I actually like the vn better just because the animes concentration on making shirou look outmatched actually makes his acheivement feel lesser and plot armory rather than earned. The vn had a good balance of gil being a douche but also shirou just hard countering him when activating ubw causing catharsis when gil freaks out. In the anime shirou is just running around like a moron while gil stands in place passively shooting without a care in the world and shirou doesnt even win cause the reality marble fades. Compared to shirou almost killing gil before gil and the reality marble are sucked into the grail void
An epic and a pretty well done anime adaptation of a stronger fighter utterly dominating the weaker one. I like the additions: Shirou surviving being fully surrounded by gob portals from every dirrection proves him to be above the supposedly strongest round table knight for whom there was no way to survive 16 gob portals. Gilgamesh hesitating to pull out Ea further teases his fans into falsely believing in Gil's capability to defeat Shirou with it. Shirou simply running and jumping around his opponent is a cool way to reconfirm his words from the visual novel about their speed difference.
Theoretically he could protect himself by attacking with gate of babylon while using eia, but he was too cocky to actually think of something like that against an opponent like shirou. Gilga tried to use eia in the end of the fight, but shirou already got upper hand in this fight by then
Had Shiro stopped mocking Gilgamesh and had he pulled out Ea at any point in this fight it all would have been over this actually shows that even though how dumb shiro might be he's a cunning foe when it comes to battle sometimes like EMIYA is a mid tier heroic spirit but due to how he uses his UBW he could even rival top tiers
His ability to think on the fly is really highlighted in the VN(which makes sense considering its a novel and can spend alot of time on his inner monologue). Even when he is only using Gradation Air to strengthen a rolled up poster(I forget if it was a rolled up mat or something else) to use as a weapon, he's always thinking during fights. Kinda makes sense with his Magecraft, since it focuses on analyzing and either repairing, reinforcing or enhancing.
If Shirou can block heaven's feel Salters's excalibur morgan, who was "in a sense more powerful than she was in life", while alive Gilgamesh whose Enuma Elish is stronger than his servant's self according to fsf, per Nasu's own statement only beats alive Salter specificaly due to his cunning... you get where this this going. "Oh but is Ea not the strongest noble lalala in the nasuverse, who defeated BB and destroyed and recreated the the world 7 times" - No, incarnated Gilgamesh, using "all his might" barely and relatively slowly overpowers a nerfed stay night Arotria's fully sealed Excalibur. He had numerous outside buffs with BB and the whole blabla about destroying and recreating the world 7 times were simply the words describing how the vitness of his fight versus Enkidu "felt as if". "Oh, but did not Belerophon offset 80% of Excalibur Morgan's light ?" - That does not mean, that it was blocking 80% of Excalibur's destructive power from behind Rho Aias, in which case the horse would have goten annahilated just like it happened in fate raute. "Oh, but did not Rho Aias get pirced by a mediocre B+ thrown Gabolg". - As dirrectly written in the day 14 of the ubw raute: Cu put all of his mana and might into that thrown Gaibolg, giving it back the passives about reversing cause and effect and always piercing the heart + adding to it becoming unblockble, undodgeble, capable of piercing anything without fail, on top of the spear allredy doing the "spear dmg + target's hp" amount of dmg. Something simular happened in american singularity, where Mash + a bunch of other servants needed Merlin to save them from Cu Alter's thrown gai bolg. The thing that saved Emiya - was Rho Aias's capability to block any projectile.

To be that Nasu-verse nerd: the counter to his ability is that UBW doesn't just give Shirou a copy of the weapon, but the skills and abilities of said weapon user while the weapon is being "wielded". Gilgamesh may have every weapon's "original" in his Gate of Babylon, but Shirou can outperform any of them at any given moment during a clash. Against an opponent skilled with a single weapon/Noble Phantasm, they can pretty handily stand against UBW since the weapons more or less only last for a single strike while they would be utterly overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of Gilgamesh's weapons(or he likely has a tool - or Ea - to exploit a weakness), but Shirou is almost uniquely situated to counter his one major advantage. Not correcting you in any way, just that Shirou/EMIYA are my favorite protagonists in VN/anime/etc and Gilgamesh is one of my favorite villains of all time, with UBW, Gradation Air, and GoB being some of my favorite abilities in media.

