I know Furlanetto has done plenty of main roles, but if there is a Gary Oldman-esque greatest character actor in opera, he would be on my short list for the title. He vanishes into roles like this, Basilio, Leporello, etc. and imbues them with incredible depth and personality. Here he plays what generally comes across as a wooden, 2-dimensional plot device as a genuine lunatic with undercurrents of dignity and comedy. His attempts to be charming or ingratiating are hilariously off the mark. In the third act he even manages to imbue some humanity when his sister is begging him not to kill the duke ("Ancor' c'e mezz'ora") and he convincingly emotes inner struggle and concern for his sister through the garish makeup. There are so many great touches in this scene: the renaissance gypsy costume, the way they intro him emerging from the shadows, the way he clings to the gate like a woodpecker and leers at Rigoletto in an attempt to be charming, his dagger flourish and unhinged delivery of "Vi serve?!" and perhaps the best part is his look of utter offense when rebuffed (along with the fitting Italian hand gesture). For my money there isn't a more memorable portrayal of Sparafucile from a total acting-singing perspective. People can debate low Fs all day, but from the moment I first saw this, this IS the character.

He is really great but to say he is the best is a bold statement. I agree that he is among the best but i wouldnt say he is the best.

the best description for the character of Sparafucile: "he's like a mafia guy- he comes in with this very friendly tune, all like *cue bad sicilian accent* "hello, my friend, you have a problem, we can sort it ouy easily!"

Típico que andas re tranqui por la calle y se te acerca un sicario a ver si querés que te mate a alguien. A quien no le pasó?
Mentira, amo este área, pero siempre me hace reír pensar en ello 🤣

@ Alberto: I agree--I cannot listen to Domingo sing Rigoletto, it hurts my ears.

Questo e una vera interpretazione, non come la de il Divo Domingo, un basso cantato per un Baritono e un tenore alla interpretazione de Rigoletto.
