Play 'Coltrain patterns' which are the notes: 1, 2, 3 and 5 of each chord first and then switch the pattern aboud a bit, e.g. 1, 3, 4 and 5; 1, 2, 5, and 3. That's pretty much all he did. You need good technique to play this up to speed but it'll sound great. Just start slowly with each chord at a time.
As a long-time guitar player but jazz student I could improv diminished and whole tone over a static tonal center. I only guessed at and anticipated that this could be applicable over changes like these and actually simplify the improv process a bit. Very cool, thank you!

I remember Johnny Smith at his shop in Colorado, my father worked at Johnny's for years... and t remember him playing without amplifier? I still like the natural sound of Archtops.....

That would be welcome criticism for us who put a lot of time into creating these videos. That way we can gauge what viewers like or not like so we can take it in consideration for future videos.
I would never suggest starting on a major7 over a dominate chord because you end up with three half steps in a row. Now, if you want to change the structure of the song to suit a major7, fine, but then you're not playing the song.
I don't know where you get the 3 half steps in a row? As far as starting on a maj7 over a dominant chord, it's not functioning as a maj7...it's a chromatic approach on the "and" of the previous beat resolving to 1. This is meant to be played at a high tempo, usually in 8th notes which resolve quickly. Nonetheless, I believe you missed the entire point of this lesson! The use of the diminished over several non diminished chords is obviously not to follow the rules of conventional functional harmony. It's called playing "outside" and is meant to occasionally clash and be dissonant, although it always resolves. This concept is purposely designed to create ongoing "tension and release" and NOT playing through the changes to the letter. There are countless examples by the post-bop masters applying exactly what I've described. And before I forget...what do you mean you are not playing the song, if you do this?...It's jazz improvisation...so we are re-inventing the song. What we do and don't do in jazz, has to do with the context we are playing in and various other factors that are determined by your level and experience as a musician. That said, this is Coltrane we are dealing with here...in other words, post bop...not swing or dixieland!
Years ago, a sax player in New Orleans told me 2 things several times. He’d say get a half step out and play diminished, and often he’d say hit a bad note on a weak beat. It certainly led to me playing some interesting stuff. A trick I think to help get to this kind of thing. It did help. Thanks for your insight and clarity on this diminished business.
