching your video trying to fall back asleep and hopefully stave off any rebound headaches. Thank you for your incredibly well researched content and melodious voice that will, hopefully, lull me back to sleep.
Fascinating as always Jessica.
I LOVE these videos! I am a huge history nerd, so this makes me so happy 🥰.
Always interesting to learn ^^ thank you for sharing
Thank you for pointing out cool historic people!
It's so sad some people want to erase history!
Thank you for another amazing video, Jessica! Your research and presentation are so good! You make learning fun!
I'm so glad Ludwig made it in, I remember commenting about him on another video. I share the same birthday as him and am queer af too😂Neuschwanstein in gorgeous in person
Your French pronunciation is actually really good! Thanks for this great video ❤
Greetings fellow Jessica Background Noise Enjoyers!
Cannot wait for your video on Christina!
Love this video and your content in general. Please keep making content when you appear on my RUclips feed I can't help but smile 😊
Came here to say the same!
Would love a video with royals generally. Or just interesting historical examples generally. Love the work you do!
Instead of "First Gentleman of the King's Chamber" they could have just said "male consort".
"Jolly Romps!"
Please say this often from time to time! Love your videos! Thankyou for producing them!
Would love to see you do a series on queer queens (& kings) w/ an episode for each person/reign. Thank you for the well-researched education! I hope things are going better for your family love.
Looping forward for the next Video:)
I don't have ad block, you have a delightful, beautiful voice, and I sincerely hope things settle/get better! ❤
this is a fantastic video, i’m a history major and love that someone took the time to really dig into all these stories!
Would you consider doing a video on Frederick the Great of Prussia?
Loved that you started this video with king James I and his lovers. Especially since now there's a wonderful and raunchy show about him and George Villiers called Mary & George!
Great video, really enjoyed it, can't wait for the others!
You’re a PhD level historian. So much information and perspective. Thank you!
Wonderful video!! 💜
TW: Abusive Parents, Execution, N@zis.
Another very interesting queer King that wasn't mentioned in this Video is King Friedrich II. von Preußen (Fredrick II. of Prussia) or Friedrich, der Große (Fredrick the Great). His life started in 1712 and took soon a gay turn, as he planed to escape his abusive father, who viewed Friedrichs passion for music and the arts as effiminate and often abused him physically, by running away to France with his "close friend" Hans Herrmann von Katte, when he was only eightteen. Sadly, they were found out and Katte was executed for treason, while Friedrich was forced to watch. Friedrich in turn was banished and only allowed to return, after he married a woman, who he despised. But as Friedrichs Father died and he became King, things radically changed for the better, for Prussia and for the King. He did a lot of social reforms, introduced the potato as food in his country and made prussia one of the most progressive states in europe, still an absolut monarchy, but with liberal principles like "no toture" or "less censorship". Militarly, he managed to at least not lose the seven years war, wich has got to count for something. But also his personal life changed, as Friedrich had many close male friends, with a lot of rumors about the nature of these relationships, with some of them almost certainly being romantic and/or sexual, while keeping his wife as far away as possible, never producing an heir. Here, Micheal Fredersdorf needs to be mentionend as a personal Valet and Lover to the King. Friedrich also played the flute and wrote a lot of Philosophy and other works, that sometimes seemed to have a gay touch. I also need to mention some antisemitic Policies during his reign and also the fact, that Friedrich was a raging mysoginist. But he still put Prussia on the map as a leading power in europe and was remembered after his death in 1786 as a competent King and, ironcally, as a very masculine Man. After his death, people tried to erase his homosexuality, as it did not fit with his image, wich in an even weirder Twist of Irony led to the Nazis embracing him, his military Achievements, and his Manliness in their propaganda. All in all, Friedrich, der Große was a competent leader and also undoubtibly very gay, despite what a lot of people try to tell you.
Frederick the Great, out the gate, First Servant of State, oblique attack tactics ain't exactly straight 😉
Great video, was shocked how you did the pronunciations, I struggle with those with my hearing. Way to go. Please give us out more would be nice if you dis vintage look while doing these.
Actually, most of the German ones were rather wrong. Which is absolutely okay, if one doesn't speak the language and is also deaf!
But you really shouldn't take them as an example for the right pronunciation.
@@elektra121 I understand and agree but when I tried to say they names my father laughed, he is fluent in German and felt she did for better then myself. I want to encourage thouse that are hard of hearing and deaf to keep trying.
Dear lady, you are a joy, and this video is a much needed reprieve. Thank you!
