  • Cirrhosis is the common final pathway for a wide variety of liver disease and is defined as the fibrous replacement of normal liver architecture with nodules. In a world where the obesity epidemic is raging, NAFLD and NASH will soon become the most common cause of cirrhosis. In this presentation, we discuss the pathogenesis (activation of stellate cell into a myofibroblast), aetiology, diagnosis and management of cirrhosis. The scoring systems for cirrhosis are discussed and these include the AST platelet ratio index, the bonacini cirrhosis discriminant score and the Lok index.

The timing for progression is variable between patients and depends on comorbidities.
