I moved up to Scotland from near Liverpool four years ago and I've never looked back. I always say that yes, I was born English. But I choose to be Scottish. I'll be getting the keys to my forever home in Tomintoul tomorrow and I can't wait! I love watching your videos. You're both such lovely folk and your love for Skye (and each other) is blatantly obvious. Oh, and Jack Spaniels is the true star of the channel. Like you didn't already know! 😂
I can relate to this, I felt the same when I visited Scotland, also France. I always feel I resonate more with Scotland and France than England. Definitely where Scotland is concerned. Maybe in past lives we habited there. Hah…..
I moved from my city of Liverpool where I had lived and worked for 65 years to the other side of the world (New Zealand) and can relate to the beautiful Isle of Skye and I am sure my surname has given me that connection. (Laurie). I so look forward to these weekly videos. Good luck with your move.🙃🌴🌿❤
My grandparents used to take that river walk every night! I walked with them at times my son joined us. I cannot express enough how happy you've made me
I’m so glad you explained why people were forced to abandon their homes and leave Scotland. I had my DNA done and I am ~40% Scottish. I often wondered why my ancestors left to come to the US and only knew a little of the history. It’s really interesting. Love your channel! 💜
Wish more American knew this. The lairds who broke the social contract with their poor relatives from the clan and forced them off their ancestor lands built massive mansions off the money they made from the wool boom grown on the land now cleared of people. With the decline in income coming into the large Scottish estates from the 1930s onwards till today suddenly the aristocratic descendants (who more often than not, have upper class English accents due to being sent to upperclass English schools) started to appeal to the overseas descendants of the people forced off during the clearances for donations. They get little to no support from ordinary Scots who are taught the detailed history. Many overseas descendants, unfortunately, don't know much if anything about the clearances and don't realise that the money they donate is often used to prop up the lifestyles created off the backs of their ancestors suffering. I've visited some sites round Scotland that I have family connections to (I'm from New Zealand which had a high degree of Scottish immigration) and was approached to donate to the "clan fund" to maintain the "family seat" and told the toff with his hand out I knew about the details of how my ancestors were kicked of the land by his forebears. They turned round and stalked off pretty quick after that.
Definitely brought tears to my eyes seeing that abandoned village. Such a stunning place to live, even if a hard life back then, but completely destroyed by greed, corruption and politics. People thrived there for centuries (I wonder where the burial ground is). The people who were forced out must have been heartbroken. Beautiful photography, and the Merry Dancers--WOW. Thanks for your fantastic vids.
Hi Sarah. A Geordie lady here. Although in my late 60s I STILL love a good bargain. You made me giggle. I've lived in Canada for many years and my treat is from Wendy's. A fast food chain like McDonald's. You might know that poutine is a national dish. With a burger, and fries which have a lovely gravy on top with cheese curds . Delicious. Because of meds I can't have deep fried foods.so they make a baked potato with those toppings. Surprisingly good.by the time I get home the curds have melted into the gravy. A treat indeed. Blessings to you. Ps I enjoyed the field trips. I'm adding that those lights are magical and other worldly still for me. I can't imagine the feelings of people's gone by.
Great video today! My wife and I always look forward to watching. We loved to see the Northern lights! We've seen them here in Canada, and it just goes to show how connected we all are globally.
I live in South Africa and many of us are still proud of our Scottish heritage. We have pipe bands and highland dancing competitions. My mother's name is Heather 💜Your explanation of the highland clearances has helped me to understand why it has been so important to maintain these traditions. Thanks 💞
Post Culloden (the 1745 revolt was as much a Scottish civil war between the Highlands and Lowlands as a Scottish vs English conflict) there was systematic suppression of the Highland Gaelic speaking (and predominately Catholic) people, traditions and culture. The Clearances were a late stage extension of this effort to a degree though there were some limited clearances in the south. This even extended to people losing their names. The surnames Black, Grey and White only become common in Scotland from the mid-18th century onwards as an example. Things you think are iconicallyHighland or Scottish like the kilt and especially various clan tartans are largely 19th century inventions. Prior the mid 18th century, Highlanders from the same region would have worn the same tartan pattern regardless of the clan they belonged to as the weavers in the area would have used that one pattern and it was 1 size fits all for the large cloak cloth that was the kilt design highlanders used. Not the tight fitted 'skirt" that arose latter. Another sign is that little to no pre 1745 Highland bagpipe tunes or Gaelic used in modern Pipe bands repertoire despite the instrument having been used for centuries prior to highland/Gaelic suppression. In fact its likely the pipes themselves only continue as fairly common instruments due to their use by Highland soldiers forced to join British military units in order to survive. What you think are "traditional" often are 19th century Protestant, non gaelic, lowland Scot inventions or reinterpretation of Highland Scottish culture. That you think this links back to actual 'Highland tradition' means the suppression and propaganda are still working.