Yay for LGBT+ monarchs! Ludwig II is a historical figure I am fascinated with, and really enjoyed learning more about his personal life. Also, that letter was very gay...
And your French pronuciation is really good!
I would love to see more listed videos and I'm looking forward to the follow-up video as well as to the Royals video where you put the princesses in as well.
But I also like the History 101 Videos. Well I love all your videos sooooo yeah. 🤍
This video keeps on reminding me of Young Royals! I'm sure Wille would love to see that he's not alone in his struggles =)
This was so fun and I loved every minute! I would love to see a video on all the queer princesses. 👀👀🩷🩷 Thanks Jessica!
I know he has been mentioned but, Friedrich II of Prussia. His favorite residence Sanssouci was a woman-free zone during his lifetime, (basically a prince's man cave). It was his passion project. He dictated the whole design and decoration of palace and grounds as a place he could relax with his closest male friends.
Thank you Jessica for all your beautiful work! So cool and interesting
I hadn't put together until watching your video and doing some math that three European dynasties died out within 15 years of each other. Henry III was the last of the house of Valois-Angoulême in 1589, then the Rurik dynasty ended in Russia (1598), and the Tudors in 1603 with the death of Elizabeth I. That is somewhat wild. After all, events in Poland and Lithuania (which Henry III briefly ruled) contributed to Ivan the Terrible's state of mind and subsequent murder of his more promising heir, and of course James I/VI's mother was married into Henry's family before returning to Scotland. Being a royal in the 16th century was a pretty small world. You have to wonder what it felt like to people of the time.
I'm not a fan of history videos normally but you make them super interesting, I could listen to you explain the history of dust and find it fascinating 😅❤
Can't wait to see what's talked about next time :)
I think I prefer the longer in depth videos about specific people, but these give chances to learn about people who wouldn't get their own full video, so I'm definitely not complaining
I can't wait for the video on royals and leaders from the various kingdoms and empires from all around the world! Especially in non-Eurocentric settings.
Frederick the Great of Prussia who growing up was disliked by his father for being interested in poetry and philosophy rather than soldiering and combat. His father, tragically, arrested Fredrick and his male lover as they attempted to flee to England and forced Fredrick to witness the execution. Frederick then went on to be one of the greatest military commanders of the era even inspiring some of Napoleon’s tactics all while struggling with his own conflicts and building an evolving Prussian state. He had flaws obviously and instituted unfair laws including banning women from positions of power and his court.
6:20 THE BLOODY MEDICI FAMILY IS EVERYWHERE
they had a queen of france. They had a pope. They funded Dante, Galileo Galilei, Leonardo davinci. They’re kinda responsible for the renaissance. And most western science. They also financed the guy who invented music notes.
Genuinely. This family was terrifyingly powerful. They also brought us the ninja turtles, because the most famous Medici hired Leonardo, michealangelo, Rafael and a couple other artists and basically had them work and live together in a court yard.
Side note- from their sculptures, it is obvious all of these men were very gay, given the way men’s bodies were placed erotically, in very intense detail, and women are barbie dolls, anatomy wise. And most of the time when they sculpted women who were supposed to be attractive, they are just men with boobs added on.
It means I came to the conclusion that these famous white artist men definitely hooked up at one point.
Anyway, Medici family. They’re interesting, that’s for sure.
Very interesting topic. I clicked immediately
If you haven't made one already, I think a video about queer ancient romans would be really interesting! I love classics and this video made me think of at least 3 emperors who were NOT cishet to say the least :)
12:04 to 12:18 - Hey, I just want to let you know that the English subtitles disappeared there for me. Thanks for doing this video, it's fascinating! (Me, chanting: Queen Anne! Queen Anne! Please talk about plus-sized disabled sapphic Queen Anne!)
I enjoyed this educational video! Some of your side view comments cracked me up. 🤣 I was wondering if James I was the same king that goes with the KJV Bible, and you answered my question. 🙂
i love this listed style video!
Always love Jessica's sass.
Just keep swimming Jessica 🐟 you’ve got this!
Jessica-- you started this video with James I/Vi of England/Scotland. However, i believe there were several other gay monarchs between 1066 and James I, including one of William the Conquerer's sons. Could you please research them and do a video? Thank so much for your excellent work!! ❤😊👍😘🌈
I am so happy to see you posting this week. Sorry you have had an incredibly hard month.. next month will be better, I hope.
loving all your videos!
I would love to see a similar video about LGBT+ democratic leaders ❤
This was a great video.
I love the queer history videos.
I did enjoy this video.