It’s made very clear in the visual novel that the reason Shirou won is cause he attacked first. In a fight between Shirou and Gil without Ea the first one to attack will always win just cause of how their abilities work.

You missed the point if you think Shirou winning is "plot armor". People need to stop thinking of anime/other media character fights as just "Whoever has the highest power level wins". Shirou both in use of UBW and especially in personality is a direct counter to Gilgamesh. Superman would easily one shot Batman if he just moved at the speed of light and sneak attacked him with a punch that could flatten a continent. But that completely misses the point of the characters.
Wasted oportunity. If they replaced Shirou with a legit badass like Saber or even Archer, that battle would have been epic. This felt like watching an animated version of a twelve year old's self-insert fanciction. Plot armor has neven been thicker.
I liked Rin and Saber in season 1, but season 2 was just stupid. Rin and Saber were dumb. Saber is really the same person who never sees her mistakes, letting Shirou (who most of the time is useless and defenseless) fight Archer (a murderer). Avalon is just plot armor for Shirou so he doesn't die. Gilgamesh is a fraud; he lost to some useless teenager. I would understand if he lost to Archer (who has experience, knows how to kill, and should understand his abilities better than Shirou).
Okay first all, the fight between Shirou and Archer (Which I assume is EMIYA) is a fight of will, the whole point of the fight is to see if Shirou will or ideology is really strong enough for him to continue. Secondly, if I remember correctly Shirou is literally the one who said to Saber many time to not interrupt his fight with Archer. Thirdly Avalon is literally the whole point of why Shirou can summon Saber in the first place, because Kiritsugu made Shirou to have Avalon. Fourthly, the whole characterization of Gilgamesh is literally his arrogance or his ego. The main reason of why he got defeated by Shirou is because he never consider him an enemy in the first place, he even insult him as a "Faker". He would never use EA to fight Shirou because for him Shirou is just a useless teenager who have a skill to copy thus making him a Faker. Also in the VN, in one of the route, it explain that Gilgamesh is really weak in a close up battle, the only thing he good at is his noble phantasm which is rate EX in the VN. Archer also mention that the only one who can defeat Gilgamesh is Shirou, because of 2 reason. First his Reality Marbel (Unlimited Blade Work) allow him to create and copy many sword which counter Gate of Babylon, secondly Gilgamesh would understimate Shirou and not use EA right away.
Congrats on missing the point of the character motivations, the themes of the different routes, how the abilities of the characters work, etc. Archer, if anything, would be MUCH more likely to lose to Gilgamesh if only because he WOULDN'T be as arrogant towards someone like him(he'd still be pretty arrogant though) and would both don his armor and use Enuma Elish much sooner in the fight. Shirou, from personality to his use of UBW was specifically a perfect counter to Gilgamesh.
Gilgamesh is better at unarmed combat, specifically grappling. He wrestled the bull of the heavens. He never mastered any of his weapons except Ea and Enkidu.
@@lorenbrown7100 kinda unnecessary and redundant since Ea, Enkidu, and his weapon barrage is all her needs. No weapon in his arsenal is stronger than Ea. Its history is older than any other weapon and it has a dimension cutting effect that destroys any defense (Except for something like Avalon that moves the user to another pokey dimension to shield them from harm) Enkidu can hold down any target long enough for him to kill them with his weapon barrage. His GoB has enough weapons with passive anti healing/regeneration effects. It's his arrogance that holds him back. Especially when he refuses to use his necklace of clairvoyance and super hax.
He not actually bad at sword play, he is bad compared to swordman servants, and shirou copies also copies the original owner swordplay(so gil is cooked)
@@tavoa952 Exactly. Gil never had to really learn to fight much better than the average person since he can literally spam Noble Phantasms like rounds from a machine gun. And because he's got a pocket nuke as a contingency plan. UBW is a direct counter to GoB because it not only creates weapons as fast, but because it also gives the skill and abilities of the original wielder while Shirou is using it. Each individual clash is basically Gilgamesh fighting the memory of a swordsman who honed and mastered that weapon, and he can't outpace and overwhelm UBW like he would any other more skilled Heroic Spirit. And because he thinks of Shirou as a mongrel lower than trash, he'd never tarnish his pride by pulling out the big guns(and admit there is a chance he'd otherwise lose) until it was basically too late.
Just two archers living in the moment, not a bow in sight.

