Indonesian military power did step down from power after '98. Strip off their own political rights in thee parlemen voluntarily, ditch their rights to fill positions on civilian government positions including presidency. Laydown all their business entities and be professional army nothing more than that, limited their movement for national defense only. I was born and raised under the old man regime in the 2000s it was bad .I lived in a city of 200k residents there was no running water or Electricity or tv. We could survive because of the fertile soils where you grows veggies and rice all year long in your back yards and empty lands I left the country in 2009. Sustainable liberal democracy is only achievable in a country with relative stability and has achieved a certain degree of educational, economic and infrastructural institutional development.
Military governments needs to realize that in modern state, overall state security is dependent upon it being able to share powers and responsibilities with crucial civil institutions for survival. Case in example, Prussia , Meiji Japan and military government of South Korea . These government all has military military a decisive role in the shaping of public policy, sometimes detrimentally, but they were comparatively more successful as senior military leaders know when to share power with private enterprise, universities, government departs and central bank.
This is not only crucial for a modern state but a for a military to fight and win a modern war. r

I was born and raised under the old man regime in the 2000s it was bad .I lived in a city of 200k residents there was no running water or Electricity or tv. We could survive because of the fertile soils where you grows veggies and rice all year long in your back yards and empty lands I left the country in 2009. Now is much worse there because the civil war going on.

Myanmar (Burma) is a very beautiful country, sadly the nation is not yet ready for a transition of government and political ideology from military dictatorship to a democracy. We in the ASEAN felt utmost sadness.
