In case the comment section is wondering: The K5CA is everywhere in Canada, its a mandated horn for every passenger railroad (Every unit has to have it. They can have another horn that isn't the K5CA just as long as the K5CA is present, hence VIAs double horns) except Ontario Northland, somehow ONR gets away with using other horns. A lot of the the original K5LAs on VIAs P42s were replaced to K5CAs so most of them have double K5CAs.
Great video. It's been known that the VIA Rail P42s still operate to this day although they will be retired soon or will be out of service in a while although it's not determined. When I return back to Canada, I may catch some VIA Rail P42s before it's fade out of their service legs.
Nice video about VIA's P42s. One thing I apprecuate is the local horn, the K5CA. Together with the nice original scheme it gives the units a different and distinctive personallity, together with other derails. It is really nice to see thess P42s flying low at speed. Sometime ago, they were the only umits allowed to operate at 100 Mph, and only with LRC or Renaussance cars (these were supposed or are already out of service on Corridor trains. F40s and HEP cars were only allowed to operate at 95. Inicially also the Chargers & Venture consists were also limited at 95 Mph, and I don't know if this limit was revised. Other things I like; the somehow classic track structure and the generous and liberal use of the horns.
From what I've heard, there is a possibility that some of these engines and cars that will be replaced by Chargers & Ventures, could make their way onto the Sudbury-White River route, but only time will tell.
I've heard that too but it sounds like that is just speculation at this point. I think if they send any locomotives to replace the RDCs on that train, it will be the F40s, but I'm not even sure that will happen at this point.
@@CoasterFan2105 VIA will have an abundance of F40s once they're all moved out of the corridor so its likely that some F40s and some HEP2 cars will be used for the Lake Superior service once the RDCs go on their way out
Hi Mike Armstrong this is Isaiah wiley from myrtle Beach south Carolina saying hello and great work on a via rail p42 locomotive video it seems that amtrak and via rail Canada are brothers on f40 locomotives and p42 genesis locomotives they are so popular and terrific 😊❤ on long distance trains and corridor trains, it's going to be a sad shame 😢when they will be in storage and retired, anyway keep up the great work on RUclips because you are one of the best north American railroad video makers ever good luck 👍 😀.
And I have a question - How do you keep your tripod/camera from shaking when you are so close to the tracks? I use a normal tripod and it always vibrates and shakes, always making a train I'm recording hard to see when watching the video. But this mainly happens with trains going at a high speed.
Mike man, welcome back to Canada, you'll have to come up to Sudbury next time to film the Budd RDC's very soon while they are still in service., won't be for very much longer though. VIA's P42 fleet is actually a piggy back order off of Amtrak's last P42 order. Amtrak didn't need or want the last 21 units so they were sold to VIA at a discounted rate.
Awesome video! Man, I always thought these Via P42’s were so iconic and especially to me being around Toronto at the time, hearing those K5CA’s, it will be sad to see them go because personally I like them more than Amtrak.
Nice video mate! As a rail enthusiast myself in Australia, or gunzel (the Australian meaning of rail enthusiast), I honestly dislike how the K5CA sounds, and it doesn’t surprise me that it is mandated by the Canadian government for all passenger trains to have the horn installed including on Via Rail’s P42DC locomotives. I’m sure the K5UL-AU-LS horns (which is installed on newly built UGL C44aci locomotives) installed on CT Rail’s GP40 are a much better horn in my opinion!
Some of the VIA Rail P42's did have NF K5LA's that sounded great. The VIA P42's actually have 2 horns. I'm assuming that the engineers rarely use the K5LA though.
@@TheAustinSubRailfan I took VIA Rail, and I was in the first car of the train, behind the locomotive, and it seemed like the K5CA horn was mostly used. VIA Rail Genesis engines do have the K5LA, but yeah, I also think the K5LA is rarely used too.
That K5CA horn is not very melodious. I like the K3H better a few of them had one bell that was slightly different which gave the K3H a major chord. Also the K5H has a good sound.
Via Rail is a Canadian Passenger Railway in Canada and Amtrak is a American Passenger Railroad and Amtrak Train serves in the United States (except Wyoming and South Dakota) and Amtrak train only serves in provinces of Canada like Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia

K3L's use to be the Standard in Canada
Fun fact, VIA's new Venture sets do not have K5CAs, instead they have a variant of the Kockums Sonics MKT-75 which produces a similar sound.
@@KangaRueProductions I want the K3L horn back
The F40's have more tasteful K1L13 horns as their main horn. I wish the P42DCs also had the same horn
Grand video of these cool Via Rail P42DC’s. I have remember riding behind one of them back in 2012 when I was a little child.
Thanks, Nathan!
Amazing video, I sure will miss the P42s when they get retired

I’m gonna miss that teal and gold livery.
It's a very sharp looking scheme!
If only they still had that scheme on the Chargers
