Exactly. You can't initialize then you can't get a drive letter to scan for errors and fix them. Worst yet, it seems these Fix-It websites, videos and blogs are all giving this same bad information. I have this issue on a WD Elements 25A2. My system can detect the device as a WD Elements, but cannot initialize without the fatal error. I can hear this external drive start and stop, and can feel that it is spinning. Probably an issue with the hardware that controls the drive. I'll probably open it up and have a look since it doesn't work anyway. I personally think this drive got a lot of use as a DVR storage and was located is a spot that could get pretty warm. Bet it overheated and just is worn out to the max.

Hi there, If your external hard disk is not showing up in disk management, it's possible that there is an issue with the connection between the hard disk and your computer. Check the power supply. Try data recovery software. Download Recoverit here: bit.ly/3ZoowNK If none of these steps work, it's possible that the hard disk has failed and may need to be replaced.

Hi there, thank you for your question! In case the device manager can detect the drive but it lacks a drive letter, it could be due to damaged or corrupted partition information. You can resolve this issue by using the Disk Management tool in Windows to assign a drive letter to the affected drive. To start, right-click on the Start menu and select Disk Management, locate the drive in the list of drives and right-click on it, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths", click the "Add" button and assign a drive letter to the drive, and then click "OK" to save the changes. If the drive still can't be initialized after assigning a drive letter, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced.
Hi anyone have any help on fixing a fatal device hardware error on a brand new, just opened, unformatted, uninitialized hard drive that has no letter attached to it because I can't initialize, format, or assign a drive letter as I keep getting a fatal device hardware error and I can't scan it as my pc hasn't the faintest idea what to scan due to not being able to assign it as anything.
For those unable to get their pc to read the drive: I managed to fix this by plugging my drive into my laptop and reformatting it from its original format (exFAT) to the format my pc apparently needs (NTFS). Then I plugged it back into the pc, waited a minute, and voila the drive is now being read! This might not be the problem for everyone, but it's what was happening for me. I didn't need to assign a new letter, as that was already done before the drive was shipped to me. Again ymmv.
I don't wanna lose my data, and mine is "RAW" and i wanna turn it to NTFS without losing data when formatting, is it possible ?@@youlleatamuffinandlikeit4596

i tried cmd and chkdsk and this will show "Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges or the disk may be locked by another process. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode and make sure the disk is unlocked." anyone knows how to fix this?
Method 1 Drive Status is OK still not accessible Still giving Fatal Hardware error Method 2 Useless (No Disrespect) Still giving Fatal Hardware error Method 3 Drive not Visible under THIS PC Method 4 DRive letter is Unknown
Hi there, thank you for your question! The best approach is to replace the affected drive as soon as possible, especially for arrays that provide no redundancy like RAID 0. For arrays with redundancy, the RAID controller can rebuild the array on the new drive using the parity information or the mirrored copy of the data. However, if the rebuild fails due to too many bad sectors, the data may be lost. It's crucial to monitor the disk drives in the array regularly for signs of failure, including bad sectors, using monitoring software or third-party tools. Repairing bad sectors on a drive in an array is generally not recommended, as it can cause issues with the RAID controller and other disk drives in the array.
If you cannot access the disk through FE and you cannot initialize in Disk Management, run hardware diagnostics in BIOS. Also you can try to get into Windows Recovery to run disk repair. I could not initialize a computer’s C drive and I fixed it by running diagnostics in BIOS.
Hi there, thank you for your question! "Cannot open volume for direct access" may indicate that the disk is currently being used or locked by another program or process. To resolve this issue, you can try closing all open programs, restarting your computer in Safe Mode, running the chkdsk command with the /f parameter in Command Prompt. If it doesn't work, the disk may be physically damaged or faulty, and you may need to replace it.
Urm...what about when you have an SSD that's actually corrupted and is now showing 16MB via a USB M.2 enclosure extension on a donor laptop from a previously full 512GB ?

Hi there, thank you for your question! check if the HDD is properly connected and powered on. You can try connecting it to another computer or port to check if it's recognized. If the issue persists, try updating the HDD driver from the device manager. If that doesn't work, you can run a disk check and repair any errors using CHKDSK command in Command Prompt

The only thing I was able to do from this tutorial was step 1 and it shows status "OK" but all the other information is completely useless for my case. Any fix to this issue?
Hi there,
If your external hard disk is not showing up in disk management, it's possible that there is an issue with the connection between the hard disk and your computer. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
Check the cable and connections.
Check if the hard disk is spinning up.
Check if the hard disk is recognized on another computer.
Check the power supply.
Try data recovery software. Download Recoverit here: bit.ly/3ZoowNK
If none of these steps work, it's possible that the hard disk has failed and may need to be replaced.
If the external drive has a fatal error... I want to recover all of the files, why do you only talk about recovering deleted files?
In the video, method 1: disk check OK. Then method 2 acts like the disk is already initialized. That's the problem. I can't initialize the disk because of the fatal device hardware error. Smh I can't format if it's not initialized. Guess I'll go scour google for an answer for another couple hours.
any luck dude?
None of this worked. Bought the app but it doesnt see the drive in question. tried dskchk but it cant access the drive in question. huge waste of time...

