Big door is the main door to allow access during the day. Small door was heavily guarded at night and would only allow single person access for safety. At the time all towns had heavily guarded walls; medieval life was dangerous he he. My favourite street camera is the Panasonic GX9 with the Olympus 17mm f1.8, its a fantastic lens, nothing else like it really; absolutely stunning ;-)
Wow Vici!!!!! Thanks for the info and you are the first to shed some lights to my question!! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoy the lens! I used the GX7 before and haven't tried GX9 since I have the PEN-F (I think it's better looking heheh). Anyway, have a lovely day!
My GX9 replaced my old GX7 (the photos I posted on Twitter were using the GX7). The GX9 having the GH5 sensor and the new electro-mechanical shutter has much better image quality and really sings with a prime lens. I use the GX9 with the cheap accessory grip and it makes a huge difference to handling; I dont mind that it blocks the bottom hatch as I charge and download using the side USB 3 port with its natty little hatch which is the talk of RUclips, little things huh? Only thing I dont like about it is the comp dial as, unlike you (points at the Pen F), I dont like retro he he
Yes it does, perhaps surprisingly. It can actually be a bit of a drag as when you are looking through the EVF you sometimes find it has pulled back into MF without knowing it and you wonder why the shot isnt auto focussing for 10secs. This of course will be true on an Olympus body too. Its an occasional irritation no more. On balance I am glad of it as I like having scale focussing available if i want it for zone focussing and this is my street lens. The lens is a stella performer. I permanently fix a leica style metal lens hood on mine (a fiver from amazon and a couple of quid for a centre pinch cap to fit snuggly inside it) as it makes it look much better and of course a hood is a benefit anyway for shade and impact protection. I cant recommend this lens highly enough; its a definite favourite ;-)
P.S. It is well worth buying the new accessory grip for the GX9 as it transforms handling. Doesnt really matter that it blocks the card and battery bay as i charge and download using teh USB 3 port on the side ;-)
I can give a thumbs up without looking the video. I would never have bought it - if it would not have been part of the Pen F kit I bought on recommendation of the sales person. Now it is the lens that is most of the time on my Pen F. Never fails me. And it has the focus clutch. Perfect. No weather sealing … well … the Pen F doesn't have it either. And if you would have the black version it would look great on your camera. Works fine without hood, too. Most bang for the buck you can get. Even if it is not your preferred focal lens (I thought it would not be for me, but boy was I wrong).
Thanks for the video. Personally the zuiko 17mm f1.8 is the lens is my most used travel photography lens. My minimalist 2 lens travel kit I use is the 17mm f1.8 and the kit telephoto zoom 40-150.
Thanks David!! Yeah that's a nice combo. I do have my travel kit, either 12 or 17mm, then 25mm and 60mm macro, which gives me a great range and super light and small!
Thanks for the review Jimmy. This lens is probably my favorite lens ever. I never quite understood when people were talking about lenses that render things beautifully until I tried this one. Some people say it‘s not the sharpest lens or whatever, but that doesn‘t really matter. The images this lens produces are brilliant and especially if you‘re shooting right in the sun the highlight roll off is just brilliant. Couldn‘t imagine a better lens for street photography. Really wish it hat weather sealing though
Leander Hoefler thanks mate! Yes, sharpness isn’t everything and it’s how the tool connects with the photographer, I rate that higher than anything else :)
Red35 Photography Definitely, logically there was no reason for me to get the 17mm because I have the 12-40mm and shoot only from f4 onwards for street. But a tool you enjoy using is so much more valuable than the sharpest or best gear!
Cheers Christoffer! :) I do like the pro too, it's been my workhorse lens but it's bulky and if I want to shoot on the street discreetly, I will take this out instead.
Killer lens for street photography. There is a test on a popular website that shows that the 17mm f1.8 is basically as sharp as the 17mm f1.2 pro. Great rendering and I like the flares too.
One of the reasons of small door is for safety and limiting. On the other hand small door is much lighter than those big heavy doors and much easier to open and close. And In my country (Iran) doors were often small in past because thay made people bend to habituate them to be humble! I like this reason so much!
I really like the 17mm 1.8 as a lens you can carry around all day. It's a shame that the 25mm 1.8 does not have the focus clutch and the metal built quality.
Very true and that goes to the 45mm 1.8 too. I would pay another £150 for the metal build and manual clutch for sure but then this will become a more expensive lens and I think Olympus did it for giving beginners a lower entry point to try out their high quality primes.
I plan on travelling with my E-M10.2 and the Lumix 20mm 1.7 pancake lens. It almost fits in my pocket and is super sharp. Of course, if the E-M5.3 is released soon enough that's what I'll be taking. Thanks for the review. I like your videos.
