News Editor Dan Sutherland has been on the launch of the Yamaha R1 GYTR. An undeniably good track motorcycle, but is it too capable for normal trackday riders like you and me?

So very true! I took my zx10r to track and all on my mind was that it wants to kill me all the time, and I don't want to crash it. Then I bought '06 636 for peanuts, gave it good tires and brake pads, and zero funks given. Much more bike than I can take advantage of, but so much fun not worrying about it one bit...

My personal observation of the R1M posse is a high level and at least intermediate level. So not bling compensation for poor skills.

Sure there will be people on cheaper bikes, nothing wrong with that. But I bet most of those ppl would be on the more expensive bike if they could.
"Oh but I go around litre bikes on my CB500/SV650/ancient 600" someone will cry out. **Nope**. No you don't, son. You go around less experienced/worse riders. Take any 2 non beginner riders of the same skill level and the one on the better bike will be faster 9/10 times.
Also, there's less of a safety net and it will probably get more expensive for someone tracking their standard road trim R1 if they crash then someone riding this GYTR.
Am I advocating for the GYTR? Not really. I think it would turn out A LOT cheaper to buy an used R1, buy most of those parts from forums/marketplace and install them yourself if you're half mechanically minded. Most of the stuff on this GYTR model is plug and play, there's no engine work so you really don't need to know a lot. Or you go even cheaper and easier by just buying someone else's used track/race bike!

This is actually a poor review. You’ve failed to mention any of the upgrades on the bike that people would really want to know about. You should say what discs, which calipers, which ohlins etc. people want to see those details and know about them. As for price, when did you last go to a trackday? Most superbikes are already over £20k and that’s before you do anything to them. There are now bikes in excess of £40k on track and yes why not? The owners enjoy them and can afford to repair them. Especially in the case of this bike, all the parts are available direct from Yamaha. They are created specifically for the bike and probably carry a warranty. I personally would not be risking my life on track with a £3k built in a shed R6 when all the latest safety and performance equipment is available, & no I don’t want an R7 either. Do we really need any of this? No. In fact we don’t even need to be on a trackday, we do it for fun. So even if I’m not scratching the surface and half the field is faster I’m sure many people will still rather be on this than on an 04cbr.
