gotta love that no matter where you are in galaxy land. or in areas outside of galaxy lands entrances.. you can always hear the "mighty" roar of the mindbender when its in action :)
minion986 yup, then hear screaming. the ride is SUPER scary to me, but my brother went on it 16 times in 2 days. i visited WEM for the summer...and The Mindbender was my first rollercoaster I've ever been on. lol im so crazy
For anyone wondering where exactly the train last crashed in the accident seen in the documentary footage, it is at the yellow pillar to the left of the train, at exactly 2:11, also seen at 0:50 and the last pillar to the right of the train at 4:08. The train did the loop after that but didn't have enough speed to complete it, stalled at the top of the loop for 20 minutes and then rolled back and hit the pillar. But from what I've heard the people were rescued before the car rolled back. The people in the last (4th) car however were thrown off the car sometime between the second and third loop, since the safety thing to hold on to of that car opened after the second loop, as well as the wheels broke and it derailed from the track. The other 3 cars on the front pulled it along with them throughout the track though, making it bounce like a fish tail and hit the structures. 3 of the 4 people on the last car died. Must have been horrible to see :(
Are you sure the timestamps are correct? The only thing that confuses me is that records say the passengers fell roughly 25 feet but this looks way too low. Nonetheless, it was still a tragic accident all around.
It's not just the speed or G's. It's the noise. It's LOUD. And there's tons of beams and supports flying very closely past the cars. It's a pretty intense experience. Love it.
When I visited WEM years ago, I rode this thing about 10 times in a day. It is incredibly intense, the g-forces are tremendous. It's a really fun ride, but it's not very smooth. If anyone is planning on riding it, make sure to keep your head back against the headrest as firmly as possible otherwise your head will be snapping back and forth and it will hurt your ears. Also be aware that they use the most absurd restraints I've ever seen, at least they did at that time, where instead of having the restraint flip down forwards over you, it is some sort of contraption that clicks down into place, but it doesn't lock. So the g-forces of the ride force it down onto you as you ride and by the end it's pushing down on your shoulders and it can be quite uncomfortable and painful. After a while, I just started folding up my hoodie and putting it on my shoulders as padding.
I feel like given how old this coaster actually is, I think it was built during a time where Schwarzkopf was still hand bending track. Don’t quote me on it, but it seems like it could line up. Now a days coasters are designed on the computer to create the most smooth ride, and most, if not all coasters use heart lining to keep the ride super smooth. The over shoulder restraints are obvs out dated styles, and even just upgrading the cars to modern ones could improve the ride so much.
The Mindbender of Galaxyland and the fire breathing Dragon at Scotiabank Theatre were two things that made my childhood growing up in Edmonton. First the Dragon ceased operation in 2010, and removed in 2014. And now tragically the Mindbender closed in 2020-21, and is now being removed in 2023. Everything's changed at WEM... And clearly not for the better. I'm probably not gonna be visiting WEM as much anymore I'm afraid. It's just way too many emotional memories for me
I'm taking my friend on this in December for her birthday. She promised she will go on with me because she chickened out last time... (she's terrified of roller coasters...) Before we leave, I'm actually tempted to put a screw in my pocket .. then when we get to the very top of the ride, I'll pull it out and say 'where the hell did this come from?" 😂
Vitor Santana Ricci I didn't like it because of how shaky it is, I'll probably never go on it ever again. It's hands down the shakiest ride I've ever been on (haven't been on many roller coasters, and I'm only 11)
Been on this every year since it re-opened in 1987. Great ride, really like no other with the track arrangement which has such sweeping curves and the intense G forces. But riding backwards on the blue train was a really different experience. Everyone needs to try it!
