  • As spring begins to take hold, Castlerock is on its final limbs. Just before its season closing, I went and did Rumble and Liftline (future video) in what is my final trip down these trails this season.

We won't see the rocks in Tahoe until October this year. If we get an early winter we may never seen the rocks again. 'WINTER IS COMING'

Good skiing but after living out West for 10 years and returning to the East coast, I can't and don't want to ski the east. The conditions stink. You would rip it out west, I'm sure of that.

Do you have special skis for this time of year? To call this technical seems a bit of an understatement!

Nah, I’ve got rentals. I’ve had the same rentals for 2 years, and they are surprisingly not that beat! The key is to go over the rocks fast enough that they don’t scratch. (That’s a joke don’t do that)

We call them rock skis. Eventually you do your last repair and stone grind on a pair of old skis and they're your rock skis. Core shots can be filled with cold temp wax but will occasionally pop out. In the east, the granite usually has a thin layer of ice that allows pivoting and slipping w/o wrecking base material. In spring... not so much, and you have to be more deliberate in line choice and use the terrain to maintain flow.
Fun fact: you can edge and almost carve moss on rocks if it's thick, like > 1cm. Jay has lots of moss in the ungladed areas.

its not that difficult if you ski more than 3 weeks a year, but not too many people do that.
