A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he’s always wanted: a chance to finally fit in.
Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is a new American musical about life and the way we live it.

I realised that this song has a really happy beat and was really confused but then I realised the lyrics were about how people don’t understand and don’t take the time to look at peoples faces and what’s going on in their minds. And the fact that the song is a sad song disguised as a happy song and matches the message is so clever and cool. The thought that goes into this omg
Totally agree!
Wow I didn’t realize that till you pointed it out. that’s actually really clever. 😮😮😮😮
You should have known it was depressing - this is DEH
Spegnag Maglorious accurate!
Haha yeah I didn't realize how sad it was until I payed closer attention
This adds a whole new layer to the “nothing like your smile line” in if I could tell her
How did I not realise that.
"Sort of subtle, and perfect, and 'real'."
@@LuneWatcher oh my god
What do you mean?
@@20eyewh In if I could tell her, Evan is talking about how "Connor" (actually him) thought that Zoe's smile is beautiful and real. Well, if this song was in the musical, Zoe had basically said to the audience that she's faking it. Sorry it's a bit confusing XD
Dear Mallory,
Thank you so much for showing us this side of Zoe.

"A total trainwreck"?? "Get her off this ride"?? I know where those lines are in the musical!! Man, if they kept this reference, that would have been killer!
I WAS THINKING THE SAME AND THOUGHT NOBODY ELSE NOTICED
@@ryanfaure3120 I'm glad I'm not the only one!!
Yes! But I guess they kind of used it when Evan compares his situation to a train going off the tracks🤔
Katie Ferguson in good for you, evan refers to his life as a ‘train going off the tracks’ and the climax of the song is him begging to be let off of that train
Katie Ferguson this show really likes to draw connections/parallel between characters through wording and references... one of my favorite things about the musical
Here are the lyrics :)
[ZOE]
When it’s just you and some song
That you don’t know how to play
Fake your way through, strum along
Be cool and you’re okay
So your fingers get tangled in a pile
Your rhythm is a mess
But nobody sees 'cause you smile
And the world will never guess
Can’t let them know
'Cause no one understands
Your face can show
What you’re hiding in your hands
Daughter and son, man and wife
Fill the photos on these walls
Look at the fun, perfect life
Of plastic dress up dolls
Happy house on a quaint suburban street
The sun hangs in the sky
Everything framed, nice and neat
In a lovely little lie
Can’t let them know
'Cause no one understands
Your face can show
What you’re hiding in your hands
La da da da, la la da, la da da da da da da
La da da da, la da da
Look at her
A total trainwreck
Let her off this ride
Lift her out from all the pain
She tells herself she needs to hide
When it’s just you and that song
It’s impossible to play
Fake your way through, strum along
And everything’s okay
Can’t let them know
'Cause no one understands
Your face can show, oh
No one understands
Your face can show
What you’re hiding in your hands
La da da da, la da da
Thank you!!
Gabriel Starobinas I think it’s “lift her out” not “left her out from all the pain” .... but also thank youuuuuu 😂
Thank you!!!
Thank yooouuu!😋💚
Thanks :))
The line that said "the sun hangs in the sky" . . . the first few times I listened to it, I heard it as "son" which initially confused me, because I thought of Conner, but looking back it kind of works as subtext . . .
OMG NO
Me too, every time
*throws herself out of the window because these theories are too much*
YOU BETTER STOP
WHY
See, here's the thing. I think this song could work when Connor is still alive. Think of it: Zoe confronts Connor at home about that poor kid in the hallway that he pushed for seemingly no reason. Connor doesn't tell her about the note but he argues with her. They yell and fight, it's loud and kind of overwhelming. Cynthia steps in and scolds Zoe and Zoe storms off to her room and we see her frustration and just how done she is with having to shut up and hide her opinions and the way she feels to keep her family out of chaos. We understand her better in Requiem and we see her guilt and sadness over Connor later in the musical.
Just give me more Zoe Murphy, okay.
Headcanon accepted
This is so perfect because the reason Connor pushed Evan is because Evan was kinda smiling and Connor thought he was making fun at him just like Jared. But Evan actually just didn't know what to do or how to react so there was more behind his "smile" than Connor could think. Maybe Zoe saw behind Evan's smile. Even though the song is about her faking her emotions, pretending to be fine, it could also be about this
If anyone was wondering, the chords are C, G, Am, F
I just played that for most of the song, and it fits pretty well!
I have a concert uke so I put a capo on the 1st fret in order to play with the song :)
Unknown User Yay a fellow musician! Even though I play guitar I am determined to give anything related to Zoe Murphy love, so I downloaded a ukulele app and figured it out too. Now I’m replying to everyone asking for the chords.
It could also be because I have nothing to do at 4am in the morning
What's the strum pattern you do?
Emma Brown I normally do down-up-down up; the first bit has the down-up-down strum all at once and you pause/mute the strings before the last up strum (sorry if it’s confusing, I tried to explain it as best I could)
@@remyl2443 Thank you so much
Unknown User thank you!!!
Why is Mallory an _actual_ princess??? I could listen to her sing all day
That moment when you read the words closely and understand what it acually means.
I always thought Zoe was the one who suffered the most out of them all. Love that we’re seeing a bit more development
I don’t think we could compare the suffering. Zoe is being hurt. Connor and Evan have illnesses. It can’t be compared and it shouldn’t.
But yes I’m glad we seen more development.
@@threedicksonabench3141 Still, I'm happy that Zoe and Evan found each other and gave one another what they each needed most.
I can understand cutting a song for time but this song not only adds another layer to Zoe but it makes all the songs she has with Evan
(If I Could Tell Her, You Will Be Found, Only Us) so much deeper.
Not only was she probably verbally abuse by her drug addict brother, she also finally found a guy she could rely on who ‘knew’ her brother and then it turns out that was all a lie
have you ever heard a voice so perfect you just started crying-
cerunagi lol her live performance is so much better tbh!! This is heavily auto tuned!! Luv her tho!!

