I really like the Journal. However would prefer it to be across devices: MacBook - iPad etc. Until then I'll stick with the 'Day One' app. I mainly journal on iPad, it's very handy that it goes to my other devices automatically. iPhone only is not so useful in my case.
I think Apple launched it smartly. If we learn to use it on the phone, it becomes habit. Then we can augment it with other devices once it’s multi device capable. Realistically, we have a phone on us all the time, a Macbook Pro? Not so much.
I was so stoked about this, but after trying it, it falls short for me. I wish I could export entries, and I wish I could search within the journal. They also 100% need the Journal app to cloud-sync across one’s apple ecosystem. I hope they update these ASAP! Until they do, the plain ol’ Notes app has it beat. 😢
Hi! Glad to see someone talking about the Journal app from the YT community. I am writing a story on Medium myself about the Journal app and comparing it to other journaling apps. I feel it lacks a lot of basic features but since Apple centers their design around simplicity, those getting started in journaling will love this app.
Thank you! Yes, long-running journal-writers may find it limiting, and if you have a big database in something like Day One it may not be as appealing, but for someone like me just starting out and always having struggled with journaling, it's been great.
This sort of article, is actually what I’ve been looking for and can’t find a comparison between day one and other journaling apps with “the apple journal app”. But I really can’t find anything at all, which seems annoying and weird considering there are many RUclipsrs and influencers that are deep into the apple ecosystem and who have touted day one as one of their “life changing” apps…so I hoped and was expecting there to be a fair amount of videos that could show me the exact differences, pro and cons, where each app lacks. After all there is no perfect app…hopefully after the release of iOS 17.2 more of these videos will start popping up. Until then, where can I find your article?
So sorry to hear about your father. I lost my father in September 2022. I hope you’re hanging in there and know you are surrounded by people willing to help
Thank you for saying so, and I have lots of family and friends supporting me. Sorry to hear of your loss too. One book that’s helped me during this time is “The Other Side of Sadness” by George Bonano
I love journal so far but agree some of recommendations would make it even better. I'm not a big fan of posting everything I do on social media so love this app as I get to post to journal and then can look back and it's just for me. Love your videos. Keep posting
I am loving the journal app. Before this, I used the default notes app and had created a journal folder there. The app is not distracting in anyway, its simple and elegant as journal apps should be. Love it.
Your videos are very helpful and you explain things well. I'm sorry about your dad! I lost my mom about a year ago and it's tough when a parent leaves us.
I’ve had difficulty keeping up with a journaling routine in the past. Like a lot of people, I would buy physical notebooks only for writer’s block to happen. I love the new journal app. The prompts help get my ideas flowing
Without the search function, I find it to be totally worthless. At this stage of its development, i am far better off using the Notes app which may take a bit more effort to use, but is fully searchable. Why does Apple not do their research when creating apps so that when they are presented for use they have had a rounded real world test. Ty for a great review.
This app only works on the iPhone, not the iPad which sucks since most journalers I know use a keyboard and not their fingers. Oh, well. Nice try,Apple. Swing and a miss.
Wow. That last part about how your dad passed away... I would LOVE to have those features on his phone. It's been almost two years and I still haven't had the heart to mess with his devices or anything because i would love to be able to archive some memories and content in a way that doesn't mean it ends up as just another folder somewhere on my computer. I would also love if you could import info from other note taking or journaling apps. For some basic entries from apps I've used previously so it's all together.
I would also love that you can make a difference between a Journal Privately and one for Business. Especially when traveling for business this might be useful.
Sorry about your dad. Thanks for this useful review. I recently started caring for my grandson while his parents work. I use the app to jot down things about his day. I would love to be able to share the entries with my daughter in law. I’m enjoying this app.
I was pretty disappointed with journal app when it came out. The thing I noticed right way was the lack of title, and the choices when it comes to organizing. But I do think the suggestions and being able to add photos and podcast episodes is really cool.
Hope that they take your recommendations and develop them. Thank you for making this video; it has been very helpful to understand this app and imagine what I can do with it in the long run. I salute you from South America. Cheers.