Oh wow Sarah!! The colour of that water!!! I see what you mean!! Breath taking!!! Oh Iain, I really felt for you with wet feet!! How magic Willie, to get the byre in order?!?!? I clapped for joy at how organised you got it!! As always, thank you xoxo
Hi from Nova Scotia(New Scotland), Canada. In 1773 a significant number of Scottish immigrants arrived in Nova Scotia on the ship Hector & established the town of Pictou. Nova Scotia has deep connections to Scotland with many Scottish descendants from the displaced Clans. Greatly enjoy your channels & especially the beauty of Skye & the Highlands. Would love to visit Scotland someday & explore my Scottish heritage but in the meantime I will vicariously visit via your channel. Thanks for sharing.🇨🇦
I wish I could give this video more than one thumbs up! The northern lights were so lovely, I have always wanted to see them in person. How blessed you are! Hugs for Jack, and for each other from the states!
Sarah and Willie, you make Sunday afternoons so enjoyable! I never know where all your adventures will take me each week, and I particularly enjoyed your ramble with Iain and his companion. The water looked like sapphires in your photography. It looked like the trip to Inverness was enjoyed by all, even Jack. You're not a nerd Sarah, I do shopping comparisons like you too! Have a great week, and I'll "see" you next Sunday!
I live in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. A lot of families here, my wife's included, were people from the clearances. Many Scots landed between here and Antigonish and Pictou, with many residents today still tracing their roots back to those early unintentional immigrants. Common names around here are MacNeil, MacPhee, MacDonald, MacLeod, MacMaster, MacIsaac, Rankin and so on. Some may be from that village or others like it. My mom's side hails from Scotland, too. They were Robertsons from further inland. Thank you for taking such an interest in the history and culture of our ancestral homeland. Should you ever find yourselves in Cape Breton, be sure to come say hello!
So blessed to have found this channel when it first started. Wonderful glimpses of the Skye Life every week with the fabulous Jack Spaniels et al 😂. Love you all 💜.
Willie you should do some metal detecting there and also by the river. Love the drone shots of the villages. The scenery is beautiful and I love your wanderings and watching you all relaxing in the hammock with your beers was a well deserved rest after that walk and to see the Aurora Borealis what a way to end an evening. I love the music you play on your videos Willie, very cheerful and foot tapping, makes one happy.
I enjoy watching your videos. My 4th Great Grandparents were from Skye and Appin. They were married in Skye and probably were in the Highland Clearances since it fits the timeline. They wound up in America in the Carolinas. I have more Scottish ancestors, but these two so far have been the easiest to find out about. I would love to come to Scotland one day. But if I don't get the chance, your videos are the next best thing to see what my great grandparents might have seen and where they walked. Thanks for the interesting videos with the historical information. I love your cottage too!
Love to see a Sea Eagle, I get Red Kites and Buzzards where I live. Stunning scenery, the AB so beautiful your so lucky to see that, wow. De Niro is a legend with the steam 😁.
Hi Willie & Sarah, love your video's, & the life style. Jack is a wonderfull companion. I'm a 3rd Gen Scot born Aussie. Both sets of grandparents immigrated from Scotland to Australia. My Laird's originally were driven down from the highlands of Caithness & Inverness & my children who are McLeods are from the Isle of Skye. Enjoyed hearing the stories of the old ruins & Willie's tunes sentimentally brings out my origins. True Fact: when the early McLeod's arrived in Victoria they bought the rocky higher ground to farm. What they didn't realise was the soil on the flat land was richer & grew better crops. We all know why they went for the high land.