Very nice shots! I own this lens for a while, also the lumix 15 1.7, wich is great too. Most of the time i couldn't decide wich one to go. For street the clutch of the 17 is essential. But sometimes you need a wider view and the 15 is excellent wide open.
Thanks Heiko, yes, the 15mm is very sharp indeed especially wide open but I prefer the operation, like you said, about the Olympus. Hence I rate the Olympus higher as a result, though 15mm does look quite sexy too
photos look sharp fornstreet photography, really. So what is the difference if you compare the 17mm with the 45mm? I have always thought the 17 is better for Bokeh effect
The 17 was my first prime lens...but also my first m43 lens. I've since sold it and moved on to other lens, but I do remember the shots I took quite fondly. Mind you, I was only just learning photography at that time, but the shots that came out were still amazing.
terp02Andrew thanks for watching mate. Yeah i think it’s a great little lens that goes well with travelling for its size and weight, image quality is great too
Very good lens, great photos and most importantly, very small form factor. Unless its a photography trip and my sole purpose is to take photos, i prefer using GX850 with this lens for a casual touring (night markets, busy streets etc). no one wants to lug around a gigantic hunking piece of metal on a relaxing trip.
I have try to love this lens (i have owned it two times) and it so cool lens to look at,but it have many problems:very high distortion, huge astigmatism, visible up to f/5.6 aperture, and it is not sharp at all,it have more a nostalgic feel to it,because it look so cool.
Really? That’s a shame. Mine is perfect and this also mirrored by many other users. I do notice fringing are 1.8 and slight distortion but nothing that I would call serious.
@@Red35Photography It is possibly i must try it for the third time around, but i have the Panny 20mm that i love and is super sharp and very fast focus on Pannasonic Cam, but is not that fast focus at all on Olympus cam like on my Pen F in low ligth, and they are very close in range at 17mm vs 20mm.Mm i must think it over :)
Wow, 3rd copy. It’s weird that this is the only lens that I hear about ‘doggy’ copy a lot on a regular basis. Lucky mine is fine and I suspect that most recent batches should be ok too.
Red35 Photography You can find video on RUclips , clicking sound Olympus 17mm f1.8 in video during AF. My first copy had it from the box, second one after 1.5 year of usage., so dealer send it back to Olympus service but they did not fix the issue and then I got third one. If I can remember first two copy's were made in China while the last one is made in Vietnam.Think that does not make any difference.
I bought one this summer and it had the af chatter during video (not a deal breaker but you need C-AF to enable touch screen focus pulls; also could be useful if vlogging or otherwise not behind the camera). Sent it in for warranty and they replaced the AF motor and aperture mechanism. Now it's silent and smooth like my other MSC lenses. Unfortunately, my 1st lens, the 25mm 1.8 also had the chatter issue in video, but I didn't realize that was a fault until it was out of warranty.
Thanks Bene! Yeah, I love Olympus gear and they just have some of the best lenses around, at various different price range and performance levels. But don't worry, as long as you enjoy photography, that's what matters!
I will go a little deeper into why the little door is there. Times were dangerous, as mentioned. The little door made people entering having to bend down. This made it nearly impossible to wield a sword, so it made it easier to attack and cut their head off for the defending party. Grim, but practical.
I had the MZuiko 17/1.8 and traded it in for the Summilux 15 and don‘t regret that change, because that is optically better in any way. The MZuiko is too soft wide open, which is one of the things what I want a prime for. The Leica has nicer bokeh, too.
Hi Jimmy, do.you use a UV filter or lens hood with yr lenses I just got the 17 mm lens and am wondering if I should get a UV filter as well as a lens hood I saw some compatible non Olympus lens hood which is a lot cheaper & can serve the purpose as well...so am considering a third party lens hood as an alternative Would like to hear yr comments
If you want to protect the front of the lens then yes, a hood is more than enough, but I know a lot like to use UV filters to further protect the front element from scratches and stuff, no harm at all. I just don't use them. It's just another layer for me to clean ahahah 3rd party hood is perfectly fine. UV filter, if you want to get one, get a good one, trust me, better glass is always better for any lens.
Hi there, wow, travelling for half a year? Well, in this case, 12-40 may suit you better as it’s more versatile unless you are trained to use prime lenses, which is quite a discipline thing to do. Good luck with your travel!
@@Red35Photography I strongly concur with your advice. Based on my recent travel experience with an OM-D E-M1 and both lens (17mm f1/1.8 and 12-40mm f2.8pro), I found the 12-40mm was far more useful. Most of my photos were in the 12 to 25mm range and daytime. My travel kit includes a backpack with snacks and water, so the smaller lens did not save much weight.
