Thanks rolando! Yes I've gone in a very different direction the past few years but I always enjoyed studying fashion. I'll have to see if I can combine it with my current style of art. Thanks for watching :)
thank you for this video, I am applying to many fashion schools but keep getting rejected. This video helps a lot with the information on what to include and what styles the schools would be interested.
I'm glad. I would definitely check out the current course criteria's just to check what each university likes to focus on because some universities want different things. Good luck!!
Hi! This video is so helpful to me because i plan to study abroad at csm in next year, so i want to know how can i make a portfolio to apply ual fashion foundation cource? And it is really hard getting over to ba? At foundation. Thanks for reading the long comment, and i waiting for your comment!!
Hi, I'm glad the video helped you. Yes, it is difficult to get on to the BA course but if you have already done a foundation or you have a really good portfolioyou should be ok. It shouldn't be too hard to get on to the foundation course.
Hello, maybe this isn't helpful to you anymore, but I applied for the CSM Foundation last year. I went to several portfolio reviewings from both teachers and students and CSM and they all said it was perfect and just what they looked for in someone applying to the foundation (they even used my book as an example to show others on what style they looked for) and I still didn't get in. I would say the most important thing besides your portfolio is the interview (I think thats what I flaked on last year) and you should look very profesional, determined and excited. Make sure every bit of your portfolio is perfect, it can be messy but only inside your sketchbook, the rest needs to look clean and organised. Just make a good impression so they don't forget you! Also, don't be sad if you don't get in as it is very much so a gamble, as so many talented people apply. Also, the BA is reeeeeally hard to get in, and usually people recommend to go through the foundation first anyway. Hope this was helpful to you! And sorry for the long message!

Hey. I loved your portfolio its inspiring :) . I am planning to apply for the foundation course at LCF. So I just wanted a little advice on how can I work more precisely and include some things which they will like to see in my portfolio as you have much more experience and knowledge compared to me.
Hey, I would just include as many fashion designs as possible and try to include sketches/photographs/fabric samples which led you to those designs. Think about what makes you different from everybody else and try to interpret that through your portfolio. Good Luck :)
I'm applying this year too. So could you please give me some advices. I have done some works but I'm not sure how to put it all together. If it is ok for you, could you please help and give me advices.
Like I said in the video, make sure your portfolio has 80% percent of the area of fashion you would like to go into then add a little bit of everything else like styling, photography, design etc. Make sure you buy a portfolio and fill up to around 10-20 pages double sided. Add more skecth books if you want to. Hope it goes well!
Just keep trying! You can do anything you put your mind to! You don't necessarily have to be really good at drawing to get into the Fashion Industry but you have to have passion and the drive to work hard 😄
How do you go about starting your portfolio? How early should you start it in advance and what is important to include for the fashion design/communication/ styling portfolio?
I started gathering pieces for it over a year but that was because I was studying other subjects too. Definitely put a few months work into it. Start by picking some themes and drawing some outfits surrounding those themes. Add reference pictures and fabric samples. Maybe photograph some outfits put together surrounding different themes and explain why you've put certain items of clothing together and where your inspiration comes from etc. Hope that helps. A good portfolio will have between 15-20 large pages
Hi Nicole, Yes I used to shoot my photos with a Canon DSLR camera. Its great for playing around with shutter speed and aperture but to be honest, these days the phones are so good with their cameras that you could probably get away with using that if you don't want to spend lots of money on a new camera. I didn't go into styling too much but what I remember the styling tutor saying was the more creative you could make the shoots and the outfits, the better. Remember, they are seeing lots of different portfolios so you need to make sure yours stands out. Whether that's the use of colours or fabrics or how you put the outfits together, just make sure it doesn't look like everyone else. See if you can find some more examples online. Good luck 👍🏻
I really want to do fashion design (the sketches and textiles) but also want to do photography and now also maybe styling, I also take art gcse too and I'm good at fine art. This is my dream uni and I've been wondering if you can do more than one option so which do you do and can you tell me more on the portfolio course please :)
I think it would be good for you to do the portfolio course because you get to try a bit of everything then and then you can decide what you prefer. Have a look online at the course specification and it should you loads more details :)