I rode this in the 80s and it was spectacular. The trains were longer back then, and there was no backwards option. I think the original trains had headlights, one train was blue and the other was a dark brownish red. I would usually ride Mindbender 12 to 18 times per visit. Mindbender set the standard in my mind. Long before hyper coasters, this one had maximum intensity, speed, g-forces, and a high satisfaction level in general. Unlike similar models that were usually always outdoors, Mindbender seemed to pack a heavier punch and I assumed it was because of the track being less oxidized in a climate controlled hangar - let alone the fact that it was never assembled and disassembled for the travel circuit lile some of Mindbender's popular cousins. I blacked out once in the third loop. I was tilting my head forward for a more extreme experience and I blacked right out! I love Mindbender at WEM and I happy that it is well preserved safely indoors in one of the coldest places on Earth. Anton Schwarzkopf designed and built so many great looping coasters that pack a punch in terms of speed and velocity. I could be wrong but originally I don't think there were any brake runs until the end of the ride. This ride is one of the best coasters in Canada and is also one of the oldest as well.
You are absolutely correct. The Mindbender was essentially in a 'museum' environment, never seeing rain, snow, high winds, ocean/salt air, extremes of heat or cold... and they killed it.
I got a friend who works at galaxyland he says most of the equipment is outdated and everything needs maintenance but he says the Mindbender is the only ride they pay really close attention to
Couple tips if you're gonna go on this ride. 1. Sit on the left side. The 90-degree helix at the end makes it manageable to sit on the right side, but it's a much more enjoyable experience to basically be sideways on the huge drop. 2. Jam your knees into the padding on the coaster and keep your head glued to the back. Your neck is gonna hurt like crazy on the third loop if you don't do that (even though the forces on the third loop pull your head off the seat anyway) 3. Do what you can to sit in the front seat. I've rode in every seat, front is by far the best.
Just the fact of knowing that the ride crashed in 1986 gives riders a thrill. I went to the mall in Aug of 2013. Couldn't ride it since it was being worked on. But one day I hope to go back to get over my fear of riding it :)
I've only ridden this coaster a handful of times, but I love it -- though my vision goes partially black through the second loop every time. Gotta love a high-intensity coaster!
Sad news for those who wish to ride this. On Jan.30,2023 West Edmonton Mall announced that the Mindbender is now being decomission and has officially shut down. R.I.P. to the king of Galaxyland and an icon of West Edmonton Mall.. ☹️

Where did you even come from and why are you even talking about people being fat in the first place? Every time I would visit Edmonton it was a must see attraction to come to WEM and watch Mindbender. I had spent hours watching it. I especially enjoyed standing on the walkway that passes through two of the loops. I almost got up the nerve to try it, but always chickened out. One of my regrets in life. Now I am too old and too big to fit comfortably in one of the cars. Oh well. It still was fun to watch 😮

Yeah, the mindbender is great, just sucks how the over-shoulder restraint doesn't have an handles as that's the first place I want to grab when riding a coaster haha.
The ride is great, but there are a few things people need to realize before they go on. First of all KEEP YOUR HEAD AS FAR BACK AS POSSIBLE AT ALL TIMES. Lol but I was called a chicken by my brother even though he hasn't go on the mind bender himself. So i went on it out of courage and bravery and I did not scream scream at a- Well I wish I could say that but no I went on because I hate being called a chicken and I screamed and cursed so much it was not pleasant. Lol after I came off the ride I was pale as snow and clammy as hell. It took me like 2 days to get over the feeling of accomplishment that I rode the mind bender before anyone else in my family. It was literally the best ride ever and such a rush!
I was in Edmonton in the early 90s when this was relatively new. It was the first of these big ones that I had ever seen. It scared the crap out of me just watching it! lol.
my hat flew off. I did not expect that. Thankfully one of the workers seen it and returned it to me. I was around sixteen, and knew it was about to fly off but couldnt take the time to let go of the shoulder bar and pull my hat off, haha
I love this roller coaster! The first time I rode it I passed out, but now my friends and I ride it over and over. Its pretty crazy backwards because you never know what's coming. Whenever I ride it, it isn't the intensity that gets to me but the roughness of the loops and helix.
+Marquis I hate when people talk about the accident. Yeah, it happened, but it's over with. The ride has a lot of improvements. Just leave it be already. 🤐
The accident was in 1986 that was almost 30 years ago the reason for the accident was the computers weren't able to detect the error but now we have stuff like that now so you don't need to worry
+Dallin Law as far as I know the accident happened due to a translation error in the maintenance manual from German to English which caused the accident.
its in a small space kind of it looks alot bigger when your there i live in edmonton so yah and too all the people that say its crammed its in alot bigger space than it looks cammras make drops look smaller so why not the size and space!!!!!!
