Fantastic review! Got the 2021 reissue on preorder. Can't wait!
Is the reissue any different?
@@TrueSankofa7 from all indicators I've seen and read say it's the same product unchanged
Also one minor correction, that everybody seems to get wrong. Popy was NOT a legacy company that Bandai inherited. Popy always was a Bandai creation and subsidiary of sorts. It was a side company and branding created by the Bandai principles, largely to create Die Cast toys. It wasn't closed or bought out. Bandai simply reabsorbed it and its branding back into the main Bandai brand. If you have ever encountered robot toys by a company called Megahouse, that is similarly a semi independent Bandai subsidiary.
Popy differs from a company such as Takatoku, makers of the original Macross Valkyrie (Transformers Jetfire) who went bankrupt and were bought out and absorbed by Bandai.
thinking about getting it even more
Love the channel! Michael, what did you think of the Icarus Voltron?
I had picked up a Panosh set with boxes and figures and all items/instructions. Hurricane Irene hit us in NJ and away it went :(***
ouch...on Amazon that set is 299.99. That is how much I spent on The Nintendo Switch. How much was the original Voltron Match Box complete back in the 80's?
+Midnight In The Cathedral $80-100
The Netflix Voltron is great. The lion roster has changed. Kieth now flies the Red. Lance flies the blue. Pidge and Hunk are still Green and Yellow. The new pilot of the Black lion is the Sven character, Shiro who is the leader. The princess flies the castle with Koran's help.
There is no way to make this even better, we all can agree that the only way to make it even better is to make the real thing.
thanks for the mention! great video, keep up the great work
I got 2 of the lions the legs 1st and I remember the black lion was $50 I never thought I'd get it but I ended up getting the whole set for really cheap at a flea market I was in heaven it had all the weapons and the green and reds heads flew off the blue had a missile in it's forehead and the yellow had missile ears
If you want cartoon accuracy The 30th Anniversary Jumbo Voltron is worth checking out. It's $139 on bbts (that's the cheapest I think). it is bigger than the matty collector one but only has articulated arms, flying fists, and doesn't transform.
Will you be talking about the new Blitzway Carbotix 5Pro studio VOLTRON?
you guys are awesome.
Dude, I'll be honest, I never watched Voltron and I don't care about it. However, if you make a video on it, I'm giddy to hit play. Awesome video. Keep up the amazing work.
I had the Godaikin Daltanias.
Hey dude. How would you feel if an uncut dub of GoLion were to be made? Do you think it’s a possibility in the near future, say like an anniversary event or as a way to market the live action movie?
I had the die-cast Voltron came in the whole pack with all 5 lions. Or the way I got it was 3 different packages if my memory is correct, was an arm and leg lion in each set then the black lion was in its own box
Were there any die-cast Voltron lion ever released?I would really like to have that if there ever was one.
I could not pass up on this one and I have mine on pre-order.
great review dude..
Hi M&M
Seen quite a few of your vlogs in the past so just wanted to say thanks for the coverage of golion SOC gx-71.
I think some viewers may have probably pointed this out by now that your review had missed a few articulation additions that would vastly address your sword hold issue.
1. the elbows for both red and green lion can be extended out to increase the elbow bend and its overall arm reach.
2. the black tab in the black lion's shoulder locking tabs requires a bit of force and is it officially locked in until you hear a click. One of mine took a small plastic widget (spoon handle) to help push it in until I heard the very audible click noise. This should resolve your shoulder arm rotation issue that was also mentioned with the black lion's chest section.
3. one last thing the torso can be extended up a bit allowing golion to increase its height and slight bend as well.
I have quite a few golion myself ranging from the original popy to various release of it sense ... I can say without a doubt this is the definitive golion to date (minus the spring launching missles)
Thanks again for your informative vids as always keep up the good work :)
I would like to see a toy made for Gladiator Voltron.
The matchbox “made in Japan” marked Voltron is absolutely a legitimate go-lion.
When you said the lockibg mechanism on the shoulders don't work, is tgat the case with both Voltrons you have? because I have the same issue on mine & was thinking about trying to have to exchanged for that sole reason. unless its a factory QC issue in all of them.
The intro gives us a detailed look into the history of Voltron/GoLion figure-dom, and then we also get a very in-depth review of the Chogokin. Fantastic video!
You guys need to get your hands on the Mad Toys King of Beasts Go Lion, I've only seen reviews but it's pretty awesome!!! that version and this Bandai version seem to be the ultimate go to Voltron toy. Yes I know the Mad Toys is not official.
Michael, I just got my Soul of Chogokin Voltron. Will you be getting the new Blitzway Voltron?
Thank you Voltron has always been one of my favorite toys!!!
Hey Michael, do u know that mazinger z was tranzor z here for a bit? It may be a dumb question if u know but I'm wondering.....