Sorry to hear about your dad! I hope you are able to find special memories on his phone even if they can’t integrate into the Journal app quite yet. Thank you for this video. Do you know if there is a way to add an entry from my call history if I don’t see the conversation appear in the “suggested” section?
Appreciate you saying so. And unfortunately there isn't a way to add media or locations to an entry that aren't already suggested. Only photos can be added "manually." Hopefully that can change in future updates!
I just got my new 15 plus yesterday and updated software today. The journal app showed up. I will most certainly use this app. Thank you so much for this video. Awesome job.
Like you I’ve been testing the beta version for a few weeks but something bugs me… The moment date does not always work. So I had a few photos I took with my iPhone on two specific dates one being a concert I went to last week. But the moment date fails to know the date I went even though it’s in the photo metadata taken by the phone : Apple iPhone 15 Pro Main Camera - 24 mm f1.78 9 MP • 3024 × 3024 Saturday • 2 Dec 2023 • 22:09. I also tried to show my wife on her iPhone that it will change the date entry to the date of her photo when Moment was selected, again a photo she took 3 weeks ago didn’t work. Strange because it does work on some photos I have, but I can’t narrow down as to why some photos will backdate and others don’t.
I’ve been keeping a journal for a couple months now but I have to write it in cursive so my nosy wife can’t read it (English is not her first language) so the journal app I think is great but I will only be using once they make it possible to have a different passcode for that specific app
I’m support excited about this app too, but can you do voice journaling? Or it’s all typing? Also, your Father would be proud of the wonderful work your doing.
Hello Stephen, Thanks for sharing lots of details as always 🙏 Quick question - When we copy photos to Journal app from our photos app , Will the photos not consume double the space in iphone , i mean storing the same photos in two different apps . Please correct me and do share info on this. Thanks !
Something I would really like to see is formatting. I do a lot of audio messages and then number them and write about them. But I would love to make some things bold to differentiate thoughts and sub-thoughts.
I wish we could upload Journal to Pages or elsewhere to make a book of it. Put a request in for that. Great presentation. I’ve been using it for a few months and Learned some good tips.
First of all my condoleances. I love this app and use it almost every day. I think your suggestions are perfect and I hope they will keep developing this app to make it more complete. I think it would be great if we can keep more journals in the future so I can keep one about my children and one more personal or about fitness goals.
I am yet to discover the Journal app, installing 17.2 right now. It seems pretty cool, but as you said some things are missing. I'm sure over time features will get added and improved. Too sad it's not available on other Apple OS's (yet?).
I like this concept, but why isn't it available on the Mac? I wish it would pull the activity from iOS, but have the option to write it on the Mac where it is more comfortable. Just my 2 cents.
I’ve just been using notes - have a folder called Journal & begin with date - move screen shots, vids, photos, voice memos, etc into, no prob. This app looks bit complicated. And, of course, Notes is across devices. And in headline/title I put all keywords I need so I can find topics in searches.
Thank you for your video! Very helpful and I’m so with you on your suggestions for future updates. I’m SUPER bummed that it’s not on iPad yet. I’d like to be able to hand write my entries.
Nice review 🙂. Dummy question here to you and your subscribers: I started to use Journal but stopped right away as it seems it doesn't support hyperlinks! I like to keep track of cool RUclips videos but I can just past the raw link. I can't believe such a basic feature is not supported. Tell me I'm missing something obvious here and it's possible to refer to YT videos 🤣.
Thanks for the review I has been waiting this app But, after release I wondering Strange Apple behavior Journal App has: - no editing tools - no access even in the Apple Ecosystem (No iPad, Mac even Web version) - no simple folders / tags to systemize your data Quite strange - biggest tech world giant announced app without any features
Condolences on your loss. I think if we all yse their feedback page to notify them of what we want, they will move faster (it's the only page they read tbh)
Do you install the beta updates to use the feedback app and make these recommendations? I made the recommendation about search functionality but not the others. Those are great ideas.
