Really like the series. Here's one: Dizzy Gillespie's Big 4. Dizzy, Joe Pass, Ray Brown, and Mickey Roker. Dizzy is blazing in this session. 1975 Pablo Records. Pablo Records is a treasure trove of well recorded, excellent, and affordable jazz.
I enjoyed your presentation and find this price range range is a sweet spot for us collectors and appreciators of fine music. You are spot on mentioning Quincy Jones as his output is huge. I found Quincy's soundtrack LPs to be quite rewarding musically and are for the most part $10 or less. I've also found success investigating musicians that have played a supporting role on other popular and pricy albums. For example, I recently found a copy of Charlie Mariano's, A Jazz Portrait of Charlie Mariano" on Regina Records for $15 in a local stereo shop. The recording was done in July 1963, six months after Charlie played on Mingus' Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, which is a record selling for over $20, if you can even find it. That is what makes this hoppy so fun.
Thanks. Doesn’t it just? And I agree about Mariano, he’s one to look for. He didn’t record that often as a leader but those records where he did are worth seeking out.
Very nice! I have that Quincy Jones date on a reissue that combines it with “This Is How I Feel about Jazz.” The arrangements, musicians, and performances all reward listening.
Sonny Stitt - Saxophone Supremacy The Brothers Candoli Most of the MJQ canon Gerry Mulligan - Jeru and What Is There To Say Most of JJ Johnson's best Columbia releases, like Blue Trombone The Mastersounds records on Pacific Jazz/World Pacific, including The King and I Most of the early Previn/Manne records on Contemporary
I have a suggested title, which I know you like: JJ Johnson: First Place, on Columbia. I know you like it because I happened to see that you made a comment about it on Discogs when I added it to my collection.
Being Scottish I love a good bargain.I got a few yesterday at a local record fair, pick of the bunch was an OG US white label promo of Arthur Blythe ~ Lennox Avenue Breakdown for £15.00 on Columbia. Slightly outside your parameters being from 1979 but after listening to it,and I hadn't heard it before I was blown away both by the music and the sound quality.I believe you can get this even cheaper in the US
I love early arthur blythe, Lennox Ave breakdown is a really interesting one, not as free as his stuff on India Navigation but still plenty to unpick, great recomendation!
Being in NJ there are several good shops with a high turn rate of VG to better $20 or below records. You could feature Pablo records. Normally top artists, well recorded, and under your limit. How about a cool graphic on 5 under 20.
Now Im gonna look for these records, Thanks. If anyone is looking for a bargain waaay under 20$ check out anything from the George Shearing Quintet, usually well under 10$.The most un sought after musician in the Jazz world IMO.
Walter Perkins on Vee Jay Early John Handy on Roulette The Birdland Stars on Tour vols 1 & 2 on Roulette Herb Geller Plays on Emarcy Lots of Johnny Smith on Roost
Amazing list here, I own and can vouch for most of them!
Haha, Friendly Giant reference! We are contemporaries 😅
Indeed! I was going to make a reference to rocking chairs etc but there wasn’t the space lol.

Very true, though to date I’ve only dabbled. But that’s a great lineup!

Yes, he had a sophisticated touch from the very start.

Seconded - I have many of these. Intrigued by the Stitt suggestion, as that’s one I haven’t heard.
Awesome Video!!! Atlantic Records has a plethora of Jazz Records that are affordable with the big Jazz names We all love.
Thanks. They do! and had a strong catalogue long after other independents had been bought out or had given up on jazz.

Haha! Well what can I say, I love it!

That’s one I haven’t heard. But based on your endorsement sounds like something to explore. Blythe isn’t a musician I know too well.

Cool graphics may be outside my skill set! Though there’s nowhere to go but up I suppose.

What’s your favourite release of his?

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews correction: Birdland on RCA, not Roulette, as I thought.
