Yes, perfect casting. Diana Quick as well. Someone I feel sorry for is Jane Asher, she had to play a character which is so far removed from natural self. Phoebe Nicholls was so believable. A totally stellar cast.
I totally agree. He`s MY Sebastian, and will always be, as Jeremy Irons will always be Charles to me. More Bollinger anyone...?!? Here`s to great books/scripts and excellent acting! Cheers.
I'm so glad they made the switch. Jeremy Irons recorded an audiobook of Brideshead Revisited, and the only thing in it that I'm not fond of is the scratchy childish voice he used for Sebastian-- I think Andrews' urbane smirking fits much better. And Irons is a wonderful Charles Ryder. You sense that longing for love behind his somewhat cold exterior, and his rare smiles have such impact.
Several years ago, I found myself the only late lunch diner - except for one other person, in one of my favorite West Village restaurants. I ordered lunch - just in time, before the 4PM cut-off, then looked over at the other diner, there. It was Jeremy Irons, reading a book, or - pretending to, terrified perhaps, that I might start a conversation with him. But, no...Villagers do not do this. Instead, when he glanced up and our eyes met, I nodded, slightly - and busied myself with my journal. He visibly relaxed, and went on reading, eating his lunch. Thank goodness, the man was afforded some peace for a time. I have celebs in the family, and know how difficult it is sometimes, to do the simplest things, try and go places without being accosted. Fame, is often inconvenient.
In Britain the golden rule is, if you ever see a celebrity, don't let on that you recognise them. Don't look at them and certainly don't go up and talk to them.
You're a better person than I am!! He's one of my absolute favorite actors ever. I wouldn't have been able to stop myself from saying hello. In his heyday he was the sexiest man on screen.
No mention of it here but the producers must surely have known that Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews had been cast together in a previous period drama. They played close friends Frank Tregear and Lord Silverbridge in Simon Raven's 1974 BBC adaptation of The Pallisers.
Phrases like "brave young chap" I SO yearn to hear in my travels around the United States, but it all seems to have perished with the generation that helped raise me from childhood. Hence my desire for English (British) literature / video material.
lol u wouldn't find it in fucking england pal its all MacDonald's and american English. england is a dead shitcuntry and the sooner Scotland breaks off.the better
Anthony and Jeremy were great. I recommend you watch Margin Call to see what I think is Jeremy's best performance. Did Anthony get an Emmy for playing Sebastian Flyte?
Sebastian was underwritten in the novel, and so I think of Anthony Andrews as co-creator of this character with Waugh. If Jeremy Irons played Sebastian, we'd have a completely different character. (For what that character might have been like, listen to Irons's brilliant reading of the audiobook. Andrews' Sebastian is virile by comparison, and in my mind, that much more compelling and enchanting.)
Thanks heaven Jeremy re read the novel. Charles is the authors voice, the voice of Waugh. Sebastian only really figures in the lighter first half, with the superficial but glamorous theme of the aristocracy. The real messages of the novel are in the darker second half; love, faith, redemption and the hard choices necessary.
Strange how this says Jeremy wanted to play Sebastian, in the Brideshead reuinon interview from 2011 on Radio 4 Jeremy said he'd not long played a part like Sebastian so was chasing after Charles
Saw Irons a couple of years ago in a Long Day's Journey Into Night. The man has forgotten how to be a stage actor. As someone else suggested here, he has spent the majority of his career being either a villain or a pratt.
What was Olivier's reaction to playing Lord Marchmain rather than Charles Ryder's obnoxious father? I feel I heard he would have rather played the malevolent father.
Someone please, WHO makes the furniture in these videos? I love the styling! Can not find it anywhere in California. . . . . . . .like many things that England, or anyone in Europe, would see as style. Sad really.
God bless the person who chose Anthony Andrews for Sebastian
I really couldn't imagined them playing the opposite characters-they definitely got it right to have Andrews as Sebastian and Irons as Charles

AND I FELT IN LOVE WITH BOTH OF THEM...
I can't imagine another Sebastian Flyte than Anthony Andrews
absolutely. He IS Sebastian.
I can. Michael York.
Perhaps a young Jude Law...
I totally agree. He`s MY Sebastian, and will always be, as Jeremy Irons will always be Charles to me. More Bollinger anyone...?!? Here`s to great books/scripts and excellent acting! Cheers.
@@LadyOfShaIott I thought Jude Law's Bosie Douglas in 'Wilde' was reminiscent of Anthony Andrews' Sebastian Flyte both in looks and mannerisms.
The casting was perfect! Both actors were brilliant .

They absolutely got it right by casting Jeremy Irons as Charles and Anthony Andrews as Sebastian. Both were perfect.
They were beautiful perfection. So very handsome in their own unique way. I also loved Danger UXB. ❤️

Mamma miaa 2 degli uomini più belli e affascinanti di tutti i tempi my goddd
Anthony Andrews is Lord Sebastian Flyte as Jeremy Irons is Charles Ryder. They're perfects.
Would anyone suggest me other videos about the making of BR 1981? I love to view more videos like this one.

Both men were perfect for their roles. Jeremy irons must have seen that.
i love anthony andrews:)

Andrews was nominated for an Emmy. He won BAFTA and Golden Globe Best Actors for Sebastian. (Sorry for the reply three years late.)

that was a close call...anthony andrews ...the chosen one

I can’t imagine them doing the opposite role, they were so perfect😭

Wasn’t Danger UXB produced AFTER Brideshead?
"Maybe Jeremy could play Charles Ryder" ... ?? I'll say! ...How about this? Maybe he could even "immortalize" him ... for better or for worse
Where did you get this material from? Where can we find this behind the scenes documentary?
Saw Irons a couple of years ago in a Long Day's Journey Into Night. The man has forgotten how to be a stage actor. As someone else suggested here, he has spent the majority of his career being either a villain or a pratt.
Either Charles Ryder is a very "wooden" character, or Jeremy is a very very "wooden" actor ..
Where is this from?
If Jeremy Irons had played 'Sebastian' I wonder if he would have died his hair blond like Andrews did? Somehow I can't see Irons with blond hair.
@carolynargabright8132 Anthony Andrews is blond

Jeremy
My YT channel is not just about Merlin, I have other interests as well.
They were both excellent in their roles albeit a bit too old for the parts. I believe they both admitted as much.