A lot of people have similar concerns, like not having a "search" feature for instance. But this is for Mindfulness. All your concerns are not in line with the purpose of journaling. Understanding mindfulness more clearly may clear up some confusion for you. After all mindfulness is only interested in right now, not ruminating over the past. What you are looking to do is more of a diary. That would best be done in Pages. Perhaps using the Page Lay Out mode for pictures, video, links etc. would be best. Journaling wants you to think about what was going on, your thoughts, emotions, maybe a lesson learned. This expands your awareness of the present to keep you in the present and not the past.
The only thing I miss from this app would be to set certain tags/categories to entries, in a few months if I want to find an entry from the past which isn't one or two months ago good luck with that... I don't really care about suggestions so I just need to add entries and find previous entries easily to be happy with it.
I would most like to see a print option in the app. as well as have the laptop version (when it happens) then it'd be easier to edit with a full keyboard and not iphone one finger tap to edit. I like to keep a physical journal record too and it'd be nice to see/have printed pages. Thanks for your rundown on this app...I'm enjoying it too!!
Thanks for the video. The Journal App looks promising, looking forward to try it. It definitely needs all the mentioned improvements. Search function, more flexible selections and cross device function. Additionally I hope that in IOS 18 they finally roll out their own generative AI applications. Instead of just a search function, I would hope they consider a language model (not large, I guess) for the Journal App. So that I could also ask for summaries, ask questions, and get some analysis. That could be quite interesting over time.
The one and only question I have regarding journal apps is how they can save my entries. I really want to know if this is backed up on iCloud at all. I recently lost 4 months of journaling due to a Journey journal app crash. I am now afraid to use any app. Where is this backed up? I went on my iCloud hoping to see the journal app listed on my apps. It is currently not there. Do you have any insight about the backing up capabilities of the app. Thanks so much for any help!
I've used Day One for about a year and have viewed the location tagging as a way to mark the location I was at while composing the entry. I'm migrating my entries over to Apple Journal now and trying to decide if I should use the location feature to tag places relevant to what I was actually writing about.
I would love to have the ability to import Day One entries as well as Markdown entries so that I can compile my journals together, the other thing it needs is prompts. I tend to journal with a prompt and would like to be able to build prompts/templates within the app.
Me too with Day One. Since Apple just released their app, I’m patient and can wait for when they hopefully add an import feature. Thankfully Day One has three export capabilities.
@@Azn_Bran I installed Obsidian a couple of weeks ago. I have yet to truly try it out. I do like the feature where all the circles float around to show the relational connectivity of each circle.
Thank you Stephen for an excellent review! The Journal App is one of the most useful apps Apple has produced for me in years! I use it very similarly to how you use it! Great video!
I back up my iPhone to my Mac manually. Do you know if my Journal entries get backed up? So for instance if I get a new iPhone and restore from my Mac, will my Journal entries be preserved?
I can’t seem to find hard info on that, but it does seem like Journal sync to iCloud even if you’re not backing up to iCloud. So I would make sure the journal toggle is on in Settings > iCloud
TY for useful video.... Can I ask you something? How do I download photos or video files saved in an existing journal? There is no download button and the only answer is a screenshot? :(
First of all thank you Stephen for your video, like always very enjoyable and thanks for sharing all your thoughts about it. Also sorry to hear about your dad, I think it’s great that you are looking to recreate this mo,ents and memories that you shared with him. I really think that is a great use of technology to help us with our humanity. :) Now my complaints, I started using day one about 2 months ago, so don’t really have much of a “baggage” if I were to move to the native apple journal app. I was really looking forward to the integration of the app being able to know and suggest things according to what I listen, take pictures, physical activities and others. I was ready to open up the doors to my private life to apple. Which to be fair they already know me as much as I know me. Anyway Day one sort of does it all, with pictures and prompts as suggestions and it even has the option that you choose a date and it shows me what pictures I took back then and where. So day one also has little prompts to get you to think about something and write about it, which I get through their widget. I find it it’s a really great way to get into journaling, without even thinking about it. So I’m somewhat disappointed with what seems to be lack of features and specially integration of all the information my phone knows about me, to help me journal and reflect about my day, etc., that it doesn’t integrate your other apple devices and no suggestions about what you did in a specific day in the past. I was really looking forward to it, since apple seems to know how to come late to the party with a feature but in a way you never thought about. So if a third app can use and access all that information why can’t apple do the same? I’d be happier to let just one company, Apple, have access to my private information than two companies… So from all I can see Day One is still the best journaling app for iPhone. Hopefully they begin by adding a search function and the past date journal entries. Keep up with the videos and already looking forward to your next one.