I hear the new voltron for the Netflix show is quite cool.
I dont know if u notice but thebelts wrong color and the blue lion and yellow haves different colors add to it plus they dont have accuate shape on leg wise
I'm getting the new Playamtes Voltron simply because this figure now goes for $700 - 1200. Hope they re-release this.
iv got the machbox
I so want one of these, but man $299 is a high price... but it's only going to go up as these get bought up by re-sellers on 2nd hand markets... :(
Though you are not interested, later in the year Playmates will be releasing a diecast Netflix Voltron in the same scale as the Matchbox version with metallic paint etc.
Question, what is the easiest way to remove both arms from GX-71 Voltron? Every time I pull away from it, I fear of breaking something. Thanks for your help.
I literally do this on camera in this video. Did you not see it?
I believe after so many pulls, it might create a wear somewhere around the rims of the connection. So basically there is no tricks, I see. Cause the new Playmate version has a certain rotation trick to disengaged the arms more efficiency without the fear of might breaking something. Since this is a $300 figure, I'm seeking for a better solution "if there is any". No worries.
awesome
Great Review. After watching this video I went an bought one myself. Always wanted a die cast Voltron.
Hey R.B: HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW 2021 BLTZWAY VOLTRON WITH PIOLETS, AND PANNEL TUCK AWAY FEET AS CARTOON ACCURATE?
Now if they can do Soul of Chogkin versions of Dairugger VX and Lightspeed Albegus, that would be awesome to get the other two Voltrons in the Soul of Chogokin series
I wish Bandai made GX-31 Voltes V this big.
I had the Matchbox as a kid, my favorite gimmick was the rising forehead cannon on Blue Lion, and the opening ear flaps on the Yellow Lion. I'm sort of sad that in every new figure since that gimmick is overlooked, but maybe it's not practical anymore?
Soulcraft and don’t forget about the head launchers on green lion and Red lion
Any chance Bandai will do a Voltron 2?
I still like the Diecast one , that one can take a beating
Great review! Please do a review of the first 1982 Bandai Godaikin Golion US release. A nice one seems to be the most rare now in 2020. It was not mentioned in this review, and I think it’s just as important as the JDM Popy. The Bandai GX-71 is a derivative of the 1982 Bandai Godaikin GB-36 in my opinion.
@@timothyward8695 ruclips.net/video/7IFtc1dYM4g/видео.html The one on the left. There both essentially the same, is just that the Godaikin Golion was the first US import version of the original Japanese Popy. They were both made by Bandai. This channel has never made a video on the Godaikin version which is actually the first US release, not the Matchbox.
Great review! For me, this is the first Voltron I've ever owned. I've crossed paths with all of the ones you mentioned in this video but with all of its features, I just had to have this one! You're absolutely right about the sword posing but the positives outweighed the negatives. The one thing I do like is that it has the silver on the end of the wings; the one thing I don't like is the rounded hinge - it should be on the other side. Overall, one of the best pieces in my collection!
Toys Wonderland has a re-issue for pre-order!
So where is the best place to purchase this Voltron from?
Behold the new blitzway voltron 2021
You're right.....this is the one to get. But @ $1000 currently, I don't know WHO is getting it. Lol
where dose my 1997 edition fall under metal with all asst.
I can count on bandai for any anime figure nowadays.
I only had the black lion as a kid.
Last year I got myself the 8 inch diecast Galactic Defender: and the Classic 84 box set.
So 2020, just watched the video; and I'm happy with my 2 sets. 😊😎
Great video. 👍
Aw so glad you guys finally got him, such an awesome toy personally I prefer the new Megazord but that is from personal bias. At the beginning of the video but if Melinda doesn't say "This is not a toy!" I am going to be disappointed :P
You aren't missing a lot from the Netflix series by the way. It is worth a look but it lacks the grit of the original story. Saying that though it does have some quirky bits that made me smile.
Have you watched season 2 yet? It takes the grit up a notch or two and is very well done.
Zach B about 3 episodes in at the moment, its definitely better than the first series so far though. I'll forgive that because they had to set everything up. Just wish the new toys would hurry up to the UK can't be having nice things like SOC's around the house but me and my son can have a blast introducing him to LD Voltron.
That's the one thing about my 20th anniversary toynami. When I combined it for the first time and both arms grabbed the sword together I started to dance a little lol. But seriously I love the toynami. Even though it had loose joints I found a trick to tighten them all up. Now I can pose him anyway I want!
Will you get threezero Voltron?
Unbelievable review! You've earned a subscriber. Truly very informative. Thank you
In a few videos?!?!?!? TEASE!!!!! :-)
Looking forward to the upcoming stuff from Retroblasting, and great review on this interation of Voltron. I'm thinking I'll need to look into this. Thanks!