**coasterplus Ask the people who built it why it has so many left turns....... I have been on the Mind Bender many times and it is a rush every time:) Many people love it because of the challenge and of it`s size. Others hate it and you could not pay them to get on it because of it`s size and history.
EthanVlogs ! Actually it's not the largest indoor water park anymore :( there is one in Japan that is bigger. I'm pretty sure the mall itself is still the largest mall; in North America at least.
Went on the Mindbender Coaster twice. I literally lost my Function to walk Afterwards due to the Speed. As well went on the Zipper for the first time I almost Hurled. I ran to the Men's room as fast as I can. Fortunate. Nothing Happened. But it could've gone Differently
i almost passed out riding this today because my head kept snapping forward during the loops and i couldn’t pull it back. also that third loop is gnarly lol
Im beginning to notice a pattern with many indoor roller coasters like this, following a limited-space plan by limiting a certain turn direction to a very small number, and sharpening the other turn direction for more space to build the ride
hongpham67 ruclips.net/video/EIKtQX89HQo/видео.html Many many many safety provisions have been installed. Anyone who is scared, needs to watch and understand what went wrong, and how they fixed it, and the new precautions in place.
almost, the first two loops are less so than the third by a good degree. Third loop track section just before entering the bend is briefly almost completely flat horizontally. Wile the exiting bend is 100% gravity slingshotting you out as the section of track after IS completely flat in terms of horizon. That being said it's still not a perfect circle, only a few degrees off though! However the right hand rail out of the third loop flat section does rise. Adding a light dihedral and the trajectory also turns slightly left in banking preparation for next transition upward-left.
Yes we even have a full sized water park and theater with 800 ish stores and services along with a full scale ship with manmade lake thing inside the mall it's not small I go there every week or so only for tim Hortons it's close so yeah
You fix what made it unsafe in the first place and keep it running. If you fall down a set of stairs with no railing, do you add a railing or demolish the stairs?
my favourite ride. the first drop is always the most intense. i'm fairly good for not blacking out on it. unless i'm in the backwards car, then shit fades out on one of the loops. sooo different riding it backwards, and sooo worth it. if i'm not wrong, u experience more g's riding backwards
theres a math formula to explain it all but i hate math 🤣so i'll just say nah it's the same g force ether direction you face BUT being backwards means that math formula is reversed also in the angular department.... aaaaaall about those angles i tell ya! 🤣😁
I love this ride. went on it like 4 times in a row. the creepy thing is the first time I went on it I was in the cart that crashed and I was sitting in the spot where the only person survived
this is the only coaster ive been on outside of england and its the most intense ride ever perfectly named as after first ride i could barly stand straight the video dosnt do justice just as too how intense it is
Wow!! I like to watch videos about Roller coasters. In Top5central, I saw this was the DEADLIEST roller coasters. They usually just change it over & over again, but this looks like its it!!!
Think this has been the best indoor coaster seen (so far). Just thinking about the indoor ones in SFGA makes me think something like this would have been much more "fitting." But IDK could be wrong then again just a wild thought/opinion.
***** i spent like maybe an hour going on all the different bridges twice, the rope thing was awesome. Did you go in the fun house? The last part was like vertigo
+Riley Cardinal I went on this yesterday and it was the best ride ever! It was not nearly as scary as I expected and you don't even get the "butterflies". Highly recommend this.
I went to Edmonton but when I went I was 10 and I had never rode an actual roller coaster before so I didn't ride this one. Should I ride next time I go?

6.5, and yes it can, I only lost my vision once though and never lost consciousness
Like a G -6 lika lika G6!
Allison Yount -.-
:)
Allison Yount *facepalm*
This looks sick!
After 20 times you will feel sick
this looks like so much fun!
Riding this 12 times in total, Its probably the most solid coaster I've ever been on. You don't get any of that jerky motion you get on some others.