Thank you for helping my 91 year old mother smile. She remembers most of the places where you travel to and enjoys reliving the outdoor life with you, from her bed. Thank you so much for giving my mum the opportunity to Living the Skye Life.. again.
You had me completely riveted with this video! I laughed, I cried….well maybe not cried but sad to think about the villagers forced to leave such a beautiful spot. The furthest north I’ve been is Stirling, but now I really what to explore Inverness and Skye and that’s down to you. Thank you for sharing the Aurora Borealis. Absolutely stunning! My favorite thing to do when I visit a new country is go into the grocery store and compare and contrast. Next time I visit Scotland, I’m going to need a month! Take care and see you next week. ❤
Thanks Carol! So glad you enjoyed the video and it makes you want to come back here 😊 Sarah lived in Stirling when she first moved to Scotland, so we know it well too!
Just love this channel, that road is one of my favourites too.. so beautiful, I have been coming up for over 45 years and usually base myself in Plockton.. I remember it well before it became so popular.. it’s like having a mini holiday watching you out and about.. the train journey from Kyle to Inverness is pretty spectacular too, I treated myself to a day out a couple of years ago.. x
Another excellent video from Skye and Inverness..so so.sad to see the clearance villages...drone footage was amazing showing the topography of the villages....great to see Jack still having a great time...many thanks to you both and best wishes
I am amazed you could take Jack into the clothes shop. You can’t in Australia. As for the food shopping savings I am sure it costs more at the co-op because they have to pay extra for delivery to Skye and they don’t have nearly as much turnover as the big shops. The scenery & ruins were fabulous.
Jack sure is living a beautiful and happy life in his new home environment. Thank you for showing us the city and the viewing of the map gives us a good reference. I had meant to ask you about the horses that you film. Just fantastic to hear that they are wild and live freely in this heavenly place you now call home. How blessed you are and blessed are we to have you two and Jack to share all this beauty 🥰🐕🇺🇸
Wonderful episode, it was so moving to see the remains of the village, such a difficult period of history and yet I suppose the enterprise of all those displaced Scots would have been lost to us (I always like a positive spin on real horror). I love your channel!
Always love your videos. I’m remembering my visit to the Highlands and an overnight in Inverness in 1983. The spirit of my great grandfather who emigrated to CT USA in the 1880s from Thurso resonated to your tales of the Clearances. My family was cleared. Thank you for telling .
From other channels that are restoring stone buildings one thing come through strongly - do not use cement mortar on the walls, the mortar is stronger than the stones and can crack them with temperature changes also the mortar does not allow the stone to breathe (from the moisture coming up from the ground - no damp proof layer). A lime mortar is what has been used by others.
This video (and all your stuff) is really good. Just remember, if everyone always rushes off to the big-town supermarkets, or gets “deliveries” of their shopping, the Co-op will be forced to close and you’ll lose the convenience it provides. Convenience has its own value.. Those logs could easily have been split with a “log-grenade” and a sledge hammer, club-hammer, or back of your axe. Willie, do you wear chainsaw trousers when using that saw? Chainsaw wounds are savage, and don’t heal quickly, but (even for experienced operators) are easily gained if protective gear is not used. Take care of yourself, you guys, we want plenty more videos! Les
Sarah, don't forget to factor in the cost/value of your time that it takes to drive far to shop. Especially if you are considering having food delivery. Be well from washington state USA ❤️
Good point Adrianne! We agreed that it’s something we will only do if there’s another reason to go to that place - such as visiting the shops that we needed to in Inverness or taking a day trip to go on a walk or visit somewhere. That way, it feels productive and enjoyable 😊
Watch out for that elbow. Cod oil capsules might be needed! Mine gave up in my late 40’s.. mind you… it means that youth was not wasted! Lol keep up the most excellent work. That byre conversion is so exciting and what a workout! Love to you all. X
The ruins history is heartbreaking. The Northern Lights were spectacular. Jack may prefer puddle water as it may be warmer and easier on his overheated stomach.
