This video made me realize how horrifically terrifying being an airman would be in these types of wars. People often think about how scary being in a plane crash would be, but these men saw, and experienced hundreds of plane crashes in a few days. The amount of absolute Chad like balls you'd have to have to fly in this situation is immeasurable.
Groundwar still sucks for the infantry
@@destroyerarmor2846 OH! For sure, no doubt dude! I was in the US Army, and often thought about how I would react in a firefight (I never got deployed but I heard very detailed stories, and videos ect.) I was just saying people don't often put themselves in the mindset of flying a plane in a battle zone (at least I never really thought about it). The few seconds between your plane getting hit, and you hitting the ground has to be the scariest feeling imaginable. Just knowing you're going to die with nothing you can do to save yourself.
Still a lot better than infantry (especially soviet infantry), or tank crews. Especially for fighter pilots, where your skill can significantly affect the outcome. Artillery was probably safer. but not by much.

There is a classic game of that name (Forgetten Battles) where you get to fly the IL-2 Sturmovik plus many other WWII planes.
Stukas by large didn't "trade their bombs for 37mm cannons". Those cannons were only used by limited numbers of very experienced pilots, due to their ineffectiveness and heavy drag, which made those Stukas sitting ducks.
@abis9 alpha9 That would only work if soldiers were densely packed like marching in a tight column, which would disperse immediately if a plan dived at them. The most effective anti-infantry weapon would be aerial bursting rockets loaded with shrapnel. You'd have to saturate the area because infantry is not huddled together but are spread out and taking cover in trenches/foxholes or under armored vehicles.
@abis9 alpha9 It would be like a hand grenade exploding on the ground. So no, having machine guns and regular cannons (HE shells for which also have the compatible effect) is better.
Hans Ulrich Rudel was one of those experienced fighters that used 37mm cannons under his wings to fire wolframium-core bullets to tanks, which ended up being highly effective.

@@unkind_grape9077 maybe not wrong so much as incomplete, but to be fair, history is such a vast field of study its impossible to sufficiently cover everything in the time most schools have, so they teach what they hope the (often disinterested) students could hopefully remember. You also figure most history teachers in public schools probably did not specialize in history as their focus of study, since education degrees often require a much broader field of subjects. I think the big thing teachers should do is teach kids in a way that they want to go and learn more, since that's really the key to teaching at any education level
@@jeffreypeters2803 no the thing is most country’s curriculum for history education is wrong especially WW2 Europe half the information about nazi Germany is wrong the only reason why Germany truly started the war was because of the treaty of versailles they lost most of their agricultural land they could not feed most of their people and so on and with Germany being an already poor country the treaty also economically ruined them to a point the Jews held more money than the country it’s self

One interesting innovation Souviet aviation used during the Battle of Kursk was PTAB - Anti-Tank Aviation Bomb. It was very small bomb, of only 2,5kg in weight, which used cumulative charge to penetrate the armor from above. IL-2 could take as much as 4 containers of 48 PTABs each, they were also used by bombers and fighters. PTABs were dropped massively and covered quite large area; hitting a tank with one bomb was usually sufficient to take it out. By the end of the war over 14 millons of PTABs were produced.

@@elmascapo6588 Battle of Moscow was won without US help. Germany didn't have the logistics and resources to win against the soviet union; Most of the lend-lease was trucks and food, which made the soviet offensives much more efficient, but it would still win the war. What I find funny about the battle of Kursk is the Soviet equipment losses are much more than what they threw into the battle. Because unlike the Germans who recorded losses as in the vehicle completely wiped out of existence, the Soviet just put down any damaged machines as a loss, then they repaired it and put it back in action, then if it get damaged again they would consider it as another loss.
I read somewhere, that even if a tank got stuck in the mud it counted as a loss to the soviets because it didn't arrive to the assault in time.
@@ДмитроПрищепа-д3яYeah it make sense. The Soviet were much more concerned about the ability to fight of their machines on a daily basis, so if any equipment does not available the next day, it would be count as a loss.

When an American tells you that D-day is the most important battle of ww2.
it wasn't the most important battle but it was important
Would have been better if the Germans had been succesful at Kursk.
