Best team I can remember in my lifetime for sure. They had 7 guys off that team play in the NBA at one point or another. That's almost hard to believe. They don't blow that lead against UNLV, they had a good chance to win it all.
Our best team ever went 32-0 and was national champions in 76. Iowa blew a 20 point lead to UNLV or else they would have been in the final four against Indiana where we would have beaten them.
I agree. Davis inherited most of this team from Raveling, but he got so much more out of them. The platooning and the press could devastate opponents. Davis also found the natural roles for unusual players - hence a lineup with a 6-8 center, forwards standing 7-0 and 6-5, a 6-6 shooting guard and a skinny ten-year-old at the point. But yes, the best Hawkeye team ever. They were tough.
Great Channel. In my opinion college basketball in the 80s was the best it's ever been. Furthermore, the Big Ten in the late 80s was awesome. Just like the Big East in the mid 80s and the ACC in the early 80s. I'm a Gopher fan who had a ton of respect for this Iowa team. It's a shame they didn't finish off UNLV.
Glad you are liking the channel. The late '80s was awesome in the Big 10. That UNLV game still haunts all the Hawk fans from that time. They had 7 guys off that team that played in the NBA, that will never happen again. They would have played Indiana again if they would have won, they had a chance to win it all, especially considering they already beat them once here. I've got some more late '80s/early "90s games to post, so stay tuned.
Yeah for the most part Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Illinois, and Michigan were really good in the late 80s. ESPN used to have Big Monday triple header. Big East game, followed by B10 game and would finish it off with a west coast game. Often times UNLV. That killed several cold January and February nights in Mpls for me
I remember those triple headers. I was just in my early teens so I couldn't stay up and watch the West Coast game. Lots of UNLV, probably Loyola Marymount too, they had those high scoring teams under Paul Westhead. I wish more of those televised games would have survived. There are some out there to watch on RUclips though.
Yeah, Iowa was giving “The Running Rebs” a lesson in what running hoops. Is all about. Up by 16 at the half and then came out the 2nd half and switched up their whole style, slowing the pace down and playing a half court game. The worst, mid-game strategy switch up, that I have ever seen in my life.
@@retrosportsvision5873Not Loyola Marymount. They were and are in the West Coast Conference while UNLV was in the Big West. Big Monday had conferences with Big(East,10,and West) In 1992 the Big 8 took over from the Big 10 as the Big 10 wasn’t crazy about the Eastern time zone games starting at 9:30
@@retrosportsvision5873 Great game great channel! Been a hawkeye fan since '87. Such a great team. I was 12 at the time. Do you have the 1987 game against Kansas? It was from November 1987. I have never seen that one and have been looking for it from time to time on the internet.
Since Indiana went on to win the NCAA title that year, I'd say they earned their spot on the same court with Iowa. But I'll grant you this - no other coach in 1987 could have won the national championship with a team that had NO first round draft picks. I don't know that that anyone else ever has, come to think of it.
That was Iowa''s best team ever!

@@retrosportsvision5873yeah, they would have won it all had they gotten past UNLV, which should have been an easy out for them.

Love this iowa channel :) Do you have the 1987 USSR At Iowa exhibition game?
Nope don't have that one. Stayed tuned though, lots more Hawkeye games to come, and more '80s Cubs games.
@@retrosportsvision5873 Do you have any exhibition games Vs international teams?
@@retrosportsvision5873 Looking forward to it. Was a big fan in the marble/horton/armstrong era
No I wish I did. A lot of the games I recorded on VHS tapes got recorded over unfortunately. Those VHS tapes weren't cheap back in the day, lol.

Indiana won when it counted the most rip Bobby Knight
Go Hawks!
Indiana didn't really belong on the same court as that fabulous Iowa team. They were scary good here in this video archive. Loved this.

Where was that Iowa team in March?
Lost in the Elite 8 to UNLV after blowing a 20 point halftime lead.