Hi, thanks for watching. All our videos are shot with Olympus E-M1 MKII. Full list of our gear used for this episode is shown at near the end of the video :)
Dear Jimmy. It's a good thing I already have this lens, or you would be to blame for me spending my lunch money on yet another lens... Seriously though, the 17/1.8 is a great lens. If I had to go out with just one lens on the Pen F, this would be the one. It handles well, delivers great IQ, is a great focal length, and is really fun to use.
When I needed some stimulations for my creativity, Tracey asked me to photograph inside a museum! Oh well, ahhaha it was fun and can't say that this 17mm is a versatile piece that allows you to do a lot, both indoor and outdoor. That tiny body, pairs well with big and small bodies! I love it, really do! By the way, there's an optional hood that you can get to make it really sexy too (if you are a stylish photographer 😂)
I didn't like the proper Olympus lens hood for it, I found a nice screw in one on amazon that also allows you to screw a filter onto the lens hood, makes it all work pretty nicely! Oh and the lens hood was a fraction of the price!
I'd love to see you review the Panasonic Leica 15mm f/1.7 and compare it to the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 for low light street photography and semi-wide angle portraits. Both are great lenses from what I can tell but your thoughts on this would be interesting.
Hi Vegeta, yes, as a matter of fact, the bigger the aperture the better. 1.8 is always better than 2.8 (pro zooms) or kit lenses (3.5 to 6.3). That you can achieve lower ISO for a cleaner shots.
@@Red35Photography thank you very much for your fast reply. I was thinking to combine the metabones speed booster with the panasonic 20mm f1. 7. So that I would get very low f1.2. But the price is too high. In fact what do you think is it worth to buy the 15mm pro lens (which is less than 500 euros here in Germany) with the same apreture or to roll with the 20mm for almost half the price?
I don't think the Metabone speed booster will work for native M43 lenses, you can speed boost lenses from other format, like full frame or old manual lenses. I may be wrong unless they have released a new model. The 15mm 1.7 will be a lot sharper compare to the 20mm 1.7 but it will give you a wider field of view which is better for astrophotography.
There are many answers for the Big and Small doors in Europe. And it depends if these doors are for a church or a city door or a castle. Many have said well. I will add something as a Ph.D in History. Big doors were often used to make people.. mass of people go inside and outside the structure or city etc. Small doors were used in a more protected and unobserved way to let people go in and out from the structure. In the Catholic churches big doors were only opened in a main festivity such as Christmas or Easter and small doors used in the rest of the year.. this due to the idea that you let in a lot of people inside the churches. Let's remember that in Medieval times not everyone were allowed to come inside a church if not for a main event. This to answer the question. Only one thing.. if we are speaking of a big door that is far older than a medieval one.. these doors are often linked to another answer but I will not speak about it this time 🙏 Very nice video as always.
It's a nice lens but after comparing it to the 20mm Panasonic, the latter is a better lens, it's cheaper and much, much sharper. Optically the 20mm is much superior. It's smaller and lighter too. Alas, its AF is slower, but fine in good light.
The 20mm Lumix was my first MFT lens, bought back in 2009. It was a great lens in its day, but it is far, far too slow to focus, and noisy at that. Back then that was OK, but it is unacceptable today in my view. I gave mine to my daughter 3 years ago and replaced it with the 17mm 1.8 and never looked back. The 20 is definitely NOT a much better lens. Sharper, smaller and lighter, yes, but I’ll take the 17 with it’s great IQ, premium build quality and manual focus clutch any day of the week. And I’m a Lumix guy.
Cheers Alvin, yes indeed. I've used the 15mm 1.7 also and yes, the corner sharpness is slightly better than Olympus but the downside is the 30-40% premium on price. But hell that lens looks good too!

Great video, thanks! I have panasonic 20mm 1.7 mkII and although it is very very sharp I would like to have a lightning speed focusing like 17mm has. Has anyone went from panasonic 20mm 1.7 to olympus 17mm 1.8 to tell me if I'm going to be dissapointed? Sharpness is something I like in my photos.
@@olafweyer859 If cinema lenses work for your process, then it would make sense to use them. Sounds like you prefer lighter lenses, so go with what works for you.
The small door was to allow daily entry by pedestrians... The large door was opened only for Horse Riding Royalty (or rarely for entrance by Horse & Carriage if important eg. Tax Wagon, Religious Leaders and so on...)...
