    People love to talk about Trae’s defense but if you actually watch the hawks you can see he at least tries and buys in on the defensive end he just lacks the physical capabilities to stop some of these guys, my biggest and really only problem with Trae is his shot selection, he takes some wild shots and especially loves hero ball 3s when it isn’t always necessary

      But man I remember when I saw TY play, I thought he's hair is weird but ok. I don't keep up with bball so don't really care all that much. But then you start to see TY's pickup and training videos outside of regular season, you get a gauge for how good he really is. His play style is really nice and he's doing it all at the top level which is nuts considering how good Jeremy Lin was and now he's playing in China. So to do what Trae is doing for his height and weight is nuts.
      The NBA is extremely competitive and TY is dominating it. That's scary if you think about it.
      Really the coolest thing about watching trae pllay is for his shear bball IQ because it goes to show how much more important it is beyond all else.

    I think a big thing people get mixed up about Trae is the "inefficient" part because they see his FG%
    when in reality he's above league average in 3PT%, FT%, Mid Range%, and TS%
    the only thing he's truly inefficient at in scoring is his finishing at the rim and that can be attributed to his size, the paint being clogged because of the way his team is built and other things
    Donovan Mitchell has a career 45/37/84 splits on 57% TS
    Trae Young has a career 44/36/87 splits on 58% TS
    difference between them is Mitchell is very crafty at the rim so his FG% is usually higher than Trae and he has more strength, giving him that ability to use the contact to his advantage

    • @shawnandzeb
      @shawnandzeb 3 месяца назад +17

      People bring up defense when literally most star guards with his volume are bad defenders too
      and then people like to bring up turnovers when all high usage guys have high turnover numbers
      Steve Nash and Magic Johnson have both led the league in turnovers multiple times, that's the price of being an offensive engine who has the ball more than anyone else on the floor

    • @shawnandzeb
      @shawnandzeb 3 месяца назад +11

      i wish people would bring up real flaws in Trae's game like his rim finishing and iso scoring, then that's actually valid criticisms
      because he's good in the clutch on offense and defense surprisingly (i have stats and clips to back this claim up)
      he's a great playmaker, above average shooter, and has elevated mid level rosters to high level offenses in terms of PPG and offensive rating

    • @6manYT
      @6manYT  3 месяца назад +9

      Precisely, Like with those numbers I showed from 2020, Trae is more efficient than Tatum and Mitchell from a TS percentage scoring more points per game. Trae Young has had a competent defense for one season of his career. It was the '21 season when Clint Capela balled out and finished 6th in DPOY voting. Just so happens that the Hawks went to the conference finals that year. Capela has declined every season since and so has the Hawks' win percentage.
    Trae is a walking top 5 offense. He's never played with another all-NBA caliber player, and the Hawks consistently finish at the top of the league in offense. Surround this guy with defenders that can make an open shot and I guarantee the Hawks will be right back in the mix in the East.

      What’s so frustrating is that the FO has somewhat tried to get those type of guys - that’s why they got hunter and DJ in the first place, but both of their defensive impact got worse once they were in Atlanta.

    Confirmation bias. So many analysts and pundits had Trae pegged to be a bust but he’s been putting egg on their faces. So now when they analyze Trae they are viewing him through a negative lens and highlighting his negatives and minimizing his positives. Skip Bayless got caught doing it by Paul Pierce when he was comparing him to Luka when it hit him that they are the same player. He tried to talk about his usage and turnovers only to have to admit Luka was basically the same. He tried to talk about Trae shooting a lot of 3’s at a relatively bad rate only to be immediately reminded that Luka does too. Then he tried to say “but the defense” only having to be reminded that Luka is a cone on defense. Because people said he would be a bust they are doing mental gymnastics to make it so.

Its doing all the other things on top of that, which is truly valuable in the league, thats why it gets pointed out that he doesnt do the other things. And before you try it, those flaws get pointed out in other stars like doncic too. If you are comparing 2 players with similar offensive stats, that dont play defense, you go with the taller one... because this is basketball.

      Calling them the same player is just straight up wrong, though. Luka is a much more versatile and efficient scorer while also shooting at a higher volume. He's so much more deadly inside the arc and in the paint than Trae. He's also an elite rebounder compared to Trae.