Hey, thanks for watching! I think what you're doing is great! It may be an idea to do a foundation or portfolio course first so that you gain some experience into the areas you havent been able to study. LCF has a few of those type of courses so maybe check them out. But just keep up with what you're doing already and get as many designs down on paper - the more they see, the better. Good luck :)
Hello, I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this comment, but your work is amazing! I’m thinking of applying to the fashion portfolio course as well and I wanted to know if you found it hard to get into it?😌
Sorry I didn't see the comment sooner! It wasn't too hard to get into the Foundation Course course but the BA course is very competitive! If you work hard though, you have a good shot!
Emma its a great video and I'm doing fashion and I'm putting together a portfolio but I need a mannequin so were did you get them pictures of mannequin from??
Hi Josh, the university gave us those images (quite a while ago now so I no longer have them). I'm sure you could find one online of take a photo of a mannequin?
Hi, I applied about 7 years ago so the process for applying might be slightly different now. You have to fill in a UCAS form as far as I'm aware and then send off applications to the universities that you are interested in. They will then reply to you and either invite you for an interview or let you know the next stage. Hope that helps. Maybe ask your teacher?
Im working on a portfolio, i wanna study fashion design but im a begginer when it comes to sewing.. do you think i should apply to study a fine art foundation course first? and can i maybe ask for your advice if you dont mind?💕 tysm💕
It might be an idea to do a Foundation course first however as long as you have a really good skill of fashion design then it doesn't really matter if you can't sew because ultimately others will do that for you in the end (in the industry). If you're concerned though, maybe do a foundation course to increase your knowledge - that's what I did!
Sorry, i just want to know that if i have never learnt fashion design before then i want to apply for fashion design BA course in CSM or London College of Fashion, should i put something relate to drawing or designing clothes in my portfolio, or just put anything into it. Thank you so much
Hey, if you want to do a design course then you should definitely try and put some drawing and design into it. They will want to see the sort of knowledge you already have and how you communicate your ideas and designs onto paper and then into garments.
I'm planning to study fashion design at UAL, if I do a foundation year will I be getting a job directly after finishing? I am planning to do a 9 month certificate course in Dubai next year and then go for a foundation year or undergrad depending on which suits better, will I be eligible for a job? Or do I need a masters?
It completely depends on what the job requirement states. Some companies don't mind a foundation degree but others want BA's or MA's. It also depends on your talent especially when it comes to being an artist or designer in the creative world and how you come across in an interview. Good luck 👍🏻
Thanks!!!! This video is soo helpful!! I'm a 8th grader going to apply to a fashion Highschool, but to get in I need to create a fashion portfolio. Wish me luck!!
Some of the top designers in the world can't draw well but they have amazing designs in their heads. Its not super important to be able to draw amazingly if you want to be a designer but if you want more practice maybe print off some pictures of a mannequin and start by learning how to draw clothes on them.
This was most of the portfolio I made whilst I was there on the FA course. I added a bit more illustration as that was the BA course I was interviewing for.
Hey! love this video, it helped me gauge an idea of what i need to make for my portfolio, however i want to apply to the fashion styling and production course at LCF but i don’t know what to do! i’m really struggling because i’ve never done a fashion subject before, i’m currently studying photography at a level and i apply to uni next academic year, am i starting my portfolio too late ? i have absolutely nothing so far i could put in, everyone says your portfolio should be a story that demonstrates your personal journey but i’m not sure where to start my journey. Have you got any tips or ideas of what i should include, do i need to add fabrics or designs (i’ve never done design before!), should i add designers and stylists i aspire to? please help ! also what size sketch book do you recommend i begin with ?
