My family has no Indonesian roots whatsoever, I am from the Netherlands, but due to our (sadly) colonial past, there is a lot of Indonesian food available, and my Dutch mother and grandmother would make nasi goreng often. It really holds a special place in my heart, even though the ingredients they used likely differ from original nasi goreng. Thanks for the recipe and making me remember those times from my childhood! :)

Hello there colonizer. (It's a joke guys, it's just a freaking joke. Chill out, unclench your buttholes. Now, back to what I'm gonna say.) I don't know if you know this but there's a song called Geef Mij Maar Nasi Goreng by Wieteke Van Dort that tells a story about her being repatriated to the Netherlands in the 50s and how she missed Indonesian foods mainly Nasi Goreng.

Indonesian here, adding directly the shrimp paste is rare. But we usually add sambal and that has a bit of shrimp paste inside. But other than that, this version of nasi goreng looks lovely!

The funny thing is not all Indonesian nasi goreng use kecap manis.. I born in region with no kecap manis in nasi goreng. Only chili for red color and spicy, shrimp paste, garlic and red onion. You can add any kind of protein you like.
Maybe you can try this one.. The fragrance of shrimp paste and chillies will bring you to another level. 😆😆😆

You're such a natural at this and I can tell you're doing this because it's your passion, and not just some sponsor pushing and making you crank out videos (unlike other channels). Oh iya.. Awalnya saya mengetik begitu.

You completely right about kecap manis, we even add a bit of kecap manis when cooking the hottest spiciest nasi goreng such as nasi goreng gila or mercon.

For best taste of *Kecap Manis* try to spread kecap manis side of nasi goreng on pan with high fire until it smoke (become caramelized) then mixed with nasi goreng, guarantee taste will more than just spread on top of nasi goreng while cooked it

Love your recipe, Marion! Next time when you make an indonesian fried rice, for a "cheat" version just use sambal oelek with kecap manis and you're set! Sambal oelek usually already has the shrimp paste in it (so you don't have to worry to dissolve it) and kecap manis will make the sambal less spicy. Oh and lots, lots of shallots. Since our shallots are smaller here, we tend to use 1:3 garlic and shallots ratio. But since yours are bigger, maybe 1 medium shallots to 2 garlic is enough (this is because we don't use onion here, the key is to cook the garlic and shallots in margarine / butter) 🥰

Hi there. Basically Indonesian fried rice has lot of varieties. You can add something to strengthen the flavors as the game changer. Marion adds a shrimp paste. I usually add rendang or sambal ikan cakalang (also from Indonesia), which makes the nasi goreng more spicy. Good work, Marion. Also, I like your earrings ❤️

First of all, delicious fried rice Marion. Secondly, I had to have a plate of food infront of me whenever I come across your cooking because they're always mouth watering. Thirdly, I really don't mind you adding the MSG because regular people use it for that extra flavour kick. 😄😄
Another great dish done. Thanks Marion from Fiji.

Shrimp paste and kecap manis we get in the UK is incredibly strong. Use both sparingly. I've made Nasi Goreng that was inedible cos it was ridiculously fishy and salty.

I've made at least five recipes!!! All yummy. I purchased a cast iron pan from Amazon preseasoned with two short handles on both sides and it came with a glass lid with a rubber edge. I highly recommend it. This wok she is using must be used on a regular basis or it becomes moldy...per Marion. She is the only one I watch. I just do not make my dishes as hot. Lol Enjoy!!!

Girl, we must always have our nasi goreng with kerupuk and acar, that is what make it Indonesian. Shrimp paste straight, nope we don't do that, we roast our shrimp paste first, make into a sambel and then use that for the fried rice. You forgot to incorporate the egg(s) too. Also, shallots dear, not onions, shallots are way more fragrant and flavorful for an Indonesian Nasi Goreng. Make the shallots, garlic and chilli fragrant first then sear and stir fry the protein, then add the eggs, then when all is fragrant, rice and the rest you got it right. 😉 Also, Indonesians don't really eat friend rice with sambel, the spice level is always predetermined before hand. If it is still not spicy enough, chopped Thai chilies is best. 😉😉

Miss M, sometimes when I'm browning beef like that, I don't seem to be able to get a nice sear when it starts to release liquid. I will then use a paper towel to soak up the liquid. is the flavor I lose worth the exchange for the texture I'm looking for?

Actually stock cubes, maggi or any variation is MSG ! so she's just having another type of MSG (not ve-tsin) but another form.. I really am sure how this dish , with all the sauces/shrimp paste, is identical in taste if she didnt put that stock cube. :)