      Luka’s defense got a lot better this year and is 6’7 230 lbs. Saying he’s a cone is a parroted take you got from some dumbass stat like “blow-by rate” when the Mavs defense is built around funneling guys to the paint. He led the playoffs in steals btw. Luka .382 on 10.6 threes compared to .373 on 8.7 attempts. Luka .487 on 23.6 att, Trae .430 (lol) on 18.7 att. Luka a better shooter and defender. Production does not equal impact. Averaging 10 assists per game is great but averaging over 4 turnovers per game is bad, better to average 8/3 or 7/2. His shot selection is poor. He isn't good at playing off-ball offense. He is bad at defense.
    Hawks fans go on about their top 10 or top 5 offense, when they have one of the very worst defenses in the league. That is why they cannot contend. And yet instead of admitting Trae Young plays a big part in that, the Hawks want to blame coaches and other players.
    Look past the box scores and the highlight reels. Eye test shows he is not a well rounded or versatile player, and he is not particularly efficient even at what he does best. Various advanced metrics like win shares per 48, box plus minus, VORP, etc show that he is not truly elite, for example Al Horford as a Hawk had better advanced metrics.
    If the Hawks can build a team full of good defenders and off-ball offensive threats around him, it could work very well, covering up his weaknesses and improving his efficiency. But that could be financially or schematically challenging. And his weaknesses will still exist which opponents will exploit especially in deep playoff runs.
    I'm not saying he's a bad player, but I do think he is not as good or impactful of a player as his points and assists per game suggest.

    I don’t really know ow what it is either, but if I had to infer why his value may not be higher than DJ is maybe because with Trae skill set in today game there are already multiple guards and even forwards that can do what he does and I think his size and height and lack of defense (all together) doesn’t help him too well. Vs someone like DJ that can play multiple positions for you and at a height where it’s possible with his skill set on offense and defense.
    Another thing I can probably say is why people may find him “overrated” is him being on an underwhelming team and bad situation (which is not his fault at all) and maybe because he’s not really surrounded with the best players for him to hide more of his weaknesses and not have to carry such a heavy load.

    From Trae's time playing with Dejounte, I think he learned to play the passing lanes a lot better. Made him look better defensively, his problem is that he gets lost on defense too often. There are too many possessions when he's just not guarding anyone. It forces the rest of the team into last minute closeouts and someone's always open!

    defense is limited by his physical attributes. this can be made up for with proper roster construction but the hawks front office did not identify the right problem to address. they should have traded for rudy gobert in the 2023 off season when it was looking like the wolves made a mistake trading for him and realized they needed a better point guard. gobert would pair with trae very well because of his defensive anchoring and his lob catching radius. the hawks could have run a drop defensive scheme and funneled opposing players into gobert like how the jazz used to when they had him with spida.

    As a person who doesn't buy the Trae hype, I'll respond.
    Trae isn't a very efficient shooter. He shoots high volume but isn't great from 3 and really struggles close to the basket. He doesn't have the ability to score efficient shots near the rim like SGA or Luka do.
    He gets a lot of assists but he also gets a lot of turnovers. He also dominates the ball and often waits and looks for the pass which will get him the assist as opposed to just getting the ball moving. The best teams shift the ball constantly until there's a good shot. Trae needs to move the ball more and be less heliocentric.
    He's really small but also has poor length. He doesn't play with athleticism on defense. His efforts on defense have improved but I still see him take possessions off. He also switches off a lot and loses his man a lot. This is reflected in the defensive rankings where he's still ranked really low despite him putting in more effort. His defense has improved but it's still bad. He's small so he can't help it but the hawks chose to build their team around him knowing his weaknesses.
    He doesn't move enough off the ball which negates part of his offensive impact. He can't be shifted inside as he has no size. So when he doesn't have the ball he just kinda hangs out at the 3 point line, becoming useless.
    The league is moving towards more versatile balanced and cohesive teams. Boston won the championship because they had five guys who moved the ball, didn't dominate the ball, could switch and play D and could score at the rim and with 3s. That's not Trae. Maybe it's not Brunson either! But it's also not Trae. There's a reason why coaches, GMs, the national team etc. don't rate him. He's closer to LaMelo Ball than many of his fans are willing to admit. He's alone in his flaws, but the hawks aren't going to win championships by pointing out other team's flaws.

