Ha. I remember this chewing gum incident back in 1982 or so very well. This came up in the "Ethiroli" as well. Also, yes I remember MGR commending the boys for their performance. And yes, Valngaimaan Shanmugasundaram Pillai was a top notch Thavil Vidhwan. Remember his lec dem in 1986. KVN was presiding. He kept saying "Asaadhyam Asaadhyam" after the lec dem. Tanjavur Upendran was asking a lot of questions about Thavil itself and Thavil playing.
One has to be in the music world to know the happenings! While the proceedings in Valluivar Kottam was on, the great patron of music wanted me to meet him alone - Tanipatta murayil Ungalai Paarkkanam...."
BIGGEST RECOGNITION and the first one as Child Artistes was from ALL INDIA RADIO grading them as senior artistes as part of world celebrations of International Child's Year in 1977 THAT TOO at the initiative of FINAL AUDITION BOARD asking Chennai Vanoli Nilayam, to send their taped records - this was probably as a result of the great public approbation and rave reviews by Hindustan Times, Statesman, Times of India and all other leading Dailies published from Delhi on their concert at VYGIAN BHAVAN in aid of Prime Minister's Flood Relief fund in the year 1977! At the top of all, they have been the youngest A top Grade artistes of All India Radio!

I have heard them playing at a very young age in Calcutta.God bless them
Beautiful story! Just curious- why haven't you been blessed with the Sangitha Kalanidhi award yet?? You both deserve it long, long ago!
That is responsibility of MMA, who many a times skip award for deserving artists for reasons they only know. Glamour n proximity takes the front seat.
@@janakiramvenkatakrishnanj8365 Great artiste some time miss! Lalgudi Jayaraman, Madurai Somu, Sirkazhi Govnidarajan are some of them!
