Isәnmesez! Minem isemem Andy. Nichek khәllәregez?
Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Tatar language.
Tatar is a Turkic language spoken primarily by the Volga Tatars in Tatarstan, Russia, with about 5.3 million speakers in Russia and over 7 million worldwide. Tatar-speaking communities exist in various countries, including Azerbaijan, China, and the US. Some Mari and Mordva Qaratay people also speak the language. In Russia, the 2010 census revealed that 69% of Russian Tatars and a significant portion of Tatars in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan have some knowledge of Tatar. It is an official language in Tatarstan, alongside Russian, and uses a Cyrillic script with additional letters, although a Tatar Latin alphabet was introduced in 2001. Tatar has two main dialects: Central (Kazan) and Western (Mişär).
The Republic of Tatarstan, is a republic in Eastern Europe, part of the Volga Federal District in Russia. Its capital and largest city is Kazan, a significant cultural hub in Russia. The region's primary source of wealth is oil, supported by a robust petrochemical industry. Tatarstan shares strong cultural, linguistic, and ethnic ties with its neighboring republic, Bashkortostan. It is home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Kazan Kremlin, the Bulgarian State Museum-Reserve, and the Assumption Cathedral and Monastery in Sviyazhsk.
The Volga Tatars, also known simply as Tatars, are a Kipchak-Bulgar Turkic ethnic group from the Volga-Ural region in Eastern European Russia. They are the second-largest ethnic group in Russia after ethnic Russians, primarily residing in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan. The majority are Sunni Muslims, with a minority practicing Orthodox Christianity. They celebrate various holidays, including Islamic ones as well as pre-Islamic holidays like Sabantuy, which marks the end of spring sowing. Tatar cuisine, known for its baking dishes and sweets, is famous beyond the region, with dishes like "chak-chak" and üsbusmaq being iconic. Tatar national costume, influenced by Islamic traditions, is now worn mainly for festive occasions and retains elements from the late 19th century.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.

May the Tatars stay safe after all they've gone through and are going through now, whether in Poland, Crimea or the Idel-Ural.

Thank you for finally making video of my language and my people. You have earnt my respect from Tatarstan republic of Russia.

Great video! Have to point out that this is not the standart Kazan Tatar, but one of the Mishar varieties: the ç sound is pronounced as a whistling sh in Kazan Tatar [ɕ], and as ch or ts in Mishar variety.
The alphabet used is also a bit far from Zamanalif, the most commonly used Latin alphabet for the Tatar language.
Yay. Love this language😊
Once, I've even tried to write a course for tatar language on wikiversity.
Great collaboration.

A Kipchak language with Bulgar heritage. I'd like to see a comparison between Chuvash, Malkar, and Tatar since the three are the only languages known to be of Oghur Turkic background
Nice video 🙂
Tatars are a group of peoples, speaking related, but still different languages. The Volga Tatars are just the biggest of them. In addition, several nations have been called Tatars in past, but not today, f.e. the Azerbaijani.
TENGRI BLESS THE TATARS
but they are mostly Muslim and some are Christian, why Tengrism?

It's called Tatar, not Tatar Turkish. I'm Polish, but I don't typically call other Slavic languages "Slovakian Polish" or "Bulgarian Polish". They're separate languages spoken by separate nations.

The Turkish language is a dialect of the Tatar language

Are they any differences between the Majority Muslim Tatars and the Christian "Kryashen" population of Volga Tatars as I'd assume they're more likely to use Russophonic vocabulary considerably how they aren't Muslim?
@@RussianUkrainian9 ??
Как по мне, человеку, который здесь живет, особой разницы в частотности употребления русских слов не имеется. Некоторые слова по другому используются, но все из той же татарской лексики.
Kryashen is same Tatar language with same Arabic-Persian loanwords. Actually even Chuvash has plenty of Arabic and Persian loanwords.

For Tatars, you usually write your language in Latin or Cyrillic, you write in Latin in Tatarstan or only outside of Russia? Some tatar who can answer me or someone who knows? I want to learn this language
Good video andy :-)
As Tatar I can say we usually use a Cyrillic Alphabet, but many modern Tatars, especially in emigration or living outside Russia, may use Latin Alphabet. We have 2 versions: 1999 and 2012. You can google it and find Wikipedia page about Tatar language and script. By the way, in Tatarstan if you write official message to government in Latin Tatar or Arabic Tatar they must accept it. I wish you good luck in learning our language!
Thank you so much
Kazan was also one of the last bastions of resistance against the Moscovites (another being the Khanate of Sibir which would fall after Kazan) during the Imperial expansion, with the Russian Tsardom defeating them and absorbing them as a part of the soon-to-be Empire, having to deal with Russification and Christianisation efforts by Russophones. Had they resisted better, then maybe we'd have a Tatar Free State in the modern-day or perhaps a New "Golden Horde" had they decided to take the path of their Mongolian ancestors.
So much so, that Kazan is one of the few Muslim-majority cities in Russia.

Is this language mutually intelligible with Turkish?
@hakanozaslan9571 Yeah, I'd figured Tatar and Turkish aren't mutually intelligible. They come from different branches of Turkic. Tatar is a Kipchak language and Turkish is Oghuz. Nevertheless all Turkic languages are fairly close to each other as they only started to diverge circa 300 CE and are inherently more conservative than Indo-European languages, especially in regard to consonants, as these appear to be quite stable in Turkic languages, so you can indeed recognize isolated words, but whole sentences and especially quick and flowing vernacular will be almost completely unintelligible between branches of Turkic. It can sometimes be hard to understand each other in languages within the same branch as well, because even a conversation between Turkish people and Azeris can find its difficulties in a very informal or casual setting, and that's while many consider Turkish and Azeri to be basically the same language.
Great language. Greetings from a Pole speaking Hungarian.
