Man, imagine being that bass sitting alone next to oher shiny ones in the shop and one day magic happends and you wake up playing all those great Rancid basslines. How lucky that bass is, one in a million! 🎸 Thank you mr. Freeman for your videos! ❤
I am so glad that I have found this channel. I pretty much taught myself to play bass trying to figure out all of the Operation Ivy bass parts when i was a teenager in the Atlanta suburbs in the 1990s. Getting a jazz bass when i was 17 was one of the most important musical moments in my life, and i got it because i wanted to be able to shred like Matt Freeman.
I love instruments with histories, even if current owners don't know it. Buying second-hand is always more interesting than stock from the store. It does tickle me funny thinking the original owner of that bass recognizes it in the hands of a legend. Great stuff Matt, as always.
I went into *the shop in Edmonton Alberta at the age of 18 with 3 bass guitars on my mind: Stingray, P-bass, and J-bass. Played them all but you cannot beat the tone of the Jazz. Absolutely phenomenal. I hope to age my J-bass as exquisitely as yours is aged, already started on that belt buckle rash
Love those vintage look and natural relic, had chance played some 70s jazz from one of the collector here in malaysia, speechless..i owned a ton of modern bass but always prefer the vintage one..of course i love rancid and punk rock too..
As a younger man when I owned a bass I got a midnight blue Fender Jazz purely because I was playing your stuff. I was surprised recently in an interview at how you started/always had a precision and how much more than I realised you used fingers as well as a plectrum (pick to you). I was young and naive. However I loved that Jazz
Would’ve loved to see a more close up view of the binding on the side. I haven’t seen one in person, but those era Jazz basses with the pearl block inlays looks so beautiful.
Hi Matt, I don't listen to Rancid a lot, but as bass-player I like to come back to your play-along songs, which are great for me to see what I need to learn. Would be great to see you playing this j-bass though, maybe on next vid?
Coming to see you in Toronto this summer, can’t wait. Would love to hear All American Neighbourhood or Beauty of the Pool Hall on this channel. Troublemaker doesn’t get enough love ❤
I have a very similar sunburst jazz and its fast becoming my go-to gigging bass. Sounds amazing. Be a while before its as worn in as yours though. Thanks for these videos - they're a treat each week!
Would be great to have a video on how you approach writing bass for a song, and if this has changed over time. Like maybe Tim sends you a rough demo on acoustic, then you go from there? Do you apply much theory, or you just build around root notes and what you think might work for the song?
Love these videos Matt. Jay B from BR has been posting about his bass amps through the years and advice to get the best full sound. Maybe some videos about your amps?
This is so interesting, I love these behind the gear videos! I'd be super interested in knowing how your basses are setup to allow to pretty intense picking without much (or any) buzz.
Mr. Freeman (a long shot, perhaps, but) did you ever gig w/ Rancid on an MIJ Geddy Lee signature jazz bass? Like back near 2000? My personal all-time fave Fender production jazz bass, and wondered your thoughts on it (if memory serves one was also listed in your arsenal on the official Fender website back in them days. Thanks for making your extraordinarily good music more accessible with these vids. Punk rock moves for certain.
Really nice one, i love this « used » aspect. As you said, this one must had played a lot of gigs. For sure a cool history, but we can’t always know the history of old guitar bass, or camera in my case. Just bought a not pretty medium format for 1935/1938, and love his bad aspect, it mist have a cool history, as your guitar bass must have. Hope to see you on stage again soon. (Was there in Hellfest / Clisson the last time)
Once again many thanks for the video Matt ! 👍. I’d like to know more nerds info like the brand / gauge strings and how the bass sounds on its own and what vol/vol configuration your prefer. ✌️
Thanks for posting these videos, like everyone else on here I love watching you play but it’s interesting when you show your Basses off. I like the one you gave Ross by the way
Is that the jazz bass used on some of the recordings for life won’t wait? I would love to hear some of these videos talk about the insights of recording some of these tracks in the studio, especially life won’t wait because if I remember correctly. I read an article at the time back in 1998 where Rancid traveled to multiple different cities and countries to record.
Matt - since Dominoes just turned 15, could we maybe get a play through of a song off that record soon? After the Wolves/LWW/2K trifecta, it's my favorite Rancid album! All the different styles on the record, it actually reminds me a lot of LWW.
Hey matt, love watching your videos, mesmerising bass playing!! How would you feel about doing some cover songs from other bass legends? Be interesting to watch you play some like Flea or Cliff Burton for example? Either way can't wait for your next video!!🤘
Love the detail you go into on this Jazz bass and Brian Thrasher does amazing work. BTW, what picks are you using and is there a reason you use those specific picks. I still haven't settled in on a pick yet but I rotate between 60 and 88mm picks.
Also Matt, as a self confessed Rickenbacker nerd, have you ever used one? I'm constantly torn between lemming and Matt Freeman-ing. My two biggest inspirations
There's a live video of them in Japan where he has one with his name engraved in the fretboard, it looks like a Rickenbacker but I have poor eyesight so I can't make out the name on the head
So I love Rics. I have had a couple but the tone just doesn’t go well sonically with Tim’s and Lar’s tone. They seem to get lost in there frequency’s. The one I played in Japan that time was not an actual Ric. It was a custom bass that had the same body shape( because Rics look awesome) and a Bartolini pickup. It also had my name in the neck. Play whatever makes you happy. Thanks for watching.
@@MattFreemansBassBunker rics are unobtainium in Australia! So I was lucky enough to find a cheaper one so i have to make it work. Thanks heaps for replying Matt!
Good lookin jazz bass with a ton of history, I think you mentioned it was used on most of Out come the wolves if I remember correctly? Killer tone. For the next vid could you go over Bloodclot? Thanks Matt, keep on rockin!
Nice Bass! I love the Jazz - one question to all you players: Volume on the Pickups always both full up, right? As soon as one pickup isn't fully open, it loses that throaty quality and gets wobbly. At least mine does. Is that the general consensus with you bassy folks? Awesome channel, thx Matt!
Hey Matt, small correction, this is rosewood and not ebony! Small info: It has the block inlays, but being from 69 it has the "60s" tone. In 1971 the bridge pickup was moved 1/4 of an inch closer to the bridge, and the tone of the Jazz Bass changed quite a bit. Until 1983. Great sounding bass!
Thank you great man Matt ! It's a very warm sound🎶Are the pickups original? The way the wood is worn down gives it a very aged look that is really cool ! It's twice as cool when you have it✨✨
Killer bass. I also prefer player basses. Instruments that's been used have a nicer feel. Also, if you make a ding, it doesn't feel as bad is if it was a bass in pristine condition.
10years ago i bought the Tim Armstrong signature gretsch and was going to your signature fender jazz bass but i tore ligaments in both elbows which meant i temporarily lost the ability to play as well as income. so between interest fading due to lack of playomg plus my savings going to cover lost income I never did. I may buy your next signature model and just wall hang it. Beside Tim's guitar.
So if I did i would eventually need Lars. His $1700usd (not sure date) and Matt's about $650usd, but that was the 2015 price. I only find used with current dates. Is it still available new?
What basses do you usually take to a rancid show? Do you switch basses depending on the songs, or do you play de whole show with just one bass? Thanks!
Man, imagine being that bass sitting alone next to oher shiny ones in the shop and one day magic happends and you wake up playing all those great Rancid basslines. How lucky that bass is, one in a million! 🎸 Thank you mr. Freeman for your videos! ❤
Matt thank you so much for being our big brother all these years. ✊✊ It's been an honor.
I could watch videos of musicians talking about their instruments like this all day.
I could hear Matt talking about anything everyday
Very cool! Please keep showing us more of your gear!
Awesome, brother! I have a '68 that's almost a twin of your '69. Had it since around 2006...
This Jazz Bass is so gorgeous!
I love instruments with histories, even if current owners don't know it. Buying second-hand is always more interesting than stock from the store.
It does tickle me funny thinking the original owner of that bass recognizes it in the hands of a legend. Great stuff Matt, as always.
Would love you to tell us the exact basses you used for each Rancid album. Thanks! You are my fav bass player!
It would be awesome to see a video of how you get your tone in the studio, and how or if, you have changed it over the years!
That's how a Jazz bass oughta sound, Matt. She's beautiful.
i remember Jeremy had one just like that. instantly got brought back by seeing it 🖤
I went into *the shop in Edmonton Alberta at the age of 18 with 3 bass guitars on my mind: Stingray, P-bass, and J-bass. Played them all but you cannot beat the tone of the Jazz. Absolutely phenomenal. I hope to age my J-bass as exquisitely as yours is aged, already started on that belt buckle rash
Matt Freeman's Bass Bunker the coolest place to hang out