Hi Sophie, thanks for your comment. From the sounds of it, it may be a good idea to also apply for a foundation course at LCF to help you build a portfolio for the BA courses which is what I did. The competition was super high when I was applying to get on any of the BA courses so having spent a year already studying there gave me a real good chance. However to help you with your portfolio now - I would say you need to include maybe 3 or 4 styling projects. Start with a theme, then include some imagery and some styling shoots of your own. Have a look at the small black styling book that I included in this video and maybe produce a few of them. They like to see the idea behind the shoot so you need to start from the beginning and show them the whole breakdown of why and how you styled the model. You don't necessarily need to include designs or fabrics but it always helps to have a little. It's up to you what size sketchbook you use but just make sure you fill it up at least 2 thirds. So if you don't have so much then maybe start with a smaller sketchbook. I hope that helps a little x
Can I ask something? Would you recommend these techniques and tips for a costume design portfolio I have like a week to finish mine and my teachers just decided to tell me o basically suck and that I only have 15% of it done and I am so stressed at it.
Oh no! I'm so sorry they said that! They should be encouraging you. Yes, these tips would be fine for a costume design portfolio but you would obviously change the themes to suit costume design. Maybe you could look at different eras or different cultures to inspire yourself. Also, feel free to make everything a bit more flamboyant and colourful. Make sure you include loads of reference images too. Good luck! 👍🏻😁
Hey, was the fashion illustration course you did in LCF mainly focused on fashion illustrations? because when I looked on the course detail it said it is mainly based around animation and when I looked at the student work it was mainly moving image illustrations for books? instead of developing on drawing and designing clothes. Could you tell me a bit about the course before I accept my offer? Thank you!
Hi Laura, the course I studied was Fashion Portfolio (which was a mixture of everything). I'm afraid I can't give you too much knowledge into the illustration course. The time I applied was about 8 years ago so it may have changed dramatically. At the time the course was heavily fashion illustration but involved aspects of animation, print design etc. I would suggest you look up some forums or facebook groups of people who are studying the course now to get more info. Hope you make the best decision :)
Sorry, I just saw in your description now that you didn't do the fashion illustration course! I think you would have made an amazing student in the course your work is amazing! But the fashion portfolio course sounds really good too! Thank you, I will have a look around even on Instagram, my deadline for choosing a uni was a couple of days ago and sadly I didn't choose London as I thought it would be too much "hassle" changing UAL and course as they don't do fashion design in Shepard's bush/Lime Grove :( But thank you, I chose - Fashion Graphics in the end, I hope I made the right decision there as I want to be a fashion designer yet a fashion illustrator too :') (sorry for the para) I hope you're making good use of your skills and get to where you wanna be! x
That's so great! I'm sure you've made the right decision. Plus usually you have a little window of a couple of months where if you really don't like the course you're doing you can meet with the tutors and see if you can transfer. I did my portfolio course in Shepard's Bush and I really enjoyed it. Good luck with everything!!
Hey guys. I’m applying to London College of Fashion and I can’t find the course I’m looking for,. Foundation diploma in fashion. Can you please send me the link?