    There's something that is kind of hard to quantify (although usage sort of shows it), and it's how much offensive oxygen you chew up. Trae will put up great numbers, but other than setting people up for lobs, he's not going to let anyone else cook. And with him never being off ball, it becomes predictable in a series. @@kj22jr1 reaching.
      Let's break this down.
      When you rebuilding, you usually don't have a championship team or a championship coach because if you do you're competing 1 and two if you have an excellent coach he costs money so most teams cut ties with the coach in a buyout.
      That's why Budenholzer left,he didn't want to be here and the Hawks didn't want to pay him.
      So usually when a team in a full rebuild they usually get a young coach to develop players and usually it's a first time coach for the cheap.. He's usually a place holder.Like a vet qb when you have a rookie qb. Like Mariotta in the nfl.
      So Lloyd Pierece didnt count and McMillan won more playoff series with the Hawks that one year than all his other season combined always was a playoff first round loser.
      John Collins was gonna be gone anyway because they drafted Jalen Johnson who can actually DRIBBLE AND CREATE HIS OWN SHOT.
      Now let's get to Murray. Remember when they made the trade. The GM who was making all the moves RESIGNED Because he vetoed the trade,said Trae and Murray a be a bad fit, said Murray wasn't worth those picks,and said he was trying to trade for AD that's when AD stock was low,then he tried to trade Collins for KP and Dallas wanted to do it,but the FO like Collins but he had drafted JJ and wanted KP at the five.

    Too much surface level stats and narratives. He’s good at running the spread pick and roll, that’s it. And he gets to run it all game, so of course he gets pts + asts. Once he runs into a team like the Heat in 2022 that has the personnel and game plan to defend the spread pick and roll, he literally becomes a liability, and gives the worst performance in NBA history from a “star” player. You also can’t just run the same spread pick and roll all year and be a stat compiler and then suddenly be like “HELP” and expect your team to run more team oriented offense all of a sudden and expect it to work at a high enough level against a team that’s played a more team oriented way all year and is a well oiled machine at doing it. That’s the Catch-22 with him though, he’s only effective playing one way so you have to let him play that one way.

    Trae Ypung is so much better than hali if you ask me. Hali is one of the most currently overrated players in the NBA. He’s so pathetic on D, but the worst part is how soft his ego is. I was embarrased for him in the playoffs, the way he was silent while doing nothing but then when he started to break out of his slump, instead of acting like he had been there before he started talking all of that weird junk to Donte and the Knicks like “you can’t guard me!”
    It was literally the most obvious example of someone who’s been so in their head and doubting themsleves, so when they finally play well they just get SO happy because they were worried they couldn’t hack it, the like get overwhelmed with joy and start just going crazy and saying things they obviously don’t beleive. It was SO cringe. Maybe a simpler way to say it was that it appeared as if he was trying to convince himself he was as good as he was saying he is. Idk it just totally turned me off from him.
    And as far as Trae goes, I feel like people just got bored with how good he is, until he is able to make the finals he will just be another young victim of his own success too early on like JT and JB were.
    I swear if Trae had the exact season he had last year, but he had never averaged over 20 and 9 before, everyone woulda been like “wow!! What he is doing is so crazy!!!” But since he’s been like 27 and 9 since the second half of his first year, everyone just overlooks it. But it’s so idiotic. If anything we should be even more amazed that this dude is like the only modern player ever to produce these numbers as career averages. And with him, it’s literally been every year of his career( I guess minus his rookie year, but that year he was amazing too) as opposed to some guys with amazing career averages but only because some huge later seasons bumped up the numbers. Trae really been going for 25+ and 10 since he first started to figure shit out.

    Numbers don't tell the whole story. People hardly give effort in defense or defenders are very much restricted. Playoffs is the real deal. Trae got one conference finals appearance and that's impressive, but that was 3 yrs ago, he hasn't done much since, and that doesn't help his case at all. Also his foul baiting was horrendous, I'd say it's similar to prime James Harden and Joel Embiid and we all/majority of us hated that, the hate is very much so understandable

      Brunson twerk fouled bait all playoffs and NBA praised him for it…the League changed the rules to slow Trae down after the ECF run

    He’s high volume, yet inefficient. He needs the ball in his hands 100% of the time. Awful off ball player.
