This was something I hadn't realized, but wow! I thought "Charge = Attack Nearest, Advance = Advance towards nearest enemy formation (even if it means turning around constantly), Follow Me = Follows Party Leader" and when you died they just went to the AI taking command and running the battle automatically, not using the charge command. So, if I eliminate an enemy lord, their troops should just be using the charge command as you said here and will follow that, rather than the AI running it entirely?
Though in my experience, you still need to babysit the troops to some degree. There was one particularly awesome battle that I had as Vlandia against the Battanians on that forested map - not the one with the giant hill, the one with the ridge by one of the spawn points. We had the ridge; so I took my crossbows and put them on the ridge to shoot the enemy while most of my troops were just behind due to the Fians present. Battanians advanced, I moved my on infantry up front while my crossbows kept shooting. I used a LOT of hold position to move the troops back and forth with the occasional charge once the melee began, but mostly I just kept the positions, then as the enemy started to lose ground I kept moving the infantry forward via a Hold Position command to make sure they did not lose the momentum and would run down the archers rather than bog themselves down. It was one hell of a crushing defeat for Caladog. Of course, that took a lot of focus on my end, but it still shows how even the simple commands used effectively can make a huge difference.
Though as to community wish list? Don't know what's on it, but I'd like a little more choices regarding our starting clan - as it is, I just am not fond of the 'start as an entirely unskilled 25 year old (better than a 30 year old at least...) with a brother that just vanishes'. At the very least, if our characters are going to start middle aged, they should have the skills to match rather than being worse than even the young 18 year old lordlings that need to be tutored by quests. Heck, give us a full on character creator of the Crusader Kings 2 Ruler Designer style! That'd be perfect.
But 'till then, there's always the dev console to at least change the main hero's age to something more reasonable to their skill level.

I use similar but slightly different tactics. When I have a typical mixed army, it usually goes like this...
-Horse Archers, advance. I haven't really noticed what you did about them, they still seem to circle and shoot from what I've seen. This messes up the enemy formation.
-Archers advance. By the time they get there, a lot of the enemy won't be facing them because the HA already disrupted their formation.
-After giving the archers a head start, Infantry charge. They'll be charging into a mess, so have an advantage. I wish there was an "advance slowly in formation" command.
-Heavy Cav, follow me, Companions (set to their own numbers) follow me. I circle around the left side of their formation, hitting any enemy Cav on the way, until I am behind the enemy.
-Heavy Cav charge. They charge into the rear of the formation while the infantry hits the front. I keep my Companions with me and just try to sow discord wherever seems useful. I try not to die because as soon as I do my soldiers start trying to see if they can fight holding spears with their butt and they all get killed.
-Once they enemy is down to half, or I see more than a couple of recruits fleeing, All Charge. This makes the enemy rout in full, and makes my guys (except the infantry, lazy bastards) hunt the people fleeing. One companion I have on a separate number from the rest, If I'm pretty hurt I'll charge the rest and keep the single one as a bodyguard and just move off to safety.
Like you, I think Infantry seems to be the least important piece of that puzzle. My current playthrough I pushed leadership hard so I could get disciplinarian, now I try to collect Forest Bandits to make into an all Fion army. I have two companions running parties and formed an army with them (not sure if you covered this, this is THE way to work leadership), I gave one all my Heavy Cav and the other all my Horse Archers, while I just run with Bandits and Fions. Can't trust the companions to level my bandits, they keep promoting them to the crappy regular Batt troops instead of raising them to full Forest Bandit and promoting to Fion.

The enemy 9/10 charges straight away with cav if they have it - always on my left flank. I meet these with my horse archers following me and they wheel round I get my cav to charge.
Then it's horse archers stinging their infantry until they charge. Pull horse archers around and behind them to deal with enemy archers.
Once the 2 lines of infantry meet, cav and infantry charge.
The only variation on this is if I'm outnumbered 3 to 1 or 30-40% of their force is cav.
When out numbered I follow the same routine for their charging cav, and the pull everyone back into position. I've got top tier infantry so I try and funnel their cav into my front line where Sturgian shock troops make short work o f them. Then it's charge, engage, when the enemy retreats, take positions again. It has been successful, but the last update has seen me lose a couple of battles against a superior force.

