  • Van Lifer's are increasingly finding that they are being banned from their usual overnight boondocking locations because they are being blamed for creating a mess, leaving behind trash and food waste. What can we do as a collective community to help solve this problem? Also applies to RV's, motorhomes, and skoolies.

Reminds me of the broken windows theory of criminology i.e. "...visible signs of crime, anti-social behavior and civil disorder create an urban environment that encourages further crime and disorder, including serious crimes" (Wilson, James Q.; Kelling, George L., March 1982).
It's definitely up to those who care enough about these environments to be the better person and clean up. Anything less, it seems, would normalize these poor choices.

Yeah, well said... as unfortunate as it is, I think it's all true. But like I say in the video, I think there are far more people who care, so they should be able to counteract the bad behaviour.

I am ever so irritated by people trashing beautiful spaces but there is no easy solution. Jen and I grumble about it all the time yet we pick up the mess when we see it. I feel like if more people took it upon themselves to pick up a little bit, we wouldn't see any. As well I think good people should call out the bad behaviour. A little public shaming. I realize that is not always going to be the right approach but if the all good folks pitch in some it would go a long way to minimizing the impact of a few a-holes.

Yes, it is difficult to find a balance on this, but you certainly can't go wrong by pitching in and cleaning up a mess when you see one. Good job!

Thank you for this. I live in Juneau, Alaska, and van folk end up spending time in pullouts along sided our roads. Sometimes they set up so well that the pullout is unavailable to locals who also want to whale and sunset watch or hike many of our local trails to cabins and campsites. I have observed an extra load of trash, including parts from repairs and van building. Yes, some locals are also guilty of doing car/truck/van cleaning or repairing at these places. I have picked it up trash quite grumpily but picked it up nonetheless. The other issue is disposing of the contents of toilets and pee bottles and other liquids including fluid changes. Alaska has strong laws protecting our salmon habitats and rivers and streams. These HAVE been contaminated which is a hefty fine and jail time. We, locals, are getting just a bit grumpy, the most grumpy are advocating to end the option of overnighting at all, let alone several days at a time in these beautiful spaces.

I was touring Alaska in 2016 and both the people and the land were absolutely stunning! I can understand locals getting frustrated. I do hope it is indeed the vast MINORITY that are being a problem - and like I mention in the video, it only takes a few... thanks for everything you do to cleanup any mess left behind by these people. 🙏

@@SwellerVanDweller, The issue is the less the number of people who are disrespectful but rather the sheer volume of van folk. 2% of 100 is different than 2% of 2000 or 20,000.

If vanlifers are seen around trash, we become associated with it.
That's why I clean up any trash near the area I'm staying and move often. Staying in camper tradition. Leave no trace behind.

Times are tough, but like I say in the video, I think it only takes a few people to make a big mess, so if the majority who do care pitch in and do a little cleaning, well, that should go a long way to helping.
