No damage to the barges or dam. They let the water flow slow down a little, moved the platform back, and went back to work. No big deal really but it made for a good news story. Those are Shugart barges and they are not typical barges. They are designed to support their load while floating or as a ground supported "mud mat" and they do not need to be fully supported to carry the load on the top. That 4 barge arrangement will support 150 tons so this is a very small load for the platform and the little bit of weight over the edge of the dam isn't a problem. There are two spuds holding the work platform in place. My guess is that the reservoir bottom was just too soft and the increased water flow caused them to drag until they found the dam's foundation. Those are the two red spudwells on the upstream corners. The spuds are all the way down with lifting eyes on the tops of the spuds barely visible.

Excellent explanation for a dramatic video. Easy to see the 4 barge setup and the two spuds definitely in the down position. Highly unlikely to go over just looks bad. Still has another 120 ton capacity or so too, probably not going to buckle either. However without your insight, think we all figured that CAT looked doomed!

i could get it off with another person if they could get me on it.. use excavator to push back off dam then get it over to shore with pusher and excavator keeping it away from edge.. then you just go back up stream

I’ve always heard this structure referred to as a weir, not a dam. For reference the weir crosses the Savannah river just below(south) of Stevens Creek. Stevens Creek is upstream of the weir, several hundred yards on the right(South Carolinas side of the Savannah River). Stevens Creek feeds into the Savannah River. There is another weir a mile or so downstream that also crosses the Savannah River at the Savannah Pavilion (located on the Georgia side of the Savannah River). .
A weir is a dam with a single function - maintaining an exact water height. This appears to be doing that job, so it is probably a weir.
In some areas it's known as a "low head dam". Some people call them "drowning machines" for the deadly standing waves that form at their bases. "Weir" seems to be the most common name though.
I have grown weary of this discussion.