Have you ever checked out the mad toys voltron...slightly stylized but still interesting
Still doesn't matter. Doesn't sound like s fair trade to me..... losing the spring loaded missiles for that double blade thingy!..... I'd rather have the missiles!
Love the video. Can't wait to see what more videos will be coming this year!!
the arms extends some more if you pull their bodies
Do you have any interest in powerrangers and kamen rider or is that a little too modern/not cartoony enough for you? I think some figures and "peripherals" would go well here
can you do a super sentai/power rangers and ksmen rider reviews?
Love the video. My son and I watched it and he immediately fell in love with this. I told him that it's probably $300 and sure enough. He got to live my childhood dream of having a real Voltron figure in the guise of Lionbot. A year ago, when he asked for a Voltron figure for Christmas, I was speechless. We were watching the original cartoon series and he became a fan a few years ago.
My only complaint about Voltron is the gigantic disparity between the low quality "toy" sets and the collector sets. Outside of Lionbot, there seems to be nothing in between that's a reasonable compromise between play and a collectible.
I know that you prefer Beast King Golion to Voltron, but you owe it to yourself to check out the Netflix reboot. It's actually quite spectacular and finally is Voltron done correctly. We just finished season two this week and the final episode had me on edge. Can't wait for a third season. Season one is a bit slow but season two is very well done.
Cool
Please do a review on SoC Voltus V & Mazinger Z , and Combattler V.
Almost every review of this thing (and myself when I opened mine) has made the same mistake of not knowing about the expanding arms. Don't worry about it.
first lets clear one thing up, Bandai Japan dosnt make crap, Bandai America is another story. Also check out the new series, it is pretty cool, and the combining robot that goes with is actually a very fun toy. Lastly, as soon as i get my tax return, i'm going for this Voltron
Sometimes Bandai America make awful power ranger toy
Deadpool said it best: Voltron, five little robots coming together to make one big robot!
Michael,
If you like Voltron, do you like Shogun Warriors? They are some of my favorites!
Griffin Langhans - yeah man, I liked the old Shogun Warriors, I think they were even before Voltron?! My little brother, which he is in his 50’s now, but he got one of the shogun warriors ( figure?, toy ?) way back in the 70’s. And he still has that figure, it’s the one that has the rockets on it’s hand or hands? The one he has stands about 16-17 inches tall. Anyway, yes sir, I like the old Shogun Warriors and the old cartoon that started them off!
Great review as all ways. All I've ever had is the old Matchbox 6 inch diecast Voltron from the 80's so I'm really considering getting this one.
Holy crap I just ordered one this morning and sure enough here's the review
Thank you for the video. I bought this SOC Voltron on pre-order as I used to own the original popy back in the 80's. This is a great toy but I wish instead of going the way of making an updated popy the tried something different. It would have been great if they tried to be more anime accurate and figured out a way to have the legs removable and have covers to hide the missing legs. I know this was already expensive and I am happy to own. So for now I will keep waiting for my definitive Voltron toy if that should ever come to fruition :)
Mike, it's been bugging me for a while now, but are you Hellogreedo?
+Jason Vernon nope
What about the king of beasts by madtoys infiniti? It looks amazing!
+Isamu Dyson not official
that's the one I like, yes it's not official but that version and the bandai SOC version are the best our there you can get.
I hope SRC makes a super poseable version of the combined mode, making it a smaller scale for dynamic posing.
How about removable legs on the lions for when you have it in Voltron mode?
I have seen the SoC Mazinger Z in person, and it is *gorgeous*
CycloneMetal Yes it is my friend I'm hoping the reissue that is coming out this/next month is just as awesome! Hopefully in anime deco! :P
Cdog Cdog that would be pretty cool. If I had the spare cash I'd buy the Battle Fever J robot.
CycloneMetal I can't believe the DAY I go buy Gaogaigar he's gone. He got marked down to $219.00, from $300.00 (which I wasn't going to pay), & I had to have weeks off from getting ShMonsterarts Shin 2016, TT Super Ginrai, TT Brainstorm, 3A Starscream, Comicave Studios Optimus Prime, VAH Nami, + this
Chogokin Golion!! Not2mention retail shit like SWblack6", & RID Combiner Force & Combiner Activators, AND Power Surge Optimus Prime and PS Sideswipe!! So I DEF needed a break for big stuff for a month but I got my job back yesterday & they had 20 left a month ago and 9 left friday. They even had some yesterday but I went to order the Gaogaigar today and it's out! :/
Love this Voltron! In the cartoon all the lions were proportioned to one another, can't do that in toy form.. This is the next best thing.
