  • The Civic Type R has become a common sight at our shop lately. We have wrapped dozens of these little FWD monsters already, and finally I had a chance to do a tutorial on the bumper.
This particular Civic Type R went for a full body XPEL Ultimate Plus PPF wrap & XPEL Fusion Plus Ceramic Coating package.
The front bumper is pretty complicated, as it has many pieces and a few tricky areas (mainly the piano black trims around the Honda Badge). This video will show you how to lay down the paint protection film, without any stretch marks, lift lines or fingers.
Vehicle: 2019 Honda Civic Type R
    Film Used: XPEL Ultimate Plus
    Template: XPEL DAP Software

You have the most detailed and comprehensive install videos on youtube. Literally the other videos go over the general install and then ques the music, but you go the entire 9 yards. Koodos!

And it all sticks perfectly with no bubbles or fingers, lol. I tried a 3M pro pre cut kit and had a total mess. Took the car to an XPEL installer and he showed me the film. I promise the 3M pro is much thicker and rigid. That XPEL looks like saran wrap. Definitely not as thick.
I wish the pre cut kits all had maps showing where the piece on the liner goes on car. Might not match exactly like it shows on car diagram. Also, it would be nice to have instructions showing where to tack. #s 1 thru whatever that indicates 1st location, etc. Finally, details that describe intention of the piece. For example, the work you did around the emblem. DIYrs may not know that piece wrapped up the side of the emblem. Learning that while installing usually leads to a bad install.

Yeah, there is no textbook to how to install pre-cut kits. I'm trying to post various style bumpers, each of which have its own unique challenges. Hopefully someone can learn something out of it and lead to better installs.

What solution do you use to make this installation possible? Water/soap? Thank you for your response

Is the film strong enough to protect paint from stone chips?

Why XPEL now and not Stek? Sorry if you covered that.

XPEL has always been by Go-To film choice for years. My rep is awesome to deal with, the material is great to work with, quality adhesive, and in all honestly, I've rarely had any issues with XPEL.
I started with STEK DynoShield about a year ago, and same thing. There is nothing bad I can say about the film. The adhesive is a little less aggressive and more foregiving.

Would it be the same process for a matte ppf wrap?

    • @ThePPFChannel

If you're using the cutout... yes, exactly the same. I would even extend all edges by 1/8 - 1/4 inch to make sure all edges are properly covered.
