- Mustard is a LGBTQ lesbian / bisexual short coming of age story that deals with how hard it can be to accept the changes, big and small, that life sometimes throws at you.

Grace, a middle-aged recently divorced Chinese-Canadian, has worked at a bistro for over 20 years doing the same thing. She finds it hard to accept her boss' suggestion of changing her way of grinding mustard seeds, so to avoid this Grace accepts a compromise in training Beverly to help her increase the mustard output. Struggling to embrace the many changes in her life, Grace might have just found the one person to help her find peace with them.
This was my finals project at Vancouver Film School. It started out being over 10 pages long, with several locations, and 2-3 shooting days. Due to different school rules and some other lame things, we had to cut it down to about 7 pages, one location, and one shooting day. It was hectic as hell and completely bananas, but somehow we made it work.

Really good to see older women featured. I was beginning to feel only young/slim/hip/long-haired lesbians were thought relevant. TY for the representation. Well done.

Love the blooming friendship to possibly romance between two women who have totally different cultures, life experience and outlook of life. And the subtlety of messages in this short film. Really enjoyed viewing it. Keep up your good work 😄

I loved this film and the beautiful,subtle way it ended. It was romantic and not a single kiss was exchanged. Bravo!
When Grace says "You must leave now" it is a serious, sad moment, we can feel her pain, even if the movie is just a short, we come to know that Beverly understands that she has spoken so gravely, so overwhelming that she must leave Grace to catch up - and then come back. I guessed that the 10 page script was shortened here, mostly here, perhaps also at the beginning.
It pleases me how Beverly makes me think of Jamie Lee Curtis.
There is nothing "Lesbian" about this short Indie, and better off for it. It's excellent theme involves the nature and consequences of Change, and the story is beautifully acted and revealed.

I'm glad you think so! I just feel like we have way too many coming of age stories about young people, but they really could happen at any point in life and to anyone.
@@LKSFilms Absolutely true. I know too many people who felt they had to comply with social norms in their younger days and be nice little str8s with their spouses and 2.4 children. Your film was a refreshing change from the teen angst.
Another theme often ignored is that we never stop having to come out, it isn't a one-off event.
Anyway, I hope you and ESS are well and you continue to look after each other and entertain us.
