  • This is round 2 of the Rigoletto/Sparafucile duet sing-off. Let me know who wins in the comments. If you haven’t heard these singers, then you are in for a treat. I give the bass an extra few seconds at the end since he ends the duet on a low F.
Giuseppe Taddei was one of the greatest Verdi baritones of the 20th century. He was also know for buffo roles and sang into his 80s. Taddei was famous for the role of “Falstaff”, and he recorded the role several times. Giulio Neri was a magnificent bass who unfortunately died of heart failure when he was 49. You can hear Neri on a complete recording of Boito’s “Mefistofele.”
Ettore Bastianini was another great Verdi baritone of the 20th century. He was primarily known for Verdi operas and Verismo operas, but he also sang Russian operas in Italian. Sadly, Bastianini died from throat cancer when he was just 44. Ivo Vinco starred in the Zeffirelli production of “La Boheme” as Colline under Herbert Von Karajan. Vinco was married to the famous mezzo soprano, Fiorenzo Cosotto, whom I will talk about later.