  • @ElimRawne

    The basics:
Start of battle with a big enemy army larger than you in power:
Frantically look around for advantegeous location to place own army
Put archers highest if possible, then infantry underneath
While they're running: Press 1 then F3 and F2, press 3 then F3 and F2 (infantry and cavalry shields up)
Also press 2 and F3 and F3 (archers loose formation)
Put cav aside infantry, put cav archers aside other side of infantry but if possible set cav archers higher
Then go stand on high up with army because the enemy cav will come to harass us
This is not Warband, do not go pulling the enemy to you, you will probably die when making one mistake
When the enemy is charging en mass: press F6 and try to stay alive while fighting! O7
During the battle I will decide which commands I deem necessary but only when needed.
Charge I never use except in special occasions like bandit lairs close combat when shieldwall is too slow for my own protection while drawing enemies to me.

  • @TheGamer-ux2lr
    @TheGamer-ux2lr 4 года назад +12

Destroy enemy cav in two easy steps. F1-2 (Follow me). When your cav collides with the enemy cav then select F1-3 (Charge). They will go melee and destroy the enemy cav. Once the enemy cav is finished switch them back to follow me and then release them on the remains of the enemy infantry and archers. In large battles I also use shield wall to position my infantry about 100 meters from the enemy infantry. The enemy will charge your shield wall (Even on defense). This allows you to bring your cav into the back or flank of the enemy infantry which cuts losses of your cav and demoralizes the enemy infantry. When the enemy breaks I release my infantry with the charge command and they will tear through the enemy archers as they and the cav chases down the broken infantry that has fled. Most time the broken infantry will run directly back towards their archers which minimizes leakage to the left and right and maintains some cohesion of your troops.

I find archers are more effecient when ordered to scatter.
As a safer alternative to guiding cavalry with the follow command. get a position with a good view of the fight, then order them to move here and attack. Order them to move away and repeat (good for organising flank attacks).
Battles can get so big you don't want to be in the chaos and blind to what is happening else where. Great guide I shall use the advance option much more!

Try and mimic drawing a bow. then turn to your upper body to the left, your range of motion allows you to aim behind yourself. then try to do the same thing to the right. This is why horse archers wanna circle counter clock wise. super cool that this is a feature.

Party is usually 60-70% melee cav, to 40-30% archer cav. Buy merc cav to fill in until i can replace with proper heavy cav. Then only keep merc to fill in for the dead after i have my desired lineup. Then i get some dime-a-dozen steppe nomads and train in mass. After one level up im good to go.
With 100-130 troops i can face 300-360, or up to 430 if they are mostly tier 1.
All follow until resonably close then let archer cav break off and attack on their own. Melee cav i try to keep a much close eye on. When the enemy lines their archers up (and that line extends beyond infantry cluster) i direct melee cav to a point past the line, so that they ride through the archers but not the infantry. I then have them break off, get some distance and wait for the lines to reform. Then repeat.
Only after the infantry try to charge, retreat (do to archers dieing and thus low moral) or have broken up somehow, do my melee cav get let loose with no further orders needed, though sometimes i break them off and give them some distance so they can have one last proper charge on those fleeing.
Also sometimes preffer two handed axes for occasional double kills because they can swing through mutiple enemies where as 2h swords cannot.

Whenever I tell my archers to advance, they actually run away. At first I thought they might be backing up to get to max range, but they back up and just stand there, not shooting their bows. I've found that telling your archers to charge is the way to go if you want to go aggressive, or place them somewhere where they have a clear LoS and high ground if you can manage it. The biggest difference I've noticed between charge and advance is that if you tell a unit to charge, they will charge, obviously, and they will chase fleeing enemies. If you tell a unit to advance, they will charge and fight until they've won, but they won't chase fleeing enemies. I just wanted to put my experience out there in case anyone else noticed the same thing. The idea of the unit numbers (1-8) being AI profiles is cool but I don't think it's implemented yet. I have my heavy Infantry set to group one and my light infantry/skirmisher set to group two because they spawn front and center and those are the two units I want to set up first. I actually have my archers set to group four (horse archers) so they spawn out wide and have a good angle to shoot from although I have moved them from group to group to find the best spawn point for them and I have yet to see the group number have any effect on how they act/fight. Same goes for the rest of my units as well. It would be super cool if they implement the AI profile thing you talked about.

