I'm not sure if you know just how much you help people learn the art of quilting! I have learned more from you than all my other classes put together. In fact, I no longer take classes. But I just can't really put into words how much your contagious laughter and your more than obvious joy means to someone like me! Your tutorials just brighten my day and warms my heart! Thank you so very much.

Don't forget to pin the bottom edge of the sleeve in place (or fold ends toward the center of quilt) before you put the binding on. Mine has gotten in the way as I sewed the binding on. Then I must "unsew" the binding to fix the mess! LOVE your tutorials Jenny!!!

I make banners & find that it helps to put a sleeve on the bottom as well. I can slide a dowel through & it helps the fabric hang down straight & keeps the sides from curling in. It's like curtain weights but much easier to remove for storage & cleaning & it distributes any strain evenly across the fabric. Jenny - thanks for the close-ups on the knot & the binding stitch. Those little details really help.

Great video! One suggestion I have is to baste the sleeve to the back of the quilt before stitching the binding to the quilt. That way it's already in place and you won't have to worry about catching all layers while you're attaching the binding.

I was given a memory quilt from my quilting group when I moved back to my home state. It is completely finished so I will be hand sewing the pocket right under the existing binding and then hand sewing the bottom of the pocket to the backing. I will also do the exact same thing on the bottom of the quilt so I can insert a wooden dowel in the bottom to keep the quilt hanging straight down. This will be displayed in a bedroom. When it gets dusty, I will be able to take it down and launder it.

I love your method. That being said, our quilt show (Trinity Valley Quilter's Guild) has a limit on how high the quilt sleeve may be. The quilt I want to show in September is longer than the 84" from the floor, so I must put a sleeve lower on the back in order for it to not drag on the floor and get dirty or stepped on. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

Thank you for this tutorial on hangings sleeves and the bonus tutorial on the binding stitch and knots. Now I see why a judge thought my binding stitches were too long. I am now making my stitches much closer to the size you suggest.
I can see using those new clips to hold the layers when sewing on the sleeve. I hate pins. :)

I use a two inch piece to make my sleeve and fold it in half and sew both sides in with the binding. There is just enough room to slide the dowel thru and put the one cap back on the dowel when I am finished. Very similar to what you do but I don't have to tack to the quilt.

When sewing the sleeve at the very top of the quilt, doesn't the sleeve itself show above the quilt once a rod is inserted and hung? Usually it's recommended to sew the sleeve beginning 1" below the binding so it doesn't show when the quilt is hung.

    • @paulinehunt4069

1" below binding and small tuck in sleeve for rod to slide in freely.

Thomasean You can use the kinds of rods and hardware that you would use to hang curtains and drapes. There are loads of different looks to have. I tend to use round wooden rods and dowels. Google these various. Terms and you'll find lots of options.

This is such a wonderful tutorial (as always), but can you add a hanging sleeve to a quilt with a scalloped edge, like that one behind you? Or is there another way that's best to hang those? Or is it just best to drape them like you have that one? Sorry if this is an obvious one, I'm very new to quilting.