Great review and very well said! This figure is AMAZING! I am so glad and feel fortunate I was able to pick one up. I too have the Matty Collector sub Voltron and the first Toynami Masterpiece Voltron. I am not going to sell those because each has its own charm but again I am glad Bandai came out with this. Now I can't wait for the upcoming SOC GX-72 Megazord and if Bandai ever makes a SOC Mighty Orbots, all of my all time fan favorite combining robots would be finally realized in modern toy form. Thanks again for the video!
You never give the remote control Voltron any love. 😞
$700.00 - $1,200.00 now dam
Just paid $500 for this one brand new on Amazon. Couldn't find it for cheaper. Do you think its worth it?
Timothy Ward Yes I do. He is awesome!
Great analysis and comparison! This is pretty much my definitive iteration of the character, but I agree about the various reasons to own the different versions.
Great review. And a reasonably fair comparison of those available. Just a few comments.
1. Play with the GX-71 some more. You haven't discovered all of its jointing yet. Yes you are supposed to unlock the shoulders to do that cross chest pose. But what you missed is the Red and Green Lions have extension joints in the waists. The elbows compress and uncompressed. Extend them and that 2handed sword pose becomes much easier.
2. While the Toynami is a little easier to pose in the arms. It counters this by being awful in the legs. Bandai has highly articulated legs and feet. Plus the Bandai legs hold a pose. They don't crash together like those '80's "clackers" when you pick the robot up. Nor do the cats fall off the legs when picked up. They have a hard lock. Toynami's die cast cats are really too heavy for the plastic black lion limbs. Bandai's Blue and Yellow Lions also have waist shoulder and neck joints, which both allows the cats to sit and allows for much better Leg posing in robot mode.
I would definitely say that the new Bandai is the best all around, most well rounded interpretation of the robot. The only thing it lacks is the spring fire missiles of the original. (Which they seem to have backed away from lately, not sure why?) Yeah the Popy is still your first love. You can never replace that. And for the Collector that will be important. But for the Adult Collector looking for A Voltron, the SOC is the best starting point.
Oh and Mike... it's Sunday, go take the afternoon and binge watch the new Voltron. You'll thank us. You really will. It perfectly threads the needle between the fun engaging characters of the original Voltron, and the deeper weighty stories of GoLion and shows amazing respect to both. The new robot designs while different are acceptable. You really need to see them in motion to appreciate them. It's not the Game of Thrones brutality of GoLion, but it is on par with the showrunners prior work Avatar the Last Airbender. You guys will love it.
childhood! informative as usual. thank you.
very informative video, I just wish this version was less expensive
Cannot say I agree with the part about the Toynami version. I almost loath mine nowadays trying to pose it. So floppy.
This is solid and so easy to be posed. Perhaps I have a great sample.
Fantastic history of the toys and discussion on all the different figures. really enjoyed this.
Awesome review! What about playmates legendary defender voltron?
+Giorgio Moneta I believe I explained that in the video...
nicely done, like that you mention the full silver upper legs nobody ever talks about that. you've probably already seen it but the voltron ultimate dx is not bad looking.
awesome review bro. I've learn a lot.
So which one is better, this or the 30th anniversary diecast version?
I too have this same question.
NO comparison.. SOC blows 30th ann. out of the park in every way possible.. Plus it is highly pose able and have no weight bearing issues... just so much more aesthetic..making 30th anniversary look like an AIDS patient
SoC..
WickedlNl This one, the GX71 blows the Toynami Masterpiece away in every way possible. The Toynami might be worth getting if you can find one < $100. Especially the 30th anniversary one with the nice base. But even then, get it in addition to the SOC, and use the base for the SOC.
soc for sure, the only thing good about that 30th ann toynami version is the electronic display stand.......
Another great video! Thanks for reviewing this, it really helps in my quest to find the perfect Voltron.
I almost purchased the new playmates Voltron, thanks for reminding me that it's modern garbage and it won't fill my 80's boyhood dream!
I was just watching your voltron part 2 video
Hi Michael. Great review! You could have pulled up the waist though. Once you do that, it does improve the waist swivel, and the profile looks better as well.
Michael, I noticed on the review you didn't extend the elbows out. I think that will help with the two hands holding the sword. Also, the shoulder locks, you need to firmly push in and it locks fine.
great video! This figure looks awesome!
I've been waiting for you to review this before I went out to get one... now I have to get it.
As far as the Playmates Voltron, you have to give it a try. I saw you with some modern, lol It reminds me of a modern day Panosh. Tons of playability.
What a great video essay about one of the most influential series in pop culture and toys. Great editing and precise information. Please, if it is possible, can you considered a comparison between the early action figures and ships for "Battlestar Galactica" and his awesome reboot/sequel masterpiece. Greetings from Santiago de Chile.
I prefer the chogokin as it is the only version that can be put in its striking sword pose. I found that the shoulder un-hinge for the sole purpose of holding the sword double handed.
