I’ve just recently found out that William Adams I’d my great, great, great grandfather. I’m suitably proud and funnily enough have been a great steam train fan all my life, since about 4.
I remember this engine in the RWS story with Stepney. He was telling Edward all about the Bluebell Railway. Nice to see the real engine.
Tis a shame shame she's no longer in steam, but its fine loco however you put it.
Fantastic - the Adams is such a beautiful class.
Hi sir topham hatt nice railway you got I visited sodor like 6 years ago good times
Rest in peace Adam in Stories of Sodor
1882-1957
This trial Definitely was a great idea Chris.
Great to see this, Matthew Kirtley was my 4x Great Uncle.
It must be overhauled
One wish before I go - to see her in steam again! Difficult to have a 'favorite locomotive' but the wonderfully elegant Adams Radial Tank must be mine! Grew up near the remains of the East Kent Light Railway too!
Oh look that's Adam from Thomas and Friends
Adam's radial : me need a new boiler
Nutty preservation : let's go with a p2
Radial:seriously what the heck???!!!
I'd love to see her steaming agian!
She will be running forever in Sheena Easton's music video 9 to 5 (Morning Train)
Nice work Chris it's certainly is a fascinating loco to look at when down at the bluebell railway. Hope it can be brought back to steam some day.
Another great one! Hope the campaign succeeds! Cheers, Jack
This is the locomotiv from the music clip of Sheena Easton, 9to 5 morning train😎👍👏
Great work!
''great news!''.
''what?''
''the Adams radial tank is being restored to steam following the Bluebell's finishing their Atlantic and their B4 is also being restored''.
Nice video Chris. It would be interesting to see a 'Sole-Slip' on LNER Peppercorn A2 60532 'Blue Peter'. Cameron
CWSteam&Diesel it would be nice, however she is currently in peices being restored to working order!! Yay! That means we will have an A1, A2, A3, and A4 in steam
@@Electra_1203 sadly there are no LNER A5s preserved
KarlosBricks sadly not, but at least we can have 4
@@karlosbricks2413 replicas can still be made
@@theextremeanimator4721 In theory yes, although a suburban tank like that? quite unlikely, all the current replicas being built are big mainline tender engines, which have a hope of making financial sense as they can pull a decent number of coaches along the mainline. I can't see a subruan tank like that ever making sense to built from scratch
Lovely thing 👌
488 is to be restored by the h2 Atlantic group along with b4 Normandy
Ah yeah Lyme Regis is in West Dorset not Devon I just wanted to point that out, other than that great video c:
Lyme Regis is in Dorset, not Devon.
She's coming back
Hopefully
As much as I enjoy watching this, there are one or two mistakes I have noticed:
1. Lyme Regis is in Dorset, not Devon. But the other end of the same railway is at Axminster, which is in Devon.
2. The Col. Stephens line No. 488 worked at, the East Kent Railway, is actually in south Kent, not too far from Dover.
East Kent - Hence the name 'East Kent Light Railway'!!
All three should have been preserved.
victor tanzig brought me here
Year built:March 31,1885
That is Fav class
On the Lyme Regis Branch, before opening in 1900, LBSCR-loaned Stroudley Terriers were tested in the intention of them running the line. Their weight caused much damage to the track, as the line had been built cheaply with a light railway act. The Radials were chosen instead as the motive power, due to their lightweightedness, not just for them being powerful and able to tackle sharp corners.
Wait..... "TERRIERS" were too heavy for the line? Seriously?
@@TallboyDave It was either that or they wer underpowered and constantly required top ups at Lyme Regis following a steep climb from Axminster
You know what I'd love? The Adams Radial, the O2, an M7, the T3 and the T9 in one place, in LSWR livery. Preferably in steam but we can't have it all. Any other LSWR engines would be welcome. Not sure if it would be held at Bluebell, Swanage, IoW, or anywhere else, but there you go. Someone give me 50 million quid and I'll go off and arrange it.
Sole Slip: GNR N2
You should do a sole slip for blue circle
If someone with more tech knowledge than me started up a crowd fund for a new boiler perhaps the powers that be could move this stunning engine up the queue?
That's at the bluebell railway
A fine machine, to be sure.
Sadly, from what I've heard, it's that very original part, her Adams boiler, that's preventing her from steaming again, or even being a higher priority on Bluebell's restoration list; From what I recall of a discussion with a Bluebell volunteer back in 2010, the boiler she has now is basically shot to hell and no spares exist, so they would need to have a new one made from scratch, no easy task since this boiler evidently includes some unusual design features that make it tricky to build. At the time, it was thought that she would enter the shops almost as soon as the East Grinstead extension was completed, but now that said extension is finished and traffic has increased, priorities have shifted to restoring some of their more powerful engines, like the SR Schools Class 'Stowe' to working order. Maybe someday this Victorian beauty will steam again, but at the moment her chances of doing so within the next decade don't look good.
If it's any consolation, it looks like their GWR Dukedog, and even the A1 Terriers are in the same boat; they're just not strong enough to warrant the year+ of work time and the shop space they'd take up.
Her overhaul should start summer 2020 in the Atlantic house after 32424 Beachy Head is in steam.
@@samhope6310 as of now, tender pipework is what's being worked on beachy head
I would love to believe you. I hope I live long enough to see her run again... And I'm only 38 now! Lol
What are minky locomotives I come from America I don't know they here or not but yeah I just don't know tell us in the comments about this I will look in the later video I don't know what's
This Loco came up in a debate about the recently restored Hunslet 4-6-0 2ft gauge loco number 303, this loco and the Adams Radial Tank Are the only two loco's that we could think of where the coupling rod drives the the first powered axle, true a small detail but very unusual, are there other loco's that built this way ?
The Adams T3 No563 springs to mind. And if you want to stretch that to overseas, the numerous 'American' style 4-4-0s and NYC 999 spring to mind.
@@ChristheXelent Good point about the American 4-4-0's, my thoughts had only extended to British Locos. In trying to rationalize the design of Hunslet 303 one speculative thought was did this loco start life as drawings for a narrow gauge ( export ?) 2-8-0 goods loco, Did the war department approach Hunslet for a powerful tank loco in a tight time scale, so instead of trying to create a design from ground up Hunslets adapted a 2-8-0 by removing he first driven axle to let it get around tight curves ( no flange on the center drivers ) and replacing the pony truck with a bogie, otherwise 303 seems an unnecessarily awkward design.
Random one... Beatie well tank??
i wonder if she will ever run again?
She might be done in the Atlantic house after 32424 Beachy head is in steam (around 2019-2020).
Doubt in the Atlantic House as the team now want to build another new engine in there I think
This is a wonderful video as usual, but what is with the creepy background ambience sounds? It feels like freaking silent hill!
Ivatt Mickey Mouse tank engines? Which class were that?
The Class 2MT tanks, I think.
the ivatt class 2mt tanks yes
why don't they refurbish it or reverse engineer it?
I think you will find that 488 needs more then refurbishing, it's boiler is absolutely knackered and beyond repair.
I like her better in her br livery
You can see this engine under steam at ruclips.net/video/S_3vZYOYNYU/видео.html
Was there ever one with a separate tender ? I definitely saw a model on one in "O" gauge a few years ago at a model railway exhibition, and I seem to recall seeing one in a real life situation. Can anybody say one way or another ? Thank you
This was in Thomas and Friends railway series Stepney the bluebell engine
What is a mickey mouse tank?
George Stephenson An Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2 41312 based at the Mid Hants is one :)
How would she look in a crimson LMS esque livery?
In my opinion, it would look bae.
How fast does it go?