Perfect finish, beautiful instrument
Thanks for another bass spotlight video. They're a blast!

Love to see the collection!
What a beauty. Such an amazing bass
Would’ve loved to see a more close up view of the binding on the side.

Love the look of blocks and binding on a bass and a well loved example like that looks so much cooler than a case queen.
Coming to see you in Toronto this summer, can’t wait. Would love to hear All American Neighbourhood or Beauty of the Pool Hall on this channel. Troublemaker doesn’t get enough love ❤
I’m so glad these videos exist, I adore your playing dude!
Love these kinds of videos. The how-to vids as well!
I'd love to see what's on the other end of the patch cable, your settings, etc.
Ok. At some point I will do an “ inside the Bass Bunker@ video and show everyone how I do it. Thanks for wartching
I have a very similar sunburst jazz and its fast becoming my go-to gigging bass. Sounds amazing. Be a while before its as worn in as yours though. Thanks for these videos - they're a treat each week!
Very awesome J Bass!!!! Really bright, but punchy too! Definitely would love to see more lesson videos! Thanks as always Matt!
Beautiful. Love a heavily played Sunburst finish. Thanks Matt!
Wow! That bass looks amazing and with the jazz bass pickups I bet you can get some warm round tones thanks for sharing bro!
I play one of these because of YOU! It sounds amazing.
Me too 😊
What's that awesome looking doubleneck!!!
Thank you for sharing these awesome stories.

