The singer was Joseph Calleja, from Malta (Malta is part of the British Commonwealth). The cross is a Maltese cross.

The pink carrnation is in memory of Sir Malcom Sargeant, conductor of the last night of the proms for many years. He was always very dapper and reminded all of us of Fred Astair. His short speeches were charming and witty, making the audience (and us) laugh and cheer.
In the UK the highest award for civillian bravery the Nation can bestow is The George Cross. If you meet someone the G.C. after their name you'd best take notice and give respect. During WWII the entire Island of Malta was awarded The George Cross.

During the entire time, the island’s population of 270,000 were unerring in their refusal to capitulate. Malta was the first British Commonwealth country to receive the bravery award, which is usually given to individuals, and is second only in rank to the Victoria Cross. God bless them all.
My dad served on a mine sweeper in WW2 around the Med and especially Malta. He said they were a very resilient but warm human beings
The first tune "no place like home" is usually met with expressions of sadness at the Proms where people are thinking of home and theatrically holding handkerchiefs and drying their weeping eyes etc. Its all part of the fun and enjoyment of the Proms
The one requirement for whoever sings 'Rule Britannia' is they must have an outsize personality! The singer was Maltese; and although Malta is now an independent country, the UK has often helped Malta through our seapower.
Our wild and dangerous seas have meant that we have had some superb yachtsmen and yachtswomen. The sea means a lot to the UK.

I believe the carnation worn in memory of conductor Sir Malcolm Sargent who always wore a carnation when conducting the proms. Chief conductor of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts from 1947 to 1967. Until his death in October 1967.
Is always pulls on the heart strings. Especially to us Brits. You should watch Lee Evans sing I Vow to thee my country from Rememberance Sunday 2022, brought tears to my eyes.

Rule Britannia represents the greatest triumph of Britain in its crusade to end the worldwide slave trade. From 1088 slavery became illegal in England, to 1782 where a judge declared that anyone a slave who set foot upon British soil was a free man as the air of Britain was to pure to be corrupted by that abomination. It then went to 1812, when Britain declared slavery throughout its Empire to be illegal and finally to 1832 where Britain declared it would hunt down and end any slave trading throughout the world. Something it by and large achieved by 1890. So, those who despise us as a nation, who can't grasp why we celebrate our past have to really up their game to even get close to what the British achieved. Mock us all you like, but we know we achieved something you could only dream of.

The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts last about 8 weeks. The Last Night is when everybody is allowed to be silly, after being serious for so long.
The Proms are an institution and the Last Night is a special case and tickets for it are always sold out. Still parks all of the UK provide large outdoor screens live

Absolutely! The hornpipe and Rule, Britannia! are the best parts of the Fantasia. No Place Like Hone always makes me cry!
the hornpipe is the highlight of the proms and the orchestra really gets to show off their skill
So cool to see him wearing the Knight's of Malta cross under that track suit. Although It should have been the Knight's Templar cross , but I suspect it was done as to not upset the eastern population who inhabit our land. Both those crosses are woven into British history at a level that can never be taken away. We just tend not to understand our own history most of the time.
I think you may not have realised that the singer IS Maltese and he was promoting his own country, as opposed to 'not' wearing a Templar's Cross?

@@hiramabiff2017 - I meant to mention; he wore the 'official tracksuit' of the 2012 Summer Olympics (which London was hosting and why the UK medal winners came on at the end). So he was also 'supporting' the Maltese Team who had 5 competitors that year...
The instrument that began the performance with 'Home, Sweet Home' was an oboe, a double-reeded conical-bore woodwind instrument related to the cor anglais and bassoon.

During the proms collections are made from which they buy the carnations for orchestra & chorus and presents for the conductor and singer on the last night and also contribute the rest I understand to the musicians charity.
Close, but not quite right. Over the whole season, Promenaders collect money for music-related and cancer-related charities. (A children's cancer charity was set up in memory of Sir Malcolm Sargent). Typically £100,000 plus raised in recent years. Collections are also made for carnation buttonholes for the orchsetra, conductor, and soloists, plus some for the promenaders themselves, and gifts for the soloists. Flowers are bought and promenaders make the buttonholes on the afternoon of the last night. Carnation money is raised by the same people, but is separate from the charity effort. In 2022 the carnations had been bought but were laid as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth the Second on the afternoon of what would have been the last night, on the south steps of the Royal Albert Hall.
The solo tenor is from Malta. The white cross is the The Maltese Cross and the cross of the Order of St. John. It remains the symbol of the "Sovereign Military Order of Malta, of the Order of Saint John". It goes back to when Malta was ruled by various orders of Crusader Knights for hundreds of years.
The olympians selected weren't necessarily ones who could sing, they were ones whose sports were water-related, such as rowing - the sports (e. g. "sculls") were scrolled across the screen as they came in.

