I stayed in Fairmount in 2009 and David Loehr who, along with Lenny Prussack, runs the James Dean Gallery took me to meet Marcus. He was busy working on the farm but stopped, shook my hand, and spent a little while just making a connection with me - an old guy from England who first saw Jimmy on the screen in 1956. I met him once more and again he was courteous and down to earth. I encourage anyone with a genuine interest in Jimmy to visit his home town. Good people live there.

Jimmy Dean is ALL that is said about him: a good person, talented in many areas, loving, responsive and attentive to and with his family. He sure seems to have embraced many of his curiosity's in life and WENT AFTER THEM-his dream. SO glad he did. He SURE CAME FROM 'GOOD STOCK'! Good, good people, genuine people and a family who genuinely loved him! Kudo's to his Dad for not being selfish; it must have been HARD for him to let go for JIMMY's welfare.

Thank you for letting us visit. I was nine yr's old when Jimmy died. My sister was looking through a movie magazine snd I was about ten years old at the time and I said Who is that!? She told me he died and I felt such sadness. I never forgot him or his birthday or the Anniversery of his death. I would hold a moment of silence the day and hour of his death. Guess I saw something very special in him and a closeness I can't explain. I'm seventy one years old now and every year for some reason on his birthday I feel drawn to him and find myself thinking about him.

At age 13 was an extra on Rebel at Santa Monica High. Jim was a uknown actor then and i was placed on scene right in front of him near a gleg light which he used to read by. He asked me to move over a little bit so i did not block the light.
He lived very close to the school very close to my home. I had seen him laying down on some grass at a acting theater near his home and I stoped to say hello...then moved on

By all accounts James Dean enjoyed his life in Fairmount and was close to his family there. After seeing this interview it's easy to see why. Marcus Winslow is clearly a salt of the earth guy who loved and respected his cousin, James Dean the person, and also understands the attraction for James Dean the legend. It also shows the true character of the family when he said "it was just an accident", and they didn't spend 50+ years blaming the other guy for the crash. Thanks for posting this down to earth interview.

My favorite photo of Jimmy Dean is not any of the Hollywood shots. It is the one where he is at home in Indiana during winter doing something very normal, pushing his young cousin Marcus in the derby car down the driveway. It's a simple and beautiful photograph. And I think it is his best photograph.

I could have met Marcus (I believe) during the 2005 50's anniversary of his death in Indiana when they took you on the tour. I waved to him from the street. I was so afraid to approach that house, like I would faint. It was so weird, I was expecting huge crowds and it was a pretty small group there. Loved seeing Rebel and Giant on the 90 ft movie screen at the airport! That pond is still in front of the farm house and is where my fav pic of James was taken. Thanks for this Marcus!

Mr. Winslow I saw an interview where Alec Guiness was speaking with a British host. He said that he had come to LA and was met by a female host. She wanted to take him out for dinner; they tried to go to several restaurants but were refused to be seated because the woman was wearing trousers. They were told about a small not so fancy Italian restaurant but all the tables there were taken so they left. Jimmy came running after them and told them that he had a table and they could share it . Before going in he wanted to show them a car he had just gotten; Guiness said it was the silver Porsche - still had a bouquet of flowers tied on the car. It was a Thursday night a little after 10pm. Guiness told Jimmy not to drive the car because he would be dead in a week. He died the next Thursday afternoon. Guiness also said he has never had such a vision about anything ever again. Perhaps it would be of interest to you.

I think James Dean's short, fast-paced life will remain a puzzle forever. I imagine that his private life was similar to that of most young people who feel the need to live together, to date, to walk and to have fun, as well as to seek personal fulfillment in some type of profession. What can be seen is that since he decided to be an actor, James Dean studied, decorated, rehearsed and worked hard on TV, theater and cinema. He had to sleep a little to enjoy the time and take care of his profession. Every actor, besides rehearsing, must take care of appearance and health to have energy and disposition when acting. In the space of only five years, only on television, he appeared in about 37 productions. He lived with an enormous amount of actors, directors and technicians, producers, makeup artists, photographers, costumes and so on. Even after performing in East of Eden, he continued to participate in TV shows in NYC and still had time to dedicate himself to car racing. Dean died very young. Losing friends and relatives is very hard and difficult to accept, but unfortunately in this life nothing is forever ...