My computer detects the ext drive but the Recoverit software (free trial) doesn’t. I can’t initialize the disk because of ‘…fatal hardware error’. So back at square one.

I have a weird problem. The device manager, etc. sees a drive, but does not have a drive letter, and can't initliaze. what can I do?
Thanks
Hi there, thank you for your question! In case the device manager can detect the drive but it lacks a drive letter, it could be due to damaged or corrupted partition information. You can resolve this issue by using the Disk Management tool in Windows to assign a drive letter to the affected drive. To start, right-click on the Start menu and select Disk Management, locate the drive in the list of drives and right-click on it, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths", click the "Add" button and assign a drive letter to the drive, and then click "OK" to save the changes. If the drive still can't be initialized after assigning a drive letter, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced.
none of the method works.
Again ymmv.
Hi there,
Could you please elaborate on your question? We're glad to help.
@@RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware I literally did not ask a question. Good to know ya'll don't read. 🙄
I don't wanna lose my data, and mine is "RAW" and i wanna turn it to NTFS without losing data when formatting, is it possible ?@@youlleatamuffinandlikeit4596
I also experienced a similar thing where my external HDD couldn't be read on a desktop PC but could be opened and read on a laptop. will the same method work for me?
Thanks so much, it works. Method 3 help me in repairing.
I couldn't locate my external drive in the list of recoverit what would be the reason
Thanks very much. Method 4. Work just fine with external harddrive.

So my issue is I wanted to replace my 250gb ssd with a new 1tb ssd and I wanted to clone my 250gb. I fitted the new 1tb ssd to an external case which is meant to be for this purpose. I then plugged it in went to disk management so I could initialize the new ssd drive but then get the fatal error message, what do I do?
this is pretty much exactly my situation and experience. Im using a crucial m.2 ssd.
@@fattireale75 took mine to a computer repair shop and got them to do it in the end and it works fine
@@anthonywhatmore-ross8538 by chance, did they say how they were able to clone or at least partion it?
@@fattireale75 sorry no but said was a straight forward easy job.
i tried cmd and chkdsk and this will show
"Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges or
the disk may be locked by another process.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode
and make sure the disk is unlocked."

Run cmd as administrator

Method 1

Method 4

How about disk drive in an array, how are we going to fix bad sectors?
Unable to repair, a screen showing "Cannot open volume for direct access"
If you have tried all the steps in the video you may need to replace your SSD.
@@RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware ok thanks
This is useless 🤣🤣 you can't chkdsk a drive that isn't detected to begin for which you don't know the drive letter cause...fatal device hardware error 🤣. And then a software sales pitch.
Nah I used a completely free dos command base recovery method
Your assumption is that the drive is visible and accesssible. It is not.
did not help me tried ecvery method I am not sure what is up woo word I am pretty sure the hardrive is old
I can access mine using linux but windows fails to open it

I have the same issue on my WD HDD. What should I do? Even I'm not even able to set any backup. Sometimes shows a fatal device hardware error and sometimes it opens all the folders and even at the end plays the video as well. But within minutes shows not respond and my laptop starts hanging. I'm getting frustrated with this issue, I have all the study material inside and my exam is in November. I need help if anyone can know how to proceed further without backup please tell me, it's a humble request I need to fix that issue for my exam.
Same goes with my external WD ssd, yesterday it worked perfectly fine not until on this day my laptop didn't detected any drives that was plugged in for some reason, idk why but it only notify me through beeping sound but it didn't showed up on the disk management or on the My computer screen, also I check on the status of the drive it says UNKNOWN ERROR, but stated 'works perfectly fine' ..
Im getting a message raw drive. Help please
It only happened in my external SSD cuz I was using USB to type C cable... I was supposed to use C to C cable... Now it's fine...

How to run all these steps if hdd is not showing on laptop
Hi there, thank you for your question! check if the HDD is properly connected and powered on. You can try connecting it to another computer or port to check if it's recognized. If the issue persists, try updating the HDD driver from the device manager. If that doesn't work, you can run a disk check and repair any errors using CHKDSK command in Command Prompt
And what do you do if it doesn't show up at all
there is no drive letter once you get hardware fatal error!
Got this message on an external LACIE usb drive (2 TB). Fix was replace data cable.
Disk - Alias not found , What should i do??
Mine fall from 3 feet n now while copying my external hard drive giving this issue
ummm method 3 what if it says check wont work
What, I can't do anything with an external drivr
Getting response advising it it RAW. Help.
talks about saving your data then says format lol
Didn't fix my disk even though it showed up as ok in status
sadly tried this program and many others and nothing but one even found the drive but sadly none of them can get the files i think the lame my passport on the drive is just broken so nothing can get past it and i cant find a way to bypass it to just use the hdd as an hdd to recover the files lol
none of these helped at all, it doesnt even show up on anything but disk management and its not able to be inialized
None of thes reasons are my problem. It is a brand new drive.