I think that there are a number of Last Night of the Proms videos and some people react to maybe one or two probably those are popular just because of the numbers of reactions. Perhaps people dont realise that they can be very different year to year.

The cross is the cross of the order of Saint John of the Hospital of Jerusalem or the Hospitallers who with the more famous Templars made up the two orders of crusader knights. Later the Hospitallers ruled Malta hence it became also known as the Maltese Cross and the singer was from Malta.

No one in Britain knows the words to the verses of Rule Britannia, but everyone knows the chorus. The cross was the Maltese Cross from Malta.

You need to distinguish between "no one" and "few people".
Not everyone knows that the second line of the chorus does NOT have an s in it, because it is an order ("the charter of the land" as the intro says), not a statement: "Rule, Britannia!
Britannia - rule the waves!" - not "rules".
It's a great tune, but the words of the verses fit it very badly, making them very hard to sing! (It's actually the only "hit single" from the ?th-century equivalent of a musical which sank without trace, at least I've never heard of it being performed in full these days [and I can't remember what it's called]. Composer Arne.)

The first instrument is an oboe abd it has a double reed which is what the guys blows... clarenets have a single flat reed which is attached to tge mouthpeice.. The cross represents the George Cross which the highest award for gallantry... the civilian equivalent of our highest award for the military..the Victoria cross.. the George cross was awarded the the population of Malta for their bravery during the second world war... a great honour and one of which the Maltese people are rightly proud..

FYI - Regarding your query about any YT creator and problems with the BBC, Tony . . . Back in the day (early 50's I think?) when televisions first came out here and became a thing, we only had the 1 channel on them to watch at first - the BBC . . . This, through the government of the day made it an Ad-Free public service broadcaster - and so the licence fee began for the general public to pay for it to watch its programmes . . . very limited ones at first, naturally, due mainly to the size of the large sized camera technology doing the recordings - until they became smaller versions that could also try and cover outside broadcasts, too . . .
Well, things weren't too bad for a good few decades really - as they took our money and made some excellent programmes for us all to watch - Comedies, Drama, Sport, Documentaries, Quizzes, Sci-Fi, & the news given out could then even be trusted . . . Jump forward to the last 20 or so years, and the once honest and unbiased BBC has now become more pro left leaning, and also very woke! So their opinion on anything cannot be trusted any longer by the majority of people! . . . Their annual funding via licence fee was taking in between 2-4 Billion - but people have become fed-up with how it's now run and are refusing to pay for it. So there is a bit of a battle going on at present about making them either fund themselves like the other stations now through ads, or to go to more online . . .
Their issue, is that they want "everyone" to pay for it, but a lot of people nowadays use streaming services that they pay for and don't watch the BBC at all . . . and so the general fightback began. More so as the money taken in now go mainly towards celebrity and other various Presenters salaries - including the top bosses, of course! --- and very little of it apparently goes towards any good programmes now. Those being of either more and more Reality crap appearing - Celeb shows with only Celeb guests - or many repeats of things again and again - and their better sport options were also lost to the likes of Sky, etc . . .
Money wise, they always hid the fact that they made a hell of a lot of money through selling/leasing - any of their programmes to countries overseas . . . and nowadays, they also have BBC channels in many countries abroad - which even sell advertising space on them . . . Which rakes in around 1-2 Billion a year - (but, mainly from the programmes that we here in the UK had been funding all of that time. And yet, the licence fee only ever went upwards - any of that income from abroad was never used to deduct what was paid for the fee here!) - And so, the BBC today is all about greed and money, left-wing politics, and wokism . . . One of the main reasons why anyone hoping to show and react to any BBC programmes on YT get blocked by them - as they don't like losing money on anything at all - which we paid for - but have never seen any of it coming back to us in any way . . . So, I'm also one of those people who have refused to pay for a company I no longer support or watch for a good few years now . . . (I hope that I was able to offer you a little bit of info about them, Tony?)