From my experience they do but again I'm talking from about 7 years ago so I'm not sure if it's changed since then. Maybe try to scan in some research pages to add to your digital portfolio. Have a look at the portfolio guidelines they have now and see what they suggest.
Hello my name is Rawan from Algeria I am 16. I am studying in a high school. I aspire to study fashion, but I do not have information about universities and scholarships. can you help me?
As in the designs? I look at the theme I'm working with and the patterns, shapes and structure that I can see. Then I look at the texture and colours. I start to draw some rough sketches of what I can see and start to draw it on/around a picture of a mannequin. Sometimes I'll look at previous catwalk images to get inspiration as well
@@thesassyharley8912 Yes I would say they definitely look at the quality over quantity. You still need a decent size portfolio but just make sure they is a little bit of every technique in there. Hope it goes well!

So beautiful! I am working on my own portfolio right now. Would you mind If i send it to you? I would love to hear your opinion... :)
Of course you can - emmalouiserave@gmail.com
I would also like to send u mine, but the school am applying to, gave their specific requirements, I need help pls
@@deliterichard8766 Of course, feel free to send it to me :)
Just a quick question, do the photo references to silhouettes have to be from architecture?
Hi Amanda, no not at all! That was my project at the time. You can pick any sort of theme or inspiration 😁
I can’t draw well but I have really good imagination for designs and stuff but I don’t know how my drawings or designs can look nice and be clear
Some of the top designers in the world can't draw well but they have amazing designs in their heads. Its not super important to be able to draw amazingly if you want to be a designer but if you want more practice maybe print off some pictures of a mannequin and start by learning how to draw clothes on them.
Can you make a video on the portfolio that you prepared during the fashion portfolio course?
This was most of the portfolio I made whilst I was there on the FA course. I added a bit more illustration as that was the BA course I was interviewing for.
@@EmmaRave ohh okayy!😊
Great portfolio🔥
Thank you!!!
Hey! love this video, it helped me gauge an idea of what i need to make for my portfolio, however i want to apply to the fashion styling and production course at LCF but i don’t know what to do! i’m really struggling because i’ve never done a fashion subject before, i’m currently studying photography at a level and i apply to uni next academic year, am i starting my portfolio too late ? i have absolutely nothing so far i could put in, everyone says your portfolio should be a story that demonstrates your personal journey but i’m not sure where to start my journey.
Emma Ravens thank you so much, this really helped me! x
@@sophparry7413 Anytime :) x
great detailed drawings
Great video, very informative
Good luck! 👍🏻😁
@@EmmaRave thank you so much for this, you have genuinely helped me more in 15 minutes than they have in the past 6 months, seriously thank you !
@@rosieaudios6749 aww I'm so pleased! Best wishes for the future - I'm sure you'll do great! 😁
Can you please send me the link?
mine was called Foundation Diploma : Fashion Portfolio
Where did you buy the bag for your design and what is it called?
It's just called an art portfolio case - here's a link to a similar one - www.cassart.co.uk/display/portfolios_and_presentation/portfolios_presentation/mapac_quartz_portfolio.htm?productid=682&gclid=CjwKCAjw3azoBRAXEiwA-_64OrhAcKkkLegcKDxbTm3OFYjAv1K4_1EQkIccRWWOsishjOvEfkuCPRoCYuUQAvD_BwE
Nice!... I watched this impressive video...
Hi did you use normal paper or glossy paper?
Hey, I used normal thicker paper :)
Hi! Did you put your portfolio in a box or in a folder with sleeves for the interview? Which is better? :)
I put mine in a folder with sleeves because then it's really easy for them to flick through because they look at so many.
hey ! I'm trying for MA in fashion, I've made a digital one. Do they prefer lots of research and manual (hand written ) portfolio!?
From my experience they do but again I'm talking from about 7 years ago so I'm not sure if it's changed since then. Maybe try to scan in some research pages to add to your digital portfolio. Have a look at the portfolio guidelines they have now and see what they suggest.
@@EmmaRave thanks!
Wow great work

Sorry I don't know
is it necessary to do foundation for BA?
most people that I knew had done a foundation but it's definitely possible to get in without one. You just have to have a really good portfolio :)
Nice work

Beautiful work👌🏽Thank you it was very useful to me
Thumbs up from Iran 🇮🇷
This is your collage fashion portfolio
This is a mixture of my college and university foundation degree portfolio
was wondering how do u get your ideas?
As in the designs? I look at the theme I'm working with and the patterns, shapes and structure that I can see. Then I look at the texture and colours. I start to draw some rough sketches of what I can see and start to draw it on/around a picture of a mannequin. Sometimes I'll look at previous catwalk images to get inspiration as well
Emma Ravens oh I see! That makes alot of sense now. Thank you for explaining :)
So this was for you to get in to uni?
Yes to get into London College of Fashion for a BA course (university qualification)
@@EmmaRave so it's just about technique and not quantity.. lol I'm freaking out about my portfolio 😂😂😂
@@thesassyharley8912 Yes I would say they definitely look at the quality over quantity. You still need a decent size portfolio but just make sure they is a little bit of every technique in there. Hope it goes well!
why do u choose fashion college??
because at that time, that was what I was passionate about :)
Hello ~am ak young fashion design I want design different type of fabric
I'm not really sure what you mean?
What are research pages?
Just pages where there are lots of sketches, photographs, fabric samples etc
@@EmmaRave are they based on one big theme?
@@khushinashine2775 Usually between one or two themes. You don't really want it too random. It will be good if they all connect together
Unintentional ASMR

Emma Ravens she meant that your voice was really beautiful and nice to listen to ASMR is about satisfying sounds and pictures
Your Portfolio is amazing! I was wondering were you bought your bag? And what size of drawing paper?
I actually bought my portfolio from London College of Fashion itself but I'm sure you can get them from any good art shops depending where you live. The drawing size paper I had was A1. Thanks so much for watching :)