Aldi!!!!! Love them. I got stuffed mushrooms there yesterday and ate them for lunch today!!! Yummm!! 😊 Thank you for taking all of us along with you. 🙏🏼🙌🏼
Hey, so I'm the random guy who called out 'Jack Spaniels' in Inverness when you were across visiting. Love your videos on a Sunday, good old family viewing in our house, informative, interesting and just good fun. Keep it up. May see you on Skye this Summer.
Today's video brought me to tears, happy ones, of course 😊 The northern light that was captured simply did exactly that. Thank you again for sharing your lives with us on your amazing channel. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit!
Nice to see you gave yourselves a small break in Inverness. However you let yourselves down by giving in to the scourge of the 21st century. McDonalds burgers, and doughnuts. However you jaded up for it with your walk to the old village, which was very interesting. Again like your back ground music Willy. Let’s see more of your art Sarah. Stay safe
Thanks for giving me a little peek at Inverness. Back in grade school, which was about 55 years ago. I had a penpal in Inverness and I’ve never seen what it looked like so I enjoyed the little tour, even though there are lots of brand new stuff there. I did see the old stuff too. Thank you. Have a wonderful day. ❤
Another lovely video as always 😃 Our dogs also prefer drinking muddy water when we're out walking. If it's not muddy, they'll get in and stir it up! We shop at Aldi as well. The Co-op have some lovely produce but they are quite pricey aren't they? I love Aldi's flavoured gins...Rhubarb & Ginger especially.
@@livingtheskyelife I'm not a whisky drinker, but I love their wines too. I've tried their Cassario Rum and that's delicious... nice for a change 😃🥃 Hubby prefers their Ballycastle to Baileys as well 😁
My one Scottish ancestor, a Fraser, came to Canada to fight in the war of Quebec city. Since they won he was given land. He was from the Inverness area
I haven’t been to Inverness since 1995, so interested to see the new developments. You have to be careful in Mountain Warehouse. They are expensive unless you get the ‘sale’ prices. Really interesting walk over to the abandoned settlement. How amazing to see the eagles.
I just look forward to and enjoy sitting with my cup of tea and cake watching your channel on Sunday evenings … much better than the beeb!!! What amazing adventures, thank you for the amazing history and the wonderful jack …keep sharing guys , love it!!
Spent a few nights in Inverness on our railway trip around Scotland. We thought it was the cleanest (as in most litter-free) city we’d ever visited. Really enjoyed our walks around the pretty parts of town.
Thanks for sharing your life, especially the combination of history, culture, and explanation of the subjects seen on the ground and from the sky. As is the case with your other channels, every episode is a treat!
Great video as usual. loved seeing the abandoned village and hearing the history of their demise, very sad indeed. The Northern Lights were sensational! 🥰
It would be fun to metal detect around the ruins if the property owner would give you permission. I'm really enjoying your adventures. Seeing Inverness and Portree through your eyes is nice. I visited those places between 2016 and 2018. I've been missing Scotland so much! From Virginia, USA. Our Highland games and Festival are this weekend (2 & 3 Sept) at a place called Great Meadows in The Plains, VA. Only 15 min from my house! Lots of fun. The area reminds me of Scotland 😊
Hi Another great video with breathtaking scenery and interesting and historical locations. Would you metal detect these locations? Inverness looked interesting and not all that far to do a major shopping when required. Make a day of it like you just did. Looking forward to watching the remodeling and shed building with Jack's help. The Northern Lights were certainly a nice bonus. See you next week. Thank you.
Ha, my soul connected deeply to all the feelings when Willie laughed after saying he'd have to move things *again* ... Adulting! Good luck with all the projects and thanks for sharing a bit of Skye!
The aurora was magnificent. The empty village was very sobering. Y’all need to get some log splitting wedges and a sledgehammer. My sister and I used to split massive logs when we were little. It’s so much easier and safer than using an axe.

I remember it well before it became so popular.. it’s like having a mini holiday watching you out and about.. the train journey from Kyle to Inverness is pretty spectacular too, I treated myself to a day out a couple of years ago.. x
Ahh we love Plockton too! We are hoping to get back there soon 😊
Unfortunately, I'm not able to travel any longer. Fortunately I've found these you-tubbers Thanks
Oh my...I wish I could be your neighbour and live in that beautiful place!!
