O Monumento from (La Gioconda) with Apollo Granforte.
Apollo Granforte singing "O Monumento" from (La Gioconda). As you will hear, Apollo Granforte was undoubtedly a Verdi baritone and his last name describes his voice quite accurately. He had a really powerful voice
which resembled the great Titta Ruffo. Granforte recorded both Scarpia in “Tosca” and Conte Di Luna in “Il Trovatore.” I highly recommend both recordings. Also, there is video footage of Granforte singing “Largo al Factotum.”

Before your facade of marble and gold

Tamara Sinyavskaya-Olga’s Aria-Eugene Onegin
Просмотров 2003 года назад
Tamara Sinyavskaya is a Russian mezzo who I was not familiar with until I found this “Eugene Onegin” on vinyl conducted by Rostropovich. I should have known more about this singer, since she sang at the Bolshoi for many years and was awarded People's Artist of the USSR. In addition she was married to the famous Russian singer Muslim Magometovich Magomayev, who was dubbed the Russian Sinatra. I ...
Nicolai Ghiaurov-Скорби душа-Skorbi Dusha-Борис Годунов-Boris Godunov
Просмотров 2653 года назад
Nicolai Ghiaurov was one of the finest interpreters of the role of Boris Godunov in my opinion. In this excerpt you will hear Boris’s coronation, which takes place in the prologue of Mussorgsky’s opera “Boris Godunov.” Ghiaurov had an extensive repertoire, and he is one of the most recorded basses in history. I hope you enjoy his singing if you have not heard him before. Please subscribe if you...
Maria Callas-L’altra notte in fonda al mare-Mefistofele
Просмотров 1903 года назад
The opera “Mefistofele” was written by Arrigo Boito. Boito was best known as the librettist of Verdi’s last two operas, and also the revised version of “Simon Boccanegra.” Boito was also a composer, and “Mefistofele” was his most famous opera. At this point in the opera, Margherita is in prison for poisoning her mother and killing her illegitimate baby, so in this wonderful aria, she sings abou...
Mirella Freni-Come in quest'ora bruna-Simon Boccanegra
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.3 года назад
Mirella Freni was one of the greatest sopranos of the second half of the 20th century. She started out singing lighter roles such as Nanetta in “Falstaff”, then later in her career she sang heavier repertoire. She not only had a gorgeous voice, but she used her voice very wisely, and therefore enjoyed a very long career. Freni was married to the great bass, Nicolai Ghiaurov. The couple performe...
Francesco Tamagno (the original Otello)- Otello
Просмотров 1983 года назад
Francesco Tamagno (1850-1905) is most famous for creating the title role in Verdi’s “Otello” at the premiere in 1887. In addition, Tamagno also sang in the premiere of the revised version of “Simon Boccanegra” as Gabrielle Adorno, and in the four act version of “Don Carlo” as the title character. In this recording you will hear Tamagno sing three excerpts from “Otello.” Since he only recorded b...
Tebaldi and Del Monaco-Gia nella notte densa-Otello
Просмотров 4183 года назад
I hope you enjoy this wonderful duet from “Otello.” I am posting the English libretto below in case you want to follow along. The music is by Giuseppe Verdi and the libretto is by Arrigo Boito. An interesting fact is that the Italian conductor, Arturo Toscanini played in the cello section in the premiere of “Otello.” According to Wayne Conner, Giuseppe Verdi himself told Toscanini to play loude...
Sherrill Milnes-Resta Immobile-Guglielmo Tell
Просмотров 3683 года назад
The next singer I am including in my Verdi baritones play list is Sherrill Milnes. Milnes was a leading baritone at the Met in the 1970s and 1980s who specialized in mostly Verdi operas. Therefore, he was a Verdi baritone, and when he was young he had an excellent upper range. At the end of this aria, Milnes takes a high B flat in the cadenza which is very impressive. In this aria William Tell ...
Maria Callas vs Renata Tebaldi-La Mamma Morta-Andrea Chenier
Просмотров 6163 года назад
Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi were rivals during their singing careers. I thought it would be fun to compare the two artists on arias which they were both famous for. This video starts with a preview, then you will hear both singers sing the entire aria. I hope you enjoy these two wonderful renditions of “La Mamma Morta.” Please let me know which singer you like better in the comments. A tran...
Pavel Lisitsian-Si Puo-Pagliacci-Sung in Russian
Просмотров 2493 года назад
The next singer in my Verdi baritone series is Pavel Lisitsian. Lisitsian mainly sang in Russia, so perhaps he is not as well known as he should be. I have seen other opera lovers on RUclips refer to Lisitsian as the “Russian Leonard Warren.” Both Warren and Lisitsian had amazing high notes, so I think that is a good description. In Russian the high A flat at the end of this aria is on an u vow...
Dame Joan Sutherland-Regnavo Nel Silenzio-Lucia di Lammermoor
Просмотров 2323 года назад
This excerpt is from Sutherland’s early recording of “Lucia di Lammermoor” conducted by John Pritchard. Lucia was one of Sutherland’s finest roles. She performed the role at the Met on many occasions. I have included the cabaletta since the aria/cabaletta form was custom when this opera was written.
Nicolai Ghiaurov-Il Lacerato Spirito
Просмотров 1723 года назад
Nicolai Ghiaurov was well known for his Verdi interpretations. His two most famous Verdi roles in my opinion are King Philip in “Don Carlo” and Fiesco in “Simon Boccanegra.” In this aria Fiesco is grieving the loss of his daughter Maria. This excerpt is from the recording of "Simon Boccanegra" with Claudio Abbado conducting. The rest of the cast includes Mirella Freni, Jose Carreras, Piero Capp...
Enrico Caruso-Bella figlia dell’amore-1908 and 1917
Просмотров 2753 года назад
Please see my video of this quartet from last week for subtitles. Enrico Caruso made his Met debut as Il Duca in “Rigoletto” in 1903. Interestingly, Caruso recorded the quartet in both 1908 and 1917. Later in his career, Caruso’s voice took on more of a baritonal quality. I wanted to show how his voice changed from 1908 to 1917, so I am posting the two recordings side by side in this post. You ...

It is amazing how much darker in color Caruso's second recording is. It is obvious that the three packs of Egyptian Prettys a day plus cigars has had an effect on his voice, and his breathing. Although his voice sounds more powerful in the second recording. In some of his recordings from 1920 he sounds almost as if he is gasping for air...

Callas studied her art all her life, was devoted to it and was by far the best of all in her era and ever since. No-one does the finale of this aria like Callas either. Cerquetti was primarily a musician of other instruments and only studied vocally for a year. Nevertheless, Cerquetti stood in for Callas in Norma when she was not well enough to perform; as she was already playing the role in Naples. However, the stamina required to travel between the two cities and sing proved too much for Cerquetti and she retired at the unbelievably young age for an opera singer, of 31. A very short career but what a tremendous voice Cerquetti had and we are very fortunate to have these recordings. Callas obviously is in another dimension entirely in acting and singing but Cerquetti is superb and infinitely better than any soprano we see on stage these days.

@@user-ry9zf5fp4v Ettore had a life with no father, no father figure... it was extremely tragic and non confident from any view of psychological or social points. Mario Callas and Mario plus a lot others gave Ettore affirmation and confidence. Mario had been extremely helpful and loving to his brother Ettore. Though there were not a lot of recordings for some reason. I love Ettore's bass tone of large size, always centered, consistent throughout ranges, his raw genuine approach to the arias. Either way, their combination on stage, together with Mara Callas and other great female artists... it is just so luxury and extremely glorious for Operatic World. No more now... they are the best!