Thank you for the kind words, and for watching 🙏 It seems Day One users like yourself (even if for a short time) know what a powerful journal app can offer. Hopefully we see Apple add some of these features in coming 17.X updates and more in iOS 18!
Needs more improvements. First thing i noticed, there is no title - therefore no editing tool. I hope they add some editing features for the actual journal taking process. And also, being able to add templates for a more structured journaling experience.
May be I did not understand correctly. Once you have written some daily notes, are you able to export/edit/see them on a computer? the data stay on the iPhone forever?
I went into settings and selected a schedule journal date, it wouldn’t set. Got a pop up, go into notifications in setting to schedule. Tried several time. 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
It’d be nice also to have specific groupings for journal entries. Like for example, I may want to document each week of my pregnancy and have a grouping for all those entries.
Great content ! I think I will love this app . I didnt see a share option . For example way to share the journal entry to Facebook , Instagram , X , ect . That would be amazing because I think this app could almost add a MySpace content vibe. Advanced blogging basically
Makes no sense that before this app I kept a journal of sorts on Notes and had a lock with a different passcode on the note but can't keep my journal app with a different passcode. Great review, BTW.
Can I make separate journal sections for example, could I create one journal for my trip to Italy and then another journal for a separate trip? Or is it all just one big flow of entries?
I’ve used many different journaling set ups before I started out by writing my journal in notability on iPad. Then I moved onto Notion. Then I moved to Goodnotes on iPad. I also done it on procreate once. And I’m finally I’m using Day one it would be great if I could import all the entries from Day One to Apple journal app until that happens I think I’m going to stick with Day one.
As far as I can see, there's no third party suggestions API. Apple have only provided API for third party apps to show the suggestions *view*, the same as you see in Apple's Journal app. So a third party journaling app could use iOS 17.2's new suggestion prompts view, but a third party service such as Spotify can't add in any suggestions of their own.
Looks interesting. Will be interested in how much they will improve it. Years with Apple Music and still not user friendly for subscribers (pay for even poorer performance!) I may not have caught it in the video, so I will ask; does it have the ability to share an entry you create to Facebook?
Sorry to hear your father passed, mine also passed this year. I think it’s nice you kept his phone as a memory.
Sorry to hear about yours too. If you're interest, the book "The Other Side of Sadness" has helped us process.

Wow it doesn’t sync across devices? I’ll be sticking with Day One for now, too.
That’s so odd. You’d think Apple would make this app sync across all your other Apple devices considering they have many apps that already do.
Yeah, really needs cross device syncing and search
Not acceptable not be supported across Apple devices. I erased the app and never use it till it is done
I think Apple launched it smartly.

- no simple folders / tags to systemize your data
Quite strange - biggest tech world giant announced app without any features
Certainly needs the whole ecosystem and better organization / search.
Condolences on your loss. I think if we all yse their feedback page to notify them of what we want, they will move faster (it's the only page they read tbh)
Do you install the beta updates to use the feedback app and make these recommendations? I made the recommendation about search functionality but not the others. Those are great ideas.
Now they will know everything about me in one place 😅
It doesn't even capture a time and a location! It also needs to be able to tag entries and use multiple journals. I switched straight back to Day One.
Tags and categories would be great!
Great video and suggestions for improvement. I’d love to see the same app on the IPad
Thanks! Hoping to see sine updates at WWDC next week!
Really like the Journal app. Needs to be on iPad as well as that’s where I spend most of my time.
Needs iPad app for sure
I was so disappointed when 17.2 came out and Journal was not a part of the iPad release.
Sorry about your dad my condolences to and your family!!!!🙏🙏🙏🙏
Appreciate that 🙏 we've gotten past the 1 year mark which was a big moment. The book "The Other Side of Sadness" has helped a lot.
