[NISSAN] Next generation steering technology

- A conventional steering system directs tire movements by transmitting steering inputs to the tires via a mechanical link. Nissan's next-generation steering technology reads the driver's intentions from steering inputs and controls the vehicle's tire movements via electronic signals.

The unit appears to retain a steering shaft, with the addition of a clutch. I would suspect that if there is signal loss the clutch would activate and you would have manual steering. Actually it makes sense that the clutch would only disengage when the system was powered so that the vehicle could be steered with a battery disconnected for service.
no, there is no mechanical linkage. so therefore if it fails you wont get signals through the electrical terminals.
nissan.......u can still surprise us after all this yrs. thanks nissan for building such wonderful cars
This system seems appropriate for luxury cars. I like to correct for the inclination of the road myself. I like to feel the texture through the steering wheel. I like compensating for the strong gush o pressure of an incoming semi. It gives me confidence to drive fast, knowing that I am in full control of my car, and I know what the wheels are doing at all time. This system is good if you lack the confidence or skill to to this yourself. Or if you fit it to a luxury car.
This is awesome, hopefully we'll see this technology debut on the upcoming G.
Delivers responsive performance by controlling tire and steering angles inputs independently
Be interesting to see if those wheels will be straight on the corrigations in outback Australia!!
I have some concerns of this for example; If PCB's controlling hardware in a Nuclear reactor plant can be hacked and controlled or sabotaged. whats to stop it happening with someones vehicle. also if you take away the feedback from a un-smooth road. the driver will be unaware and wont react instinctively to the driving conditions. Also electronic shelf life is much shorter than a conventional steering rack, with DBW throttles its ok, it can just go to 0% on failsafe. but with steering what does it do? return to center? shut car down? all which would have dangerous outcomes.
Honestly, I knew this would happen someday... it is great for those drivers who aren't "very good" at driving, but true drivers definitely want to feel the road's surface. What happens if the feedback unit fails or when you turn the steering to the right, the signal gets mixed and turns left? With a normal steering, this will only happen if the steering column breaks which is highly unlikely.
Su tecnologia es muy buena para mejorar sus automoviles
wow amazing.. i like nissan
Perhaps there's a way of using the original mechanical operation as a backup?
Japanese family gaming console music.
Great idea
Nissan Motor Co. has announced plans to equip some of its high-end Infiniti brand luxury vehicles with new steer-by-wire technology. This new technology would replace the mechanical systems that link the steering wheel to the front wheels of the vehicle allowing the driver control over the car.
Haider Zaman yes that's a great idea, remove the ability to steer the car if something in the steering rack goes wrong, that's fucking brilliant I can't see any way for steer by wire to fail......
Good idea but, what happens the electrical sensors fail like most electronic devices. It appears the sensors are driven by AI source, which means can it be hacked? I am hoping there is a contingency plan for this.
How do I steer the car when towing in case the battery/electrics are dead?
when there is no battery or electrics, clutch kicks in
This is so weird driving my Q. It really is literally like a video game.
I think You never drived on a bad road. So many provlems will be solved with new control system. I hope they will install it very soon on the new Infiniti cars...
Good video! Like it!
Conventional steering with hydraulic servo is the best for driving and feeling the road...
This is clean..
But doesn’t it take some of the fun out of driving? You can’t really feel the road with drive-by-wire.
that is scaring... the steering wheel give me a feeling of what's going on the road... You can not remove that feeling. I will feel unsafe with this system...
orsopacato there is a servo motor on the steering wheel to provide tactile feedback.
Airplane have been doing this since the 90s. If you don't feel save then I recommend you to not fly.
Fly by wire came out in 1930. F16 is controlled by Fly-by-wire....
Electronic controls have kept airplanes in the air for decades.
yea, and when they fail they fall out of the sky.
@@mraperish yet flying is still the safest way to travel.
yea I'll stick to my steering rack that actually gives me direct control if the car, when that car shorts out and the steering stops I hope I am never near it
Clutch automatically closes if a fault is deteced by the ECUs
Next things you know peoples stearing wheel is going to get stuck. Everything electronic has been pretty bad. Electronic throttle. throttle response is slower, and sometimes the pedal got stuck. Real smart to go electronic on that shit.
Buut, what if I WANT to feel the road's imperfections? What if I'm a good driver and don't need Nanny looking over me? What if I'm a good driver and USE that sensory input from the wheel to change how I control weight transfer? What if this technology affects Nissan-ness (The joy of driving)?
Finally, this is good for the average driver just not the ones that take the time to become better drivers.
human error accounts for far more accidents than electronic error. "Feeling the road" isn't a good reason to have highways be unsafe and the odds of an electric circuit randomly crossing wiring and sending a left signal as a right signal is about as far less likely than your brain doing the same thing.
no offence but this is actually bad.since it uses wire circuit, the electronic signals have a big chance of going wrong
Just more to go wrong, of course
guess there's not much excuse for the elderly not driving. i've not felt this happy since the kinect or since the euphoria in gta iv
This seems like a horrid idea. Let's take a common game controller to compare to this new "analogue controller" for the wheels. Often in controllers, the analogue sticks bug out after a while due to residue or something else getting in the system. The controller is then unpredictable when it comes to movement or camera controls.
Apply this to this new steering control. If something were to "bug out" the controller, you're going to be flying off the road.
Some things shouldn't be changed.

I drove a Q50 and it has better steering response and still have tactile feedback. The system has fail safes.
Oh, for an EMP ;)
actually there's nothing wrong with traditional steering...
tan hock jun that is why sometimes people hit walls and trees sometimes .
Good for bad drivers.
This technology is misapplied. Nissan should have sold DAS on the higher more luxury oriented cars. Cars where isolation & smoothness takes precedence over driving feel.
The Q50 is a SPORTS SEDAN. See the problem?
"Sports sedan" is a marketing technic to atract rich baby boomers on a mid-life crisis, there isn't anything sporting on the car.
MrTheMiguelox Exactly. So stick with driving dynamics, not marketing. Seems like Nissan/Infiniti is drunk off their own kool-aid.
yea i agree, and i also think this whole idea is a bad idea. You should only apply something like this if the environment can also be controlled. Else shit will end badly and Nissan will pay the price.
Вот у меня есть идея о новой конструкции рулевого управления и лучше и надежнее этой электрической. А здесь аккумуляторы сдохнут, бензин кончится и все пиздец, даже буксировать проблема будет.
Goodbye steering wheel
Why make things simple if you can complicate things further. Besides, having steering feel allows you to be a better driver. It's dumb to remove that connection. Computers can't replace a good driver.
nooooooo, this is the end ofmotoring
It's called drive-by-wire and Honda did it first!
Hooray! More electronic shit to fuck up and no one knows how to fix or can afford to fix! Also parts only available through over priced dealerships!

bad news for anyone who enjoys driving
Not for me thanks.
lifeless
Unnerving.
