These type of bop valves are last ditch effort and really need to be changed with better designed bop valves. Mostly used on ocean based drill platforms can't be tested periodically for proper operation and virtually no need for on land based oil production fields and using in deep water or land based leave the owner with crushed piping and production stopped. The annular type can be upgraded to work as a pressure\ flow control valve. With the deep horizon type bop valves need to go as if they work when needed leave crushed piping and no proper way of repairing or abandoning as now access is eliminated. There is no way of isolating pressure if the Bop valves are in need of repair or replacement. Testing to check valve operation periodically can't be done. I'm the designer of the ca spool valve that stopped the deep horizon's leak and have copies I submitted as well as emails but since I didn't patent my design was cheated out of as I was emailed back by the "horizon helpline" and informed my design was unusable. Several weeks later I watched as my design stopped the macondo wells runaway leak. If ocean based drill platforms use this type of bop system I plan on starting a deep water repair company and am working on designing bop valves that can handle kicks, leaks as well as repairing or maintaining to leave the well in production.