Hey Matt you should tell us some story's from time on the roads. Shashing up hotel room kind of stuff
I didn’t realize the 69s had the bridge pickup in the 70s position. Awesome Geddy tone!!
I’m not sure it does. I was always told the 70s had the Bridge pickup a little farther back . I’m going to have to get one and measure.
Beautiful bass!!
That thing is sick!

Thanks Matt!! Always nice to see the tools of the trade and hear the stories about them. As always good stuff.
Awesome instrument ❤❤❤❤
Sweet!
Wow so cool! I never knew Fender basses had ebony fingerboards.
I'd love to see you play some guitar. I bet you have some shredding chops
Once again many thanks for the video Matt ! 👍. I’d like to know more nerds info like the brand / gauge strings and how the bass sounds on its own and what vol/vol configuration your prefer. ✌️

Been waiting for this. Thanks for making this 🙌
thank you its awesome ! as a big life wont wait fan i realy appreciate this 🙌

Love Jazz Basses!
Really cool you showing and explaining your rig.

Beautiful bas!!!
Love it, thank you
It's so bright, I would have sworn Life Won't Wait was played on a 70's Jazz Bass !
Was the 95 album also done on that bass ?
Hey matt, love watching your videos, mesmerising bass playing!! How would you feel about doing some cover songs from other bass legends? Be interesting to watch you play some like Flea or Cliff Burton for example? Either way can't wait for your next video!!🤘
Great video, I'd some to see more operation ivy bass play-alongs
you know if its been played its a good one
Awesome video, thanks!
What bass did you record the 1993 and 1994 Rancid albums with? 🙂
Love the detail you go into on this Jazz bass and Brian Thrasher does amazing work. BTW, what picks are you using and is there a reason you use those specific picks. I still haven't settled in on a pick yet but I rotate between 60 and 88mm picks.
Gold. Thank you for your videos.

Would love a play through Arrested in Shanghai and/or some of your favorite X tunes.
It's a beautiful thing Matt. Did you use it on any albums or is it purely for live performance?
Good lookin jazz bass with a ton of history, I think you mentioned it was used on most of Out come the wolves if I remember correctly? Killer tone. For the next vid could you go over Bloodclot? Thanks Matt, keep on rockin!
Hi Matt, do you use any pedals? If you do, can you show it? Thank you!
The jazz bass sounds nice…Matt who are your influences?
Nice Bass! I love the Jazz - one question to all you players: Volume on the Pickups always both full up, right? As soon as one pickup isn't fully open, it loses that throaty quality and gets wobbly. At least mine does. Is that the general consensus with you bassy folks? Awesome channel, thx Matt!
They all do that. You can get a really cool Jaco tone if you put just the bridge pickup on and turn the tone down all the way. Thanks for watching
Also your G string bridge saddle looks fine to me. It's supposed to be this way
Please do your Squier next!
Yes. Your right. I miss spoke. Also, my 78 Jazz sound way different. Thanks for watching
Loved this. Did you use this bass on a lot of songs on Life Won't Wait?
Upload a video playing your favorite James Jamerson riffs.
Thank you great man Matt !
It's a very warm sound🎶Are the pickups original?
The way the wood is worn down gives it a very aged look that is really cool !
It's twice as cool when you have it✨✨
Nice bass 👌
Killer bass. I also prefer player basses. Instruments that's been used have a nicer feel. Also, if you make a ding, it doesn't feel as bad is if it was a bass in pristine condition.
That's really cool Matt, thansk for the video! How often do you change the strings and what kind of strings do you use?
Radness. Can you do one on the upright? Always appreciated Matt. #LetsGoOakland 💚💛
I’m working on that. I’m way out of practice. Thanks for watching
Thanks for sharing! Is this the same Jazz Bass from the Ruby SoHo video?
No. That’s another Jazz. A 1994. I will do a video on that one soon. Thanks for watching

What basses do you usually take to a rancid show? Do you switch basses depending on the songs, or do you play de whole show with just one bass? Thanks!
2:35 - that's a rosewood fretboard, not ebony. It's dark because it's old. 🙂
That is one sweet bass. That the one you used on the Charger albums ?
No. I played an American Professional 2 on the Charger record. Thanks for watching
It was once owned by a now very proud person, for sure.
Hey Matt what did you record with your jazzy?
素晴らしい😂🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏✨✨✨
🔊
Bass rig for your OP Ivy days
Maxwell Murder tone?
Side question. Sorry to be annoying haha. Is this the Jazz used on And out come the wolves?
Cool Jazz bass! Rosewood, not ebony fingerboard however....
Yeah your right. I miss spoke.
do you use light gauge strings for the vintage bass?
No just regular. 105 85 65 45
No. Just regular Mediums. 105 85 65 45. Thanks for watching
- You need a mic for your voice and one for the bass so your voice doesn’t cut out whenever you play.
Rosewood fingerboard
Black Derby Jacket and you sing it at the same time.