@@justalizardd preach fam
It always felt like DEH needed something just to make the plot make a little more sense to me, and I think this is it. I don’t think we get to see into Zoe’s mind enough to properly empathise with and understand her. I think this song does that.
Also Mallory you’re such a sweetheart, and I’m so proud of you for getting this far.
Alright, so I do believe Requiem is better, as it shows more detail into Zoe and Connor's relationship, along with the Murphy parents' point of view, but I feel like this song gives Zoe more character. It gives her the "I'm smiling but in pain" trait, which makes her more characterized.
Just my opinion, feel free to share yours ^-^
Music Princess It also suggests a notable parallel with Evan, hiding themselves "out of the sun".
Honestly I agree! This song is solely centered on Zoe, delving more into her character, and I'm really grateful for it.
Andrea Cassidy oof
I favor Requiem solely because it establishes the dynamic between her and Connor as very adversarial, and Evan manipulating her through making her feel better is what drives their relationship throughout the play.
If you cut it, I don’t know where else you establish that. This song is cute but it’s about a vague struggle, whereas Requiem is explicit in saying that she doesn’t *want* to miss Connor.
Music Princess I think Peter requiem for the play because I think it works better for where Zoe is at that point. She basically says she not going to fake love her life anymore, or lie to herself. That makes more interesting dynamics between her and Evan for the rest of the play. I think this would perfectly establish her character before Conner commits suicide, but not after.
The text praising Mallory is so me
I have often found Zoe a relatable character in Dear Evan Hansen and this song does show how I feel about my own familial situation
Same
Ditto.
Sometimes you just have to smile and never let them know
Why don’t you like her?
Personally I just liked how she was kind of a realistic, somewhat mature character I could relate to. She, and like, all the other characters had a refreshing amount of nuance and her relationship with Connor wasn’t her entire character. Although I thought she was a little wooden in the finished project I think looking at her from an outward perspective turns her into a pretty solid character
Looks like I’m gonna start playing ukulele again now because of this specifically
I found the chords on a cover someone did!! The progression is- C,G,Am,F and then it switches after “So your fingers get tangled...” to C,E7,Am,F. Hope that helped!!

