How do we get our container back? Shipping scam Mombasa, Part 2 // Overland Series EP.35

  • We knew shipping to Africa would be difficult, we were not expecting a scam like this. Struggling to get our container back.
We put the car into a container in Aqaba, Jordan and after a couple of days we left Jordan towards UAE. We spent some time in Dubai with Ali and Mohammed before we continued to Zanzibar to spend another week on the island. After some relaxed time on Zanzibar we flew to Mombasa to straighten out paperwork and customs before our container would arrive. What happened next we couldn't have imagined in our worst nightmares. We were victims of scam, big time and had to fear to lose the container with the car and the motorcycle.
Shipping to Africa is an adventure by itself especially to Mombasa, Kenya. We really recommend to go with a well know company like "United East African Warehouses" or others that might get recommended by people who shipped with them. So you're not target of a scam. There are lots of companies out there in Mombasa which are scammers like "citadel smart logistics" or "anchor jet logistics" we really do not recommend to use the shipper or forwarder out of Mombasa that give you a too competitive rate they will take your money and run.
Let us know if you need help finding a shipper in Jordan or in Mombasa!

We were the victims of incompetence shipping our Defendet from London to Cape Town.
Firstly the MSC vessel decided not to stop in Cape Town and went on to Port Elizabeth where the container was offloaded. It was put on another vessel and taken back to Cape Town. It waited in the bay for about a week before a berth was available.
Our customs agent was totally useless. They did no expediting at all and it took nearly 2 weeks to get the container through the port. We of course had to pay extra charges to the port and to MSC. The arrival bill was around 200 Euros, about double what it should have been. We also lost about 5 weeks in total.
Compare that with shipping the vehicle from Borneo to Felixstowe. The container was released within 4 hours of docking and in our hands the same day.

Wow. Sad to hear this!! Specially bad to have to wait that long, the extra charge was not that high for what it could have been in my opinion. We have heard pretty terrifying stories about crazy bills. Let's see the positive, you have arrived the Landy has arrived. Let's cheer that up!!! 🎉

At least I know you got out of this; its been great following the middle east trip and to watch the videos improve as you gain experience. Was great to add the drone in Saudi after you got out of Iran, some great shots giving a good view of campsites and sunsets. Looking forward to the Africa leg, hope you are enjoying South America.

So happy to read your comments from our past travels. The time in Mombasa was really tough, one of the worst of the whole trip. We got out of it , but our budget never ever recovered after this (we lost 2000$) 🥺😭 regarding the drone, we had to be careful in Iran and didn't want to risk our trip by showing it in RUclips! You will have an amazing time watching the videos in Africa. 😍

@Thebluelandy for sure, drone in Iran and you would be arrested for spies and lose many months in custody. But glad you had it for Jordan. I aim to catch up by Christmas :)

We definitely didn’t went with the cheapest, we got so many offers from different locations, this one looked ok ( back when we had to choose) now knowing sooo much more about shipping it’s clear that this price was too good to be true.

In 2022, so many Africans in NRW paid container transportation to a German and he didn’t pay for the shipment. People lost thousands of Euros. This shipping business agents are very unreliable

We’re normally not cheap, but shipping is so intransparent… especially if it’s your first time… it really hard to get reliable information on a Route no Overlander shipped before.
Yeah we will need to check the budget more closely in the next months to get back on track.