Great lens, but has some issues. 1. The MF clutch: it will switch the focus mode to MF, but it won't turn on peaking unlike how the clutch works in the pro series lenses. The lastest lens firmware still did not fix the issue on my EM5-Mark II 2. After a year of light use, I start to notice the lens makes a lot of clicking noise when trying to record video in the AF-S mode, which made the audio almost unusable. I later found out that many people encountered the same issue (ruclips.net/video/Tp58E5Mc65g/видео.html). I think this might more like a design/quality control issue.
Definitely interesting and I need to do more digging to see as our copy hasn’t had any problem but I’ve seen similar comments before. Thanks again for watching though :)
One is a "man gate" and the other is for a man and a horse or maybe even a cart pulled by a horse...I think. "eye of the needle" is what the smaller was called, right?
Have you compared it to the Pana 20mm f1.7?? It is a very compact and good lens. VEry sharp and good color rendering. Only downside is it is slow and noisy. But amazing for the price!
Cheers Duncan, I heard early reports about this lens but it could be some of the earlier batches and mine is very new and from what I learn, others who bought the lens in the last few years haven't got any problems at all.
I myself use the 12mm f/2 alot more over the 17 f/1.8 combined with the 45 f/1.8 - Not that the 17 is a bad lens, it's how I see when shooting with my primes (Also own the 75 f/1.8)... Hoping to learn to use the 17 more in upcoming work. And I tend to shoot virtually wide open most of the time
Different of course. 12mm is definitely a bit wider and 17mm to me is more natural for environmental portrait and also documentary work. I love the 12mm too, just different. In terms of IQ, the 17mm has better edge sharpness at wide open and the 12mm also has just a tiny bit of barrel distortion, but I used that lens primarily close up street photography.
The 12mm f2 has bigger lens and looks more expensive. In my travels I prefer using the 12mm as the main lens and sometimes switch to 45mm f1.8. So my 17mm is not happy.
Not a bad lens, not a great one either. Not the sharpest one, does not came with a hood and the optional hood Olympus sells for it is horrible and pricey. Oh, and it comes with the worst lens cap I have ever used or seen. I've been using 15mm Pana-Leica and although that one has too much distortion for 15mm it is sharper, lighter and comes with a much better cap and a very good hood in a sexy pouch.
I guess either has its strength and weaknesses. I do agree that 15mm is a bit sharper but the 17mm isn’t too far behind. I also saw comments that some 17mm owners had problems too and I think it’s a QC problem from the early batches. One that we used was very sharp and I think it’s pretty nice. But the 15mm is pretty dawn sexy too
Do photographers really care what their (imaging) equipment looks like? The aesthetics of the lens/camera body combination, as opposed to the quality of the images they're used to produce!

Thanks Bene! Yeah, I love Olympus gear and they just have some of the best lenses around, at various different price range and performance levels. But don't worry, as long as you enjoy photography, that's what matters!
Does it have a zoom in also?
I will go a little deeper into why the little door is there. Times were dangerous, as mentioned. The little door made people entering having to bend down. This made it nearly impossible to wield a sword, so it made it easier to attack and cut their head off for the defending party. Grim, but practical.
Can you do a 45mm 1.8 review please ? 📸👍
Stay tuned my friend :)
Nice review. I bought that lens for similar reasons. What is the camera bag you have on your shoulder in the video?
Thanks Edwin. The bag I was using was Billingham Eventer :)
25mm f1.8 next! :)
Stay tuned to find out ;)
How would you compare it to 15mm f/1.7 panasonic?
12-100mm f4 and 75 f1.8 is my travel lenses 😊
For stills only, I believe the Summilux 15mm might be better.
I had the MZuiko 17/1.8 and traded it in for the Summilux 15 and don‘t regret that change, because that is optically better in any way. The MZuiko is too soft wide open, which is one of the things what I want a prime for. The Leica has nicer bokeh, too.
Hi Jimmy, do.you use a UV filter or lens hood with yr lenses
I just got the 17 mm lens and am wondering if I should get a UV filter as well as a lens hood
I saw some compatible non Olympus lens hood which is a lot cheaper & can serve the purpose as well...so am considering a third party lens hood as an alternative
Would like to hear yr comments
If you want to protect the front of the lens then yes, a hood is more than enough, but I know a lot like to use UV filters to further protect the front element from scratches and stuff, no harm at all. I just don't use them. It's just another layer for me to clean ahahah 3rd party hood is perfectly fine. UV filter, if you want to get one, get a good one, trust me, better glass is always better for any lens.
What do you think of which is the best 17mm f1.8 or 12-40mm f2.8 pro??
I am going to europe for half year!
Hi there, wow, travelling for half a year? Well, in this case, 12-40 may suit you better as it’s more versatile unless you are trained to use prime lenses, which is quite a discipline thing to do. Good luck with your travel!