@@amberfink3606
C, G, A, F for most of the verse and the chorus.
The lines "So your fingers get tangled in a pile..." and "Happy house on a quaint suburban street..." are C, E (some say 7, some say minor, whatever you think sounds best honestly. I play minor.) A, F.
Bridge is Dm (Or F), G, A, F.
Strumming pattern is the hardest thing to get tbh, but the chords are super easy and fun!
I'm really glad these videos have the annotations from the creative team, it really gives us context to these songs and reading how they felt and thought about how everything came along and what did/didn't make it into the show
I love how 90% of the annotations are them fangirling over how amazing Mallory's voice is
As a teenager, I can sadly relate to "hiding in my hands"
I honestly really jealous of Mallory since we’re at the same age but she’s really really talented
I resonate with this song so much. That it is exactly how I feel about my place in my family. Pretend it's okay and avoid the conflict. Don't bother others with your issues, it will only make it worse.
I've always had trouble putting this feeling into words and this song actually really helps me. Thank you.
Also, It is so perfect in sense that it sounds so sweet on the outside but it's "hiding" a message that is real and sad
I just discovered this song even though I’ve been a fan of DEH for years. The “la da das” are my favorite part because my take on it (that might not be what they had in mind) is that Zoe is trying to use filler to help the song because she can’t think of the words. When you put this into context of how she feels in life, it’s really meaningful.
Dear Evan Hiding-in-your-Handsen
Okay I figured out the chords for guitar at least if anybody wants to know them
With a capo on the 6th fret the chord progression for the chorus and verses are G D Em Cadd9 without the pinky on the high e string
Going into the bridge during the “la da das” it’s G D Cadd9 D then for the actually bridge it’s Em D G Cadd9 without the pinky. Then for the “needs to hide” part its connects with the bridges Cadd9 then D G and it resumes the normal chord progression on the G
Edit: for the Em, you can leave your middle finger on the 2nd string (b string) 3rd fret so it turns into a G6/E I think, and in my opinion it sounds better (and you also don’t have to pick up your middle finger at all during the chord progression!)
Because I love this song soooo much I downloaded a ukulele app and with the capo on the 1st fret it’s C G Am F or with out a capo it’s C# G# A#m F#
Going into the bridge it’s C G F G then for the actual bridge it’s Am G C F and for the “needs to hide” it’s Am G C
Shaunia Marek thank you so much! Do you have a strumming pattern?
Zali Phillips well if you want something close to the recording it would be Down Up (Down Up) Down with the strums in the parenthesis being palm muted, but I like throwing in some percussive slaps and changing the pattern even at some parts at times, depends how I’m feeling
This is why you should be in the DEH gang

"Be cool and you're okay" Ouuuccchhh my heeaarrrttttttt. If you threw in a sniffle at the very end of that I would be sobbing instead of crying quietly so my parents don't hear.
When my friend first showed me this song, it's happy melody completely confused me and since I was in a very positive mood that day I misinterpreted the song completely and I told them, "this song is so sweet! I love it, it had such a positive message about smiling through the troubles in life and showing people you can be strong despite those hardships!" And my friend was so confused... They told me what this song actually means and then it was my turn to be so confused but when I listened to it again a few more times I realised my mistake and I was so embarrassed and I felt so bad for how terribly I misinterpreted the song. I still feel really embarrassed about it when I think about it. I still really love the song though

This sounds so happy but it’s so sad ahhhh
Okay so many things about this song are just so flabbergasting to me.
One, these directors/writers are so supportive of Mallory and I honestly love that, how they’re saying how proud they are and calling her a total rockstar.
Two, I absolutely adore how this song is so metaphorical, like, it talks about how she plasters on a fake smile and acts happy when really she isn’t and doesn’t wanna be there, all in a happy tune covering a sad truth. I feel like this (happy beat covering up the sad lyrics) is a metaphor in which you must discover to truly _know_ the song.
And Three, I think they should lengthen the show just to put all these cut songs in. Like “Little Bit Of Light” And “Going Viral” we’re both amazing! “Obvious” (even though I’m a heavy TreeBros shipper) and “Part Of Me” were BORN for the stage (I don’t think they play Part Of Me in the show in NYC) and “in the bedroom down the hall” would get everyone feeling the emotion this show was meant to put in people within a matter of four minutes.
gAH I love this show too much-
This and the "Obvious" song are the best ❤❤❤ Luv it ❤❤❤