Cool. The Mindbender has been featured on this channel. I have ridden this roller coaster more than any other.
not sure if I would be able to go on this one after the incident that killed 3 people...
It's highly unlikely you would ever die in a roller coaster accident.
The accident was in 1986 that was almost 30 years ago the reason for the accident was the computers weren't able to detect the error but now we have stuff like that now so you don't need to worry
In the 80s... Mellow dramatic kids these days, go snapchat some food or something.
+Dallin Law as far as I know the accident happened due to a translation error in the maintenance manual from German to English which caused the accident.
Its really safe now i been on it so many times so mu n funn 👍🏻
I can not believe you rode this after the accident that it had. It is extremely terrifying to see the accident occur.
Can you actually choose to ride it facing backwards??
Yup
They used to I am not to sure if they do anymore
Yeah you still can.
coolcoke4353 I would never have the balls to do that
Ashton Snelgrove agreed
Yes. I lived there for like 3 or 4 years. Amazing theme park this mall has.
Just another reason I want to move to Canada... but why does it have so many left turns?
its in a small space kind of it looks alot bigger when your there i live in edmonton so yah and too all the people that say its crammed its in alot bigger space than it looks cammras make drops look smaller so why not the size and space!!!!!!
**coasterplus Ask the people who built it why it has so many left turns.......
I have been on the Mind Bender many times and it is a rush every time:)
Many people love it because of the challenge and of it`s size. Others hate it and you could not pay them to get on it because of it`s size and history.
Since it's an indoor roller coaster, there's not a lot of space so they need to put as much track possible in a little area
Kathy Poulitsis who cares about the history people just don't think sometimes
Space Mountain Disneyland makes tons of right turns with an occasional left.
People die in car crashes every single day but we don't let it stop us from riding in cars. Can't live in fear. Looks like one amazing ride!
Looks like you have pretty cool mall in Edmonton! I should go visit!
Yes I live in Edmonton it's a sweet place the place is west Edmonton mall galixey land
another place in west ed you should checkout is the waterpark.(largest indoor waterpark in the world)
Yeah I saw the waterpark too. That's also why I said that after seing that you also have the roller coaster. Which is insane!
EthanVlogs ! Actually it's not the largest indoor water park anymore :( there is one in Japan that is bigger. I'm pretty sure the mall itself is still the largest mall; in North America at least.
awe that sucks:(
I remember the first time I went on the mindbender. My friend was too chicken to go, so I went all alone when I was twelve years old. It ROCKS!
Went on the Mindbender Coaster twice. I literally lost my Function to walk Afterwards due to the Speed. As well went on the Zipper for the first time I almost Hurled. I ran to the Men's room as fast as I can. Fortunate. Nothing Happened. But it could've gone Differently
Nice the zipper seemed to enclosed for me, but i did like the roller coaster ride
i almost passed out riding this today because my head kept snapping forward during the loops and i couldn’t pull it back.
also that third loop is gnarly lol
Hell no ain't going on the Deathride. I am staying on the Orbiter ride.
Lol
Too many bad things on this ride. Have you been on it?
+DemonzRage The incident that happened on this ride was about 30 years ago. it has had no issues since then.
+crazydud619dx up regular safety checks a couple times a day. Over the shoulder restraints and seatbelts
From what I've seen, the cart got stuck on the track. Theres a video on RUclips showing it.
Im beginning to notice a pattern with many indoor roller coasters like this, following a limited-space plan by limiting a certain turn direction to a very small number, and sharpening the other turn direction for more space to build the ride
I remember hearing many years back that thing came off the tracks and killed everyone in the last car.
It only killed 3 out of the 4 people in the last car.
R.I.P
Is really safe now since the incident? R.I.P the 3.
No one cared about safety as much as they do now
One survived, but a woman and two men (including the survivors brother) were killed

Many many many safety provisions have been installed. Anyone who is scared, needs to watch and understand what went wrong, and how they fixed it, and the new precautions in place.
Whats cool is that they kept this open even after the fatal accident . I love this ride.
The accident happened in 1987 so it is wayyy safer now. The chances of it happening a gain are extremely tiny.