My DNA says I'm 50% Scot and am so drawn to the scenery and history. Thank you for sharing❤
❤Oh my those Northern Lights! Amazing!!❤
Excellent! Superb videography and editing! Thanks.
Thanks Pam!!
Yummm!! 😊
Thank you for taking all of us along with you. 🙏🏼🙌🏼
Sounds yummy!
Oh thank you ,we have spent many holidays in Scotland and enjoyed walks along the river Ness with our dogs, such lovely memories ❤
Thank you for the history lesson. The “Clearing” may be why my ancestors came to the Americas.
Wow you did amazing on those logs. Beautiful stack.
Thanks!!
Great video. Jack spaniels is such a lucky dog . 🐱 X
Guys WOOL! It's warmer and much more ecologically friendly than plastic fleece.
Beautiful country. My next big trip is definitely going to be Scotland.
Good plan Gerry! Hope you make it here someday soon!
Stay safe
Inverness is easily my favourite place in Scotland. Go up a couple of times a year and stay with family xxx
Another lovely video. I look forward to Sunday evenings! Hi from South Devon.
Don't forget the Co-oP payes a dividend to its members.
Aldi’s own brand whisky and wine are our favourites 😊 You can’t get them in Co-op, so we stock up when we can!
@@livingtheskyelife I'm not a whisky drinker, but I love their wines too. I've tried their Cassario Rum and that's delicious... nice for a change 😃🥃 Hubby prefers their Ballycastle to Baileys as well 😁
I loved the "fleece lining" song. Hahahaha
Another fun sky excursion! I liked how Dinero did not like to get his feet wet! Nice Dinero has loving owners now. We have a Adli’s too on the USA. 🦅
another cool wee video guys, always a giggle, love n peace
Thanks so much!
Only recently found your channel - it's a real joy and expertly put together. Enjoying the journey and loving Jack Spaniels!
What a treat to see the northern lights, thanks for that and the rest of the video💕💕💕
Sounds like spring has come. I hear the birds! I loved seeing the old village.great music and editing. You guys are getting professional!
We have a rescue greyhound here in Oz. She wouldn't be crossing that river either!! She also does the zoomies. Nice one guys.
Skye looks to be an amazing location to live.. Hope you are able to live there forever. Wish I was closer. I would be living there..
Great video. Thank you for taking us along to Inverness to shop. I love the doughnuts! Beautiful views !
I forgot to mention how cute Jack looked in the back seat on the way home ❤.
Thank you for sharing your adventures with me.
You know you like a show when you start singing along to the closing song.😀
Probably ONE of the best ever tubes you have created so much interesting content Sarha and Billie and not forgetting jake spaniels
Love the Aurora 😍🏴
Beautiful northern lights. Definitely on my bucket list to see them in real time someday.
Always look forward to your videos. A nice Sunday treat. Northern Lights were stunning ! See you next week.
So look forward to seeing your videos every week.
Hi
Another great video with breathtaking scenery and interesting and historical locations.
Would you metal detect these locations?
Inverness looked interesting and not all that far to do a major shopping when required. Make a day of it like you just did.
Looking forward to watching the remodeling and shed building with Jack's help.
The Northern Lights were certainly a nice bonus.
See you next week.
Thank you.
Great stuff and there are times when only a Mac D will do😁
Your videos are so good to watch, thank you for the interesting topics you cover from one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
I kept thinking get the enormous pile of logs into the storage. As it so often rains on you there. Love the videos bless all three of you. ❤❤❤
18:09 That would make a great painting, to go with the other one you painted.
Ha, my soul connected deeply to all the feelings when Willie laughed after saying he'd have to move things *again* ... Adulting! Good luck with all the projects and thanks for sharing a bit of Skye!
“All about balance “ yup 😁😇
The aurora was magnificent. The empty village was very sobering.
Y’all need to get some log splitting wedges and a sledgehammer. My sister and I used to split massive logs when we were little. It’s so much easier and safer than using an axe.