Can I say a big sister to other siblings that this song means a lot to me. I always been told to be the example to not do anything to stupid. I don’t tell anyone my struggles because I’m scared that if I tell anyone I’m bothering them. But this song speaks to me that I’m not the only one living or telling a lie about my family. So thank you for this song.
I think I've just found my new favorite song. Y'all already KNOW I'm gonna be obsessed with this song
Mallory sounds sooo good in this, and the music’s beautiful, but it kinda sounds like royalty free background music
XD
Abahaha that’s what I thought
tbh if I was Zoe I'd probably use royalty-free music too. But yeah... the background music does sound like a song someone would put into a video so they wouldn't get copyrighted.
The tune of this is so cute and mallory’s voice fits really well. I really love the character development on Zoe with this song :)) we get to see her “world” more
Guess who’s gonna start singing this in their uke :,))
Honestly, I’m gonna pick up trying to learn ukulele just to learn this song and sing with it. I don’t care that I can’t sing for shiz, I’m gonna sing this.
Oh my goodness,
Finally a song I can completely relate to-
(I mean I relate to almost every dear Evan Hansen song but-)
I'm listening to this at one in the morning, I'm up late due to stress and worry and then I find this.
I have to admit it brought tears to my eyes.
I'm so happy to feel like I'm not alone, and this song is one of the few that really shows that.
Oh and Mallory's voice is gorgeous and brings a emotion to this happy sounding tune that shows it's still about someone struggling.
Thank you to the Wonderful crew of Dear Evan Hansen for making me feel so happy :)

My favorite song cut from the play so far.
the commentary just makes it funny i cant focus on the emotions of the song HAHAHAHA
I'm sensing a trend of these cut sings being very beautiful, and lovely for a recorded track, but they don't have enough detail and characterization to really fit into a Broadway show. They're perfect as they are, just a recording
mallory is such an icon and this is so beautiful
This is so real. It adds such an amazing layer to Zoe!
this song is so important to me. i have lost my older brother, and hearing this song reminds me of exactly how i felt when he left. i needed to be strong (even though i was nine at the time) because my mom was so broken and my dad had to keep our lives together. i had to hide all of my grief and stay strong. this song is so beautiful and important to me. even though this song did not end up in the show, i am thankful there is a recording of it. thank you.
WHAT?!?!?! *mind blown*
I heard this song in an animatic and fell in love with it but I had absolutely no idea that it a cut from Dear Evan Hansen !!! Goodness, the song sounds completely different from the rest of the soundtrack, so I understand why they cut it, but it's still a very lovely song.
I love this song. It hits close to home, growing up with my brother suffering through psychosis and me having troubles with depression and anxiety but feeling like I had to hide it from my parents because they already had their hands full with my brother.
Aw, Im sorry.
I suddenly have related to Zoe Murphy’s character on a whole new level. Wow thanks deh
This song wouldn’t have matched the mood of DEH so it’s glaringly obvious to me why it didn’t make it, but it’s so cute! I’m glad they released it, it’s such a sweet and nice song. 🥰

I kind of like how this song was deleted. Like its so SO amazing, obviously. But, the way i found it, is i was just browsing and i stumbled upon it. It's like i really am overhearing her thoughts, thoughts that not everyone knows. idk it makes me feel honored :)

Wish I knew someone half as comforting as this song
This one is great. I think the best part about it is the vocals and instrumentals playing off of each other. I wish they could of kept this song and Reqiuem. Maybe have this song in more early of the start. Like Wavin Through a window but for Zoe. I wish this one stayed because this is the only Zoe solo.
It hurts how much I relate to this song.
“Mallory sounds gorgeous here” Yeah I know man I have ears
I love the desperation in the lyrics of the bridge. Gives such a contrast to the rest of the song and the true loneliness she feels in her family and her world- a feeing she too shares with both Connor and Evan.
Also, the “la-da-da’s” also give off the vibe that she’s trying to comfort herself from her own loneliness. Such incredible writing from Pasek & Paul!
i wish so badly this was in the show
I need a version of DEH with all the outtakes included.
I thought this was gonna be about Evan's sweaty hands anxiety, lol
I find that this song completely fits me
Okay just imagine! **IMAGINATION TIME™**
If Connor cleaned up his act and started to patch things up with Zoe and she sang this to him. Then they painted eachothers nails.
Okay I'll leave now.

at first i thought the song was a bit cliche and happy sounding, but i gave it a chance and i realized how clever it was. they took a sad song and disguised it as a happy little tune. also i am in love with the melodies and the ukulele and mallory’s voice!! it’s all wonderful!!
The meaning is so simple to understand.
It's like Natsuki's poems. (Yes, I just compared this to Doki Doki).
Kind of reminds me of Bullet by Hollywood Undead, with the happy tone but dark lyrics.
It's sad, really. But I love it!