+Steven turner
You mean 0?
Amelia Taylor The chances of dying while reading this post is not 0, so no.
Jason Little alright you win
Amelia Taylor Hope I wasn't mean or condecending, just having fun
RIP
Very impressive camera work.
Look at 2:19 she says woo Nice hair line
Actually, she says "nice air time"..
roasted.. clearly you haven't ridden the ride Pvp gamer
+Davin Drachenberg who
talking to Pvp gamer
+Davin Drachenberg ok
That's amazing how smooth it is, and are those perfectly circle loops?
almost, the first two loops are less so than the third by a good degree.
That's in a mall!!!!!
The largest mall in the world it even got a pool!!
It's not the largest mall.
+Zak Bouzaid it's about the 10th largest in the world used to be largest until 2004
Yes we even have a full sized water park and theater with 800 ish stores and services along with a full scale ship with manmade lake thing inside the mall it's not small I go there every week or so only for tim Hortons it's close so yeah
yup
West Ed in Edmonton AB, canada
Oh that looks like so much fun! sucks that I live so far away from Edmonton :/
I went on this ride yesterday, it's pretty fun I have motion sickness but it was totally worth it best roller coaster yet :P
Did you know that there was an accident this mindbender in the 1980s
Yep
Love this ride! Been on soo many times
this is the only coaster ive been on outside of england and its the most intense ride ever perfectly named as after first ride i could barly stand straight the video dosnt do justice just as too how intense it is
damn that ride is a killer
🤣This GUY!🤣
I watched with the video's sound muted and Pendulum playing instead. Was badass!
omg lmao
Wow!! I like to watch videos about Roller coasters. In Top5central, I saw this was the DEADLIEST roller coasters. They usually just change it over & over again, but this looks like its it!!!
Think this has been the best indoor coaster seen (so far). Just thinking about the indoor ones in SFGA makes me think something like this would have been much more "fitting." But IDK could be wrong then again just a wild thought/opinion.
that goes fast through those loops, looks fun.
I'm lucky enough to live in Edm, and get to ride this beast once a week. It'll straighten out any kinks you got that's for sure.
so this ride doesn’t use a chain lift? sorry for being a gp
I am from the UK so have never experienced this for myself. Looks great fun! What's it like?
It's called the Mindbender for a reason, XD
Fucking made me dizzy for 1 hour
It looks similar to Flamingo Land's old Magnum Force, if you ever rode that.
It's intense :')
I used to go on this as a kid all the time...the cars look totally different now lol
This was. Extremely loud and terrifying
That is the most 90's color scheme on a ride I've ever seen
I love this ride, I've been on it several times!!!
I went on this so many times, 3 times by myself. It was so awesome!
I went on it ten times
Beynon Jonas nice
***** ultimate badass over here ^^^
***** i spent like maybe an hour going on all the different bridges twice, the rope thing was awesome. Did you go in the fun house? The last part was like vertigo
should i ride this if i go to canada ill will go on this if its safe now and doesnt cause that much injuries
This is my favourite indoor coaster
It looks like something I would build in Roller Coaster Tycoon, and then the guests wouldn't ride it because it was "too intense"for them.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
My mom went on this ride when we went to Edomonton! Kaylee is posting this
Holy crap. on one of them you have the choice to go backwards !!!
was a coool experience. yaaa, another reason to move in Canada
Looks like a lot of fun. I'm going on this in 2 days
How was it
+Riley Cardinal I went on this yesterday and it was the best ride ever! It was not nearly as scary as I expected and you don't even get the "butterflies".
Highly recommend this.
+SEANJBLOX I get butterflies on the first drop, but I love it. On all of the other drops, I can't feel anything ... It's great :D
This is a very cool Roller Coaster. BTW - Its "West Edmonton Mall" not "Edmonton Mall" Keep up the great work.
I went to Edmonton but when I went I was 10 and I had never rode an actual roller coaster before so I didn't ride this one. Should I ride next time I go?
I live here in Edmonton and I have not yet gone on it. Weird I know. It is pretty sweet tho!