If you like prolonged battles and tactics, try a battle of over 1k on each side but limiting the battlefield to 400-500 total. Heres what ive noticed with these settings: Reinforcements changes the complexity of the engagement. Horse archers and archers loses alot of its early advantage because ammo becomes a factor. Mass rout is hardly a factor. Attacks and counter attacks numerous times throughout an engagement. Ive had battles last over 30 minutes, and ive noticed the AI is at its best where you are not guaranteed a win on an even matchup. I dont recommend this setting on large sieges though. Just a friendly warning, even if you win you will be shocked at your losses.

I saw in one of your videos that you recommended not being on horseback but leveling up the athletics and move in with the infantry. I'm curious, how would you do these orders based on that? For instance, with the Cav, would you set them to advance as well? Would they work to go around the Infantry to attack the cavalry? If that's the case, should I want my Cav set to have them focus on the enemy Cav? How does the infantry work when set to follow?

So in open ground large battles the Follow Me command makes the troops who are following you switch to the same weapon type if needed.
BUT what if you are raiding a Bandit Camp? I usually go in hoping I get all archers beside me but I use a one handed Mace and a Shield to protect my troops from Arrows and hopefully knock future prisoners unconcious. They luckily do not seem to try to switch to melee weapons in that case!

I find that having my archer line in the Advance stance isn't great. I need to carefully position my forces in order to effectively take on the much larger forces I'm constantly fighting. I find I can get maximum effect from my archers simply by positioning them well and leaving them there to shoot. Advance sends them out of position where my infantry can't properly protect them, and they can't continuously shoot into the hordes I face. I will experiment more with the use of Advance on Infantry and Cavalry though. Thanks!

  • @Kishandreth

I cannot stress how important it is to have both horse archers and foot archers. The AI tends to get stuck targeting one or the other (priority target) and the other group shoots the armies in the back. I was running with a high percent of horse archers but my foot archers were getting more kills. Not sure if the AI was targeting the biggest group (40% horse archers) and ignoring the smaller group (30% foot archers) or if it was because horse archers are a higher priority.
I've seen 200+ kills with 0 deaths as the AI runs around in circles chasing horse archers. My Foot archers had over 120 kills.

@@flyingdutchman9053 fians are great. I'm just Imperial scum. The ability to decide between palatine Guards and Bucellarii at the end of the leveling makes it too easy. Usually I don't even bother with Palantine guards unless a big fight is coming my way, instead leaving the archers ready to level when I get warhorses. Warhorses are annoying to get enough of. I've probably upgraded 350 Bucellarii this playthrough and about 200 of those were traded to companions for new trainees.

Just says this is no more working as said in the video. Currently it's always better to use charge for all unit except archer (better to positioning manually). If using advance units will just advance and idle in front on enemy. You can use advance for moving army but always call charge when getting on contact.

  • @lamebubblesflysohigh

The best tactic of all is to not use any of these commands whatsoever on your infantry and make them do a shield wall right where they spawn and order archers to stand apart some distance behind melee shield wall. The reinforcement mechanic in this game is so stupid that if you can crush the first initial wave, the rest of their army will span in batches of 15 (or is it 20) on the other side of the map and literally trickle to your side while your reinforcements will be spawned right there. The AI simply cannot win.

I'm actually saying CAV-AL-RY. It just sounds like "Calvary" because of how fast I speak and the fact that my rhotic speech tends to blur that "L." When I say it very slow, and deliberately, it's quite clearly "Cavalry" but when I say it in my standard, conversational tone, it has that effect. I've been covering Total War games for years and this is a comment I field just about every time I use the world "Cavalry, hence why i typically say "Cav" to avoid the confusion. Sorry for any discomfort that put you through, i KNOW it's something I try to really focus on over-pronouncing just make sure people know I'm not referring to the location :)

Recruit troops and donate them to your faction castle and cities gives you good relationships and influence.
