I picked up a half dozen buff chicks recently for some reason. I've been so busy building a new coop and run that I've had no time to spend with them and they got stuck in their coop for a couple of weeks while I finished their run. They were sure happy to finally get out at about 6 weeks old. Second day out one little girl hopped up in my lap and was more than happy for some petting. Oh lordy, since then everytime I go in the run and don't take a seat on a bucket she will climb up my chest or back to sit on my shoulder. Petting isn't good enough, she's under my arm or my chin for cuddles. lol She's the only one so friendly. The others are friendly but not so much. I'm not sure if she's just that sweet or if she's playing her cards to stay out of the dinner pot? lol Anyhow....... she earned the name SweetPea. :)
I have recently moved to a small holding that have free range sheep, ducks and chickens. One chicken is an orange Buff Orpington and i instantly fell in love with her. She has got the most awesome temperament and allows me to cuddle her. I often have treats with me to spoil her and the other chickens. I plan on getting a whole lot more ! ❤
Really comprehensive, excellent video! I'm the owner of 8 buffs and one blue (had three, but sadly lost two due to a respiratory problem). We have them for their eggs and as pets. My teenage kids just love them, and actually ... so do I. We have one rooster Nugget who does a marvelous job keeping the flock in order. Living in Australia, summer can be an issue, but plenty of shade, water and watermelon does the trick. My advice would be 100% free range if you can, but you will need some grazing space. A bigger chicken means bigger feet and these buffs just love scratching and digging up stuff. We have 8 hens and are getting about five eggs a day at the moment, although laying does seem seasonal and linked to malting. Half of our flock were raised from chicks and are very friendly. The other half not so, but still reasonably sociable. Having a rooster means the hens are noisier than usual apparently, as they do chat away and look for feedback from the rooster, especially after laying an egg. I researched for months before deciding on orpingtons and overall, I am 120% happy with my choice. Absolutely beautiful chicken breed. If I had more land I'd get more!
I have a BEAUTIFUL Lavender Rooster, he is the absolute sweetest and very gentle, but he does want to know where his hens are. He is around 10-12 pounds and is just beautifully colored. I am curious, though. I may have a couple of cross breed White, they are not Leghorns as first suspected, (as they lay brown eggs, with tiny white freckles), how can I tell if they are a cross? Short of actual generic testing, as these are just for laying. Thanks!
Your rooster sounds stunning! To spot crossbreeds, you should look for unique physical traits or laying patterns that don't match purebreds. Take a closer look at their comb, feather coloring, and egg characteristics. Crosses might show a mix of features from their parent breeds, and their behavior and growth can also give you some clues. Without genetic testing, it's about piecing together these hints.
years ago I had about 60 Gold Orpingtons. I am now soon moving to a suitable area and would love to find these again,Buffs may do, but I cant seem to locate any Gold ones. Any clues?
Yeah I have two Buffs who are literally mean to my whole flock. I have a mixed flock who are all around 1 year. These two girls just started feather pecking the whole flock. Not the sweet docile chicken everyone describes.