Buy the prime
@@terrywbreedlove I got it. I will ;))))
@@Red35Photography I strongly concur with your advice.
Hello ... what camera and lens did you use to make this video¨?
Hi, thanks for watching. All our videos are shot with Olympus E-M1 MKII. Full list of our gear used for this episode is shown at near the end of the video :)
Dear Jimmy. It's a good thing I already have this lens, or you would be to blame for me spending my lunch money on yet another lens...
Seriously though, the 17/1.8 is a great lens. If I had to go out with just one lens on the Pen F, this would be the one. It handles well, delivers great IQ, is a great focal length, and is really fun to use.
Gregory Pease thanks mate!!! Yeah brace for more to come ;) thanks again for your support mate and have a lovely day!
I subscribe in your channel for m43 stay tune they are so many lenses! Thanks pleasure to watch!
Thanks mate!! We are on the quest on reviewing every single available Olympus lenses on the catalogue!! Well, we try !
Please, more videos featuring the Pen F.
mhs vz oh yes :)
很喜欢你这种怀旧风格的照片 怎么调的
Where is this lens made?
Jimmy the big door is the Pro door small one the premium
Hahaha Good one Colin!
Hi. What's your opinion about using this lens for astrophotography? Is it good for that purpose?
I have the olympus om-d e-m10 mark iii with the 14-150 mm lens f 4 and I'm not very happy with the results at night...
Oh yes, f/4 is way too slow. You need a minimum of 2.8 and a sturdy tripod.
hah I just picked this up 2 days ago before seeing this vid. glad I have someone confirming I made a good choice
Max Distortion was it great?
Nice video ! 😄
what 'bout 17mm 2.8??
Only one thing.. if we are speaking of a big door that is far older than a medieval one.. these doors are often linked to another answer but I will not speak about it this time 🙏
Very nice video as always.
Splendid on a Pen F, great images small and light with fast AF. Real street.
Isn't it great on the PEN? Just super awesome!
I think it is comparable with the lumix 15mm f1.7 though the leica has better image quality. Nice review
Cheers Alvin, yes indeed. I've used the 15mm 1.7 also and yes, the corner sharpness is slightly better than Olympus but the downside is the 30-40% premium on price. But hell that lens looks good too!

17.1.8 is my workhorse. Can’t live without it.
Reed Bernstein lovely, I can see why
Really disappointed there is no 17mm weather sealed compact lens.
This lens has balls .
Stergios Kakalios I am not disappointed and ta sharp in my opinion
Nah! That would be the Veydra 16mm T 2.2. Sometimes you can get really lucky on Ebay, price wise.
Olaf Weyer T lens :)
Meike acquired the lens designs from Veydra and tests show the Meike lenses to be even better than their Veydra predecessors.
@@raksh9 I got rid of the Veydra. Too heavy. The hype was real, excellent lens, but I think I was a bit of a snob wanting to have one.
Matthieu Grant bin Michel tax wagons!!! They should have made them tight enough that they could squeeze through 😂
Sounds like this lens actually might kill the 12mm F2? Oh yeah, small doors are for Hobbits man!
I have this 17mm but I'm using the 12mm f2 as my main lens
Can't tell why
Great lens, but has some issues.
1. The MF clutch: it will switch the focus mode to MF, but it won't turn on peaking unlike how the clutch works in the pro series lenses. The lastest lens firmware still did not fix the issue on my EM5-Mark II
Thanks again for watching though :)
i just wondering if i'm buying this lenses autofocus from body will work or just like another fixed lens?
The big door was built for wide angle lenses.
One is a "man gate" and the other is for a man and a horse or maybe even a cart pulled by a horse...I think. "eye of the needle" is what the smaller was called, right?
Cheers Roshua! I think someone had the answer earlier :) I am no historian but that’s a fun thing to learn hahha
Big door for coming through on horseback. Small door for people on foot, or to allow one at a time. Security in small door.
Have you compared it to the Pana 20mm f1.7?? It is a very compact and good lens. VEry sharp and good color rendering. Only downside is it is slow and noisy. But amazing for the price!
No I haven’t but I’ve heard many good things about it though, especially version 2. Would like to test it one day.
Cheers Duncan, I heard early reports about this lens but it could be some of the earlier batches and mine is very new and from what I learn, others who bought the lens in the last few years haven't got any problems at all.
Thanks for the answer !
How it compares to the 12mm f2.
Agreed. The 17mm is just not that sharp.
The aesthetics of the lens/camera body combination, as opposed to the quality of the images they're used to produce!
on foot or on horseback, I think