Can an entry be shared from the journal to another iPhone user? We just had a baby, it would be nice to share some entries with friends or family.
No sharing or exporting yet, hopefully in version 2.0!
There was something similar long time ago … I would love to share those memories also but this function it seems is not possible right?
You can’t share at the moment. Hopefully sharing, search, and calendar view come in the future!
A way to share entries would be good too.
Definitely needed
Love your "wishlist"...I hope Apple adds them to this app
Thanks, and same!
How come it’s not available for the iPad???
Surely it’s coming, but unfortunate it’s not here at launch.
Hey! It’s backed up with your device iCloud backups, yes. Maybe when it comes out for iPad / Mac it’ll be listed as a synced app.
I've used Day One for about a year and have viewed the location tagging as a way to mark the location I was at while composing the entry. I'm migrating my entries over to Apple Journal now and trying to decide if I should use the location feature to tag places relevant to what I was actually writing about.
I would, especially if one day they offer a "map overview" view where you can see your entries plotted.
@@BlackBagData agreed. I primarily use Obsidian now having ,over from day one but I miss many of the old features.
Thanks for the kind words 🙏🏻 appreciate it!
I back up my iPhone to my Mac manually. Do you know if my
Journal entries get backed up? So for instance if I get a new iPhone and restore from my Mac, will my Journal entries be preserved?
I can’t seem to find hard info on that, but it does seem like Journal sync to iCloud even if you’re not backing up to iCloud. So I would make sure the journal toggle is on in Settings > iCloud
@@beardfm that’s good to know about the iCloud setting. Thank you.
TY for useful video....
Can I ask you something?
How do I download photos or video files saved in an existing journal?
There is no download button and the only answer is a screenshot? :(
There is no option, unfortunately. Hopefully soon!
Now my complaints, I started using day one about 2 months ago, so don’t really have much of a “baggage” if I were to move to the native apple journal app.
I’d be happier to let just one company, Apple, have access to my private information than two companies…
So from all I can see Day One is still the best journaling app for iPhone.
Yes, all needed!
Thank you so much for this! And thank you for your vulnerability… Sorry for your loss!
Is journal coming to iPad?
May be I did not understand correctly. Once you have written some daily notes, are you able to export/edit/see them on a computer? the data stay on the iPhone forever?
Unfortunately you are not able to export or edit them on a Mac. Hopefully a Mac app is coming soon but no announcement on that yet.
ok so I did understand well. thank you!@@beardfm
Does it have audio transcription to be perfect?
Great content ! I think I will love this app . I didnt see a share option . For example way to share the journal entry to Facebook , Instagram , X , ect . That would be amazing because I think this app could almost add a MySpace content vibe. Advanced blogging basically
Will this app save your entries if you upgrade your phone?
Yes it’s saved and backed up to iCloud!
I currently have a journal I use mostly for my adventures and for scouting out history and for trail hiking also.
Makes no sense that before this app I kept a journal of sorts on Notes and had a lock with a different passcode on the note but can't keep my journal app with a different passcode. Great review, BTW.
Going to miss hearing you on the apple insider podcast!
I’ll miss hosting too! But pushing harder than ever here on RUclips
This is such a great app … thanks for the vid
I think so too! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Can I make separate journal sections for example, could I create one journal for my trip to Italy and then another journal for a separate trip? Or is it all just one big flow of entries?
It's just one big flow of entries. Categories or tags like you're saying would be helpful.
your glasses are gorgeous 😭😭 link pls
Thank you! Warby Parker Gillian: www.warbyparker.com/eyeglasses/gillian/teal-tortoise
can you tell me what is the name for your glasses. am in the market for one
Day One seems to be the gold standard at the moment. Lots of people hoping for that import feature.
same !
Erroneously have deleted journal application now how to downaload the application
Shame the number of picture entries can accomodate seem to be limited.
Years with Apple Music and still not user friendly for subscribers (pay for even poorer performance!)
I may not have caught it in the video, so I will ask; does it have the ability to share an entry you create to Facebook?
It does not. At least at this specific time.
One thing is I wish you could do is log your mood in it like you can in the health app!
That would be nice!
