      He is not a kind of player who would just look at a position and comment. Probably he is calculating on all the boards in the back of his head so its only obvious he will be very tired. He sometimes goes full 180 on the chair lol.

    I think Nepo is the Ivanchuk of this current generation, his ceiling is high, however, as Carlsen alludes to, his floor is lower than most, but when he hits the ceiling, he is unstoppable.

    Nepomniachtchi is one of very few players that has a positive record against Magnus in classical chess. He poses a real threat to him.

      @@Sjorsisgangsta Magnus has not been as sharp in recent OTB classical tournaments as he was perhaps a couple years ago. Magnus probably still wins just because he's a better player though, but I think Nepo poses the biggest threat out of the field.

      I don't feel he meant it as an insult to Nepomniachtchi. My take on it was that he was saying he still has a lot of potential within him. He's showing respect (which is also clear when he casually says that he's been outplayed by him before).

No, he didn't mean this as a potential, he just expressed the huge gap between Nepo playing well (ceiling) and Nepo playing bad (floor). I think for Magnus on the strength of a player depends just as much on his floor than on his ceiling. He was just expressing Nepo's gap between those is bigger than other players.

      World ranks are a better indication for who is the best player in the world than playing 12 games at an event. I think Magnus said something similar that he rather care for that than the title.

      I agree.Ian will play something sharp in some games will win and hold the other or Magnus will crush him.He can't catch the level of concetration of Magnus or Caruana he can make way more easy mistakes in the middle and endgame.

      But Nepo has only himself to blame i think, he spent 90% of his time in the backroom and basically blitzing out his moves (compared to Magnus).
      I think he should spent more time at the board instead of watching a screen in the backroom, maybe fewer mistakes would be made..
      But let's face it, Magnus would have won either way i think.

And consistently a great player who would probably have been world champion at most other periods of history. but I don't think his skills and strengths are distinct enough from Magnus. There is just an edge in aggression and tactics in Nepo that sometimes give them the advantage, yes even against Carlsen... But then again, Magnus feels differently and says as much on stream that he doesn't see some of Fabiano's tactics until he plays them... And he'd know much, much better

      It does not matter what Anish Giri says. Other players say way different things. Everybody has his own opinion. But objectively seen, Magnus is better than Nepo.

The point I'm making is: Nepo has strengths that happen to be distinct from Carlsen's and in some areas he has the capacity to exceed him even over 12 games. Nepo's tactics for attacking in mid-game just come out of the blue in a way they don't for other super gms. Both Fabi and Carlsen are endgame gods. It's difficult to see how Fabi could beat Carlsen.

      Looked it up. He was world number 15 when he was 20 in 2011. But he only broke the top 10 in february of 2019

    some players get at top level after certain age and some get very good early on. Its related to biology and brain development. It's not just in chess also in other fields as well.

    nepo has lets say 40% chance to tie on classics and if it goes to tie breaks i would say 50-50 , i think his chances are better than fabi
    i would give fabi 50-50 classics against magnus and on tiebreaks 25% fabi's chance

    drawing conclusions can be very hazardous yet all we have this past year is online play at shorter time controls to use as a measure of ones current ability....just how those results determine classical strength...is beyond me...though i would agree magnus's results as current WC..leave a lot to be desired....arguments are purely subjective without foundation until after the fact..when the actual results just continue the loop for mediocre minds.....so have all the fun you can making predictions......and drawing conclusions...but i am certain....that nothing is certain.....and just how many of you immediately want to argue that?
