    Love your videos, I've stopped watching a lot of koi videos now, I've had problems like anyone else but I think the problem is people are over complicating things that's why having problems, I've went back to basics and my fish are doing well, My advice is keep it simple. Enjoy your fish.

    Hi mate I have only been in the hobby for a year and my water is very soft and my PH is 7.5 from the tap. The KH is 0 no KH at all out of the tap so I have to buffer it with sodium carbonate. I only keep it at 2 to 3 because it’s impossible to keep it in the high levels. Because I know koi don’t like KH or pH fluctuating to much. So it nice and easy to keep the KH at 3. I have learnt from others that sodium carbonate has got a natural Ph of 8 so if overtime you chuck a load in it will always keep your ph at 8. But trying to keep it at that with the amount you have to add you just have to be careful if you forget or your on holiday and your not adding it to your pond. It could drop quicker. I run my pond at a low KH and never had any problems. But i do keep my eye on it all times 👍👍

      Hi pal thansk for sharing your keeping mate, everyone is different but defo interesting mate I know a lot keep it at 3-4 and i agree with what your sayoing mate. Good luck growing into this amazing hobby pal

    So, in general a pH of anything above 6 and below 8 is completely fine long term for carp and not harmful in any way, being slightly into the acidic side of things can actually be helpful as it prevents the less toxic ammonium from converting into the far more toxic ammonia. A lower pH can also reduce the chances of algae blooms so don't get caught up in thinking 'acid' is a scary word (in terms of melting stuff, alkaline substances act in exactly the same fashion. If you've ever used lime mortar and burned your skin you'll know exactly how). The downside of being slightly acidic is that it slows the whole nitrogen cycle down, organic material won't break down as efficiently However, if the pH rapidly changes or is prone to swings this will cause discomfort or even death so your kH, or buffer, is far more important than the pH overall because it maintains stability. A good method of keeping a good buffer and a neutral/alkali pH balance is to use chalk (calcium carbonate) gravel as a substrate, it'll slowly dissolve over time providing an excellent long term buffer.

      @johnnyfied1  5 месяцев назад

      Hi mate, thanks for the awesome and informative message. I liked reading this, I did not know about the chalk. Also real interesting hearing about PH as tbh mate mine is about 8.2 and always the same. Cheers mate 🙏

      @@johnnyfied1 As long as you keep it below 9 and relatively stable you'll be fine. Acidosis tends to happen around 5.5 and alkalosis tends to happen around 9.5 I use agricultural lime on my lake because it's the cheapest and most easily available carbonate source (about a ton per acre) but you can use all sorts of things like limestone, crushed oyster shells, dolomite etc. They are very slow release and work best in running water if available. If it's stable and the fish are happy I probably wouldn't go messing around with it though. My lake is a 600+ year old estate lake of about 2 acres that has been rather neglected over the last 30 years (surrounded by trees and a couple of feet of horrible, stinky silt in places) and I'm currently in the process of restoring it to health on a shoestring budget.

      @@johnnyfied1 Long way to go until we start reversing the damage but it's going mostly to plan so far. Big setback this year as we've realised we're getting runoff from the nearby arable fields but we've taken steps to mitigate this so hopefully we can get the nitrite/nitrate under control.

    Your filter bacteria also deplete the KH too as that is their food. That can cause a PH crash also and then lead to Nitrite and Ammonia spikes. Thanks for the info. Good video.

      Hi mate, Yeah KH & GH confused me at the beginning TBH.
      KH Just add 1 drop to 5ml of pond water, swirl it round and it goes Blue.
      Then add 1 drop at a time swirling it until it turns yellow.
      Thats your KH the number of drops you need to turn blue to yellow