But I also enjoy an entire video dedicated to an individual, specifically so I remember exactly who the story was about. My particular learning style works better with more separation, but I could visualize how many monarchs wete obviously queer, and brings up questions on how many were good at keeping it secret. Lots of queer people. I love it.
People: "You made me the happiest man on earth."
Historians: "They were great study companions."
"and they were roommates"
Brilliant point about exporting colonialist homophobia & trans phobia !
🎶and we'll never be royals🎶
It don’t run in our blood
I hope a future episode includes James Brooke, a British sailor who stumbled his way into becoming the Rajah of Sarawak (part of modern-day Malaysia) and was very gay
She has posted!!!
Love all of the posts. ❤Would like to hear stories about NYC .Edie Windsor, Thea Spyer.60s,70s
Jessica, would you consider making a video about Sunak’s comment “man is a man and a woman is a woman”?
You actually said Nogaret very very well!
Amazing video, as always, Bavarian Gay King was my and my wife’s favorite 😆🤙🏻 would really love you to make a video about Prince Eugene of Savoy who gave us another fairytale castle - Belvedere palace (fairytale castles - sponsored by homosexuality for centuries 😆)
I think King Frederick the Great of Prussia was bisexual. According to Epic Rap Battles of History
He was very much gay. If you can say it about one of all German speaking rulers, it has to be him.
I love these kind of videos
Sorry things have been so hard Jessica. I hope life gets more sorted soon.
As a queer French person who was always obsessed with history, Henri III, Louis XIII and Philippe d'Orléans (Louis XIV's brother) were a huge obsession of mine in middle school. I read everything tehre was to read about them and then talked about it to anyone who would listen.
Well done!
Mia Mulder had a great video on Queen Christina. Looking forward to hearing your perspective!
Honestly, I've always found reading about or listening to someone drone on about history incredibly boring but somehow your historical videos manage to keep my attention the full way through. I kinda liked this lots of different people in one video as opposed to a single person per video style but that might just be my ADHD talking. I also have a question for you if you ever see this comment - do you ever read fiction books? Specifically do you ever read queer romance books? They don't even have to have romance as the main focus but I feel like hearing book reviews or your favorite queer book characters in a video format would be incredibly interesting. The first one off the top of my head is "red, white, and royal blue" by Casey McQuiston because it features a queer European monarch which is right on brand for this video.
7:46 "...Non"
😂💀
How about King Richard the Lionheart? (who I know best as Maid Marion's uncle in Disney's Robin Hood) during the crusades, he's said to have had to publicly apologise twice for sodomy that he committed with the King of France.
Ooh!!! Can I please ask- Can you do the affair of the cut sleeve???
Love this
Thanks!
Thank you so much! 🥰
Jessica, unexpectedly as an American bisexual woman, I am receiving solace for tRump. Clearly we Americans have once again been extraordinarily naive regarding the competence of a “leader” and the shrugged shoulders of those in power regarding competence. BUT historically, we are not alone! The wisdom of the comment, “Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.” resonates!
Sorry. And here we US Americans are. So essentially ignorant of European history, here we are. Suffering under the extraordinary incompetence of a man desperately delusional who believes that he is not only destined for greatness, but also has the inalienable right to claim it. No matter what.
I have two more Kings to look into: William II "Rufus" of England
and Friedrich II "the Great" of Prussia
If you ever want to make a video about queer artist, you should look into the poet Arthur Rimbaud !
He was in a relationship with Paul Verlaine, and it was a big part of his early life.
Sadly, I don’t think it was a healthy relationship since it ended with Verlaine shooting twice at him, injuring him
Do you have a Patreon?
Can you do American "royals" like Carnegies & Morgan?
I really like the listical style videos!
Everyone on your team including you is amazing and wonderful
Hey, Anderson Cooper is a Vanderbilt!
@@erraticonteuse woah woah I had no idea 💜 thank you for the info
Why are subtitles/closed captions not available? As a person who is hearing-impaired watching a video created by a person who is hearing-impaired, this seems rather odd. Does anyone know the answer?
It might be a timing thing. They are available for me now.
They can sometimes take a bit of time before they appear. They seem to be working now. Though, there is a bit at 12:05-12:17 that has no caption, for some reason.
Hey Jessica! I just wanted to say that at 14:50 you say that Czar Ferdinand was born on February 22 but the subtitles say February 26. I just wanted to let you know so that if possible you could correct whichever one is incorrect so that anyone watching who relies on the subtitles or audio can properly enjoy the wonderful history lessons!
I'll have to come back and watch this when it has captions 😔
They're working now