You missed the point if you think Shirou winning is "plot armor". People need to stop thinking of anime/other media character fights as just "Whoever has the highest power level wins". Shirou both in use of UBW and especially in personality is a direct counter to Gilgamesh.
Superman would easily one shot Batman if he just moved at the speed of light and sneak attacked him with a punch that could flatten a continent. But that completely misses the point of the characters.

Wasted oportunity. If they replaced Shirou with a legit badass like Saber or even Archer, that battle would have been epic. This felt like watching an animated version of a twelve year old's self-insert fanciction. Plot armor has neven been thicker.
Not fanfiction at all. It's 100% in character for both Shirou and Gilgamesh that the fight went the way it did. Its even better explained in the VN.
Archer would've gotten merked Saber already fought Gilgamesh in another story so they weren't gonna repeat it here.

I liked Rin and Saber in season 1, but season 2 was just stupid. Rin and Saber were dumb. Saber is really the same person who never sees her mistakes, letting Shirou (who most of the time is useless and defenseless) fight Archer (a murderer). Avalon is just plot armor for Shirou so he doesn't die. Gilgamesh is a fraud; he lost to some useless teenager. I would understand if he lost to Archer (who has experience, knows how to kill, and should understand his abilities better than Shirou).
Okay first all, the fight between Shirou and Archer (Which I assume is EMIYA) is a fight of will, the whole point of the fight is to see if Shirou will or ideology is really strong enough for him to continue. Secondly, if I remember correctly Shirou is literally the one who said to Saber many time to not interrupt his fight with Archer. Thirdly Avalon is literally the whole point of why Shirou can summon Saber in the first place, because Kiritsugu made Shirou to have Avalon. Fourthly, the whole characterization of Gilgamesh is literally his arrogance or his ego. The main reason of why he got defeated by Shirou is because he never consider him an enemy in the first place, he even insult him as a "Faker". He would never use EA to fight Shirou because for him Shirou is just a useless teenager who have a skill to copy thus making him a Faker. Also in the VN, in one of the route, it explain that Gilgamesh is really weak in a close up battle, the only thing he good at is his noble phantasm which is rate EX in the VN. Archer also mention that the only one who can defeat Gilgamesh is Shirou, because of 2 reason. First his Reality Marbel (Unlimited Blade Work) allow him to create and copy many sword which counter Gate of Babylon, secondly Gilgamesh would understimate Shirou and not use EA right away.
Congrats on missing the point of the character motivations, the themes of the different routes, how the abilities of the characters work, etc.
Archer, if anything, would be MUCH more likely to lose to Gilgamesh if only because he WOULDN'T be as arrogant towards someone like him(he'd still be pretty arrogant though) and would both don his armor and use Enuma Elish much sooner in the fight. Shirou, from personality to his use of UBW was specifically a perfect counter to Gilgamesh.

Why does he suck at sword play?
Gilgamesh is better at unarmed combat, specifically grappling. He wrestled the bull of the heavens. He never mastered any of his weapons except Ea and Enkidu.

@@lorenbrown7100 kinda unnecessary and redundant since Ea, Enkidu, and his weapon barrage is all her needs. No weapon in his arsenal is stronger than Ea. Its history is older than any other weapon and it has a dimension cutting effect that destroys any defense (Except for something like Avalon that moves the user to another pokey dimension to shield them from harm)
Enkidu can hold down any target long enough for him to kill them with his weapon barrage.
His GoB has enough weapons with passive anti healing/regeneration effects.
It's his arrogance that holds him back. Especially when he refuses to use his necklace of clairvoyance and super hax.
He not actually bad at sword play, he is bad compared to swordman servants, and shirou copies also copies the original owner swordplay(so gil is cooked)
@@tavoa952 Exactly. Gil never had to really learn to fight much better than the average person since he can literally spam Noble Phantasms like rounds from a machine gun. And because he's got a pocket nuke as a contingency plan. UBW is a direct counter to GoB because it not only creates weapons as fast, but because it also gives the skill and abilities of the original wielder while Shirou is using it. Each individual clash is basically Gilgamesh fighting the memory of a swordsman who honed and mastered that weapon, and he can't outpace and overwhelm UBW like he would any other more skilled Heroic Spirit. And because he thinks of Shirou as a mongrel lower than trash, he'd never tarnish his pride by pulling out the big guns(and admit there is a chance he'd otherwise lose) until it was basically too late.