Mr. Marcus Winslow, thank you for this wonderful video about James! I want to come out to Fairmount Indiana to see everything about James. He was a true legend and I believe no one could ever take his place. I believe he was one of the finest people who ever walked the face of this earth. One of the things I was really sad about was his relationship with Pier Angeli. She was a beautiful woman who really loved James and James truly loved her as well. It's so sad that they weren't allow to get married, but her mother put an end to their relationship. To many people and adoring fans, they were perfect together. May God rest both their souls, they were without a doubt the best !

I have watched documentaries and read books about Jimmie Dean. Watching this dispelled some untruths such as Jimmie Dean's father supposed abandonment of Jimmie. And the fact that Dean's father was actually a good man stuck in circumstances (WWII, death of his wife, his economic means, and what was best for Jimmie). Nice to hear from Mr. Winslow Jr. who knew Jimmie. Very entertaining and educational about someone who is an American Icon.

  • @Nacho-Mamma

They talk about how Jimmy was so close to his father when he went back to California, but Elia Kazan remarked in an interview of meeting Dean's father, and of how uncomfortable & distant they were when Jimmy took Elia to meet him just before filming East Of Eden. I honestly do understand that Dean's family would like to keep the good memories going about his relationship with his dad. But, I truly believe that Elia Kazan was telling the truth about their strained relationship.

For the most part, people from that generation and region didn’t open up about their feelings. On the intellectual level, it was for the best that Jimmy have the stable home life his grandmother, aunt and uncle could provide. However, at 9 years old he lost his mother and father and I don’t see how that wouldn’t have an impact on him. All things considered, it appears he lived a full life as a young boy and teen participating in many activities. I like to think if he and his dad had more time together as adults, they might have been able to bridge the gap in their relationship. However, it sounds like his dad was pretty quiet and may never been able to talk about important stuff with his son. I don’t doubt he loved his son, but there still are men (and women) who have a difficult time actually saying the words.

The car didn't disappear. And as for the idea that car parts were used in other cars, no way. The car was totaled and then some. The wreak went on tour and later ended up with Barris Auto. It was a wreck. The Jane Mansfield car ended up in a guys garage who lived nearby the accident and he just left it there for decades as he considered it a sad piece of history. He made it known that he had it decades later when he had heard that that car was missing.
The same is true with Buddy Hollys glasses and wallet. They were said to have disappeared for years. But the cop had put them in an envelope in a desk at the office. When he heard that these items were supposed to have disappeared, he retrieved them and told the press.
Young fans come up with these spooky urban legends.

I don't know how close Jimmy and his dad were or were not BUT I didn't like the James Dean for the reason Markie stated. In all the books I have read and there has been many, even the worse of the lot NEVER was it even hinted that Jimmy didn't belong to his daddy. That s a pretty huge lie and very very disrespectful to Jimmy s mother. I know a movie isn't a documentary BUT that is no small thing to lie about

Ortense was married to Marcus Winslow Sr. and Marcus Winslow Jr. is her son and is the man being interviewed. i hated the t.v. movie too simply because they made it like Jimmy s father was not the bio dad. you know they were saying Jimmy s mother was a whore without using the word. I can t count the number of James Dean biograpthie I read, some were great, some where alful but even the most great or bad not one hinted Veron was not Jimmy s dad . As so as the movie went there I turned it off

this interviewer stinks he cuts the man off but doesn't let him finish the sentence, he's got a lot to say about the real James Dean, we don't want to hear what this interview has to say about Kazan whatever, just shut up let man talk

This guy is SO low energy, my, my, my.... Difficult to listen to. You want to give him an AMP energy drink and three cups of coffee, and then turn the camera on!
