- Devastation in North Sikkim has still not been estimated to correctness but in approximation, it has claimed over 80 lives with more than 100 people still missing and several thousands being displaced.
Vartica and I had gone to celebrate my 30th birthday in the most beautiful region of Sikkim - Gurudongmar Lake.
But on the night of the 3rd of October, both of us felt tremors that lasted for at least or more than 20 minutes only to realise the next morning that it was actually a flash flood. Since our connectivity to the other parts and regions was broken and disrupted we were unsure of the damage that has been done.
Here's a story of how we survived!

I was in Sikkim few yrs ago and it's such a beautiful place with beautiful kind people from drivers, homestays, locals, hotel staff all are really sweet people... special mention of Indian Army..love from Maharashtra to Sikkim
I have stayed in Sikkim for 7 years and seeing this incident and seeing my beautiful Sikkim devastated in this flood makes my heart ache. It hits more badly when the media does not cover it in the news yet again negalating the Northeast Region. I am glad that you were rescued safely but I am also glad you were there so you could show the reality. only a RUclipsr can do this.No doubt Nepali people are gold hearted who are always kind and polite even in this situation. Going to Sikkim Dec end so was searching all videos related to Sikkim and found this !! Suddenly a fear has sinked in !! Lachen is closed but lachung is there in itinerary!! Have to see how it goes !!
Don't worry, take a deep breath and visit Sikkim with an open mind. I have been to Sikkim and experience an earthquake in Gangtok (4 richeter scale) so the there was fear but the whole trip ended with wholesome memories of the locals and the beauty of the place. If anything goes out of the itinerary you can always visit Pelling and Namchi in Sikkim

That's y...we should not only promote tourism here n there ...we must adopt practices like sustainable tourism,to reduce less c - footprint and fight with climate change.
Even today the situation is precarious. Lachen is still cut off. Was there a month ago. Big salute to the locals in Sikkim. Even in times of danger, they took care of tourists.
Really what a real life experience you have shared and it’s also eye opener including all that due to climate change glacier melting more abrupt rain happening and the lake getting overflown and as a result landslides and road block… really mountain Himalaya day by day getting vulnerable in all parts due to global warming and. Climate change and depends upon on it also our country’s feature will depend at some extend so this concern should be taken up seriously by govt and people.. hopefully they are aware and doing relevant work.. and from blogging point of view you shared the incident which is really Herculean job at that moments.. keep up your good work…

Finally somebody spoke about it. We were stuck in Lachung at tge same time.....I know because we've been through it. It was such scary times can't explain. I even made a small reel but nobody bothered to see it but good that finally somebody is talking about it.
When we were stuck in Lachubg, that is when I actually realized how aloof north east states are from rest of India. Nobody was talking about it nobody new...whatever piece of info. People had was through insta post.
But all thanks to Indian Army and IAF amd Sikkim Tourism. When hotel owners started throwing people out of their hotels, stopped providing food to eat our army offered us all. Amazing people man....god bless them all.

You are extremely lucky Radhika as the destruction was massive. God has bestowed upon you for your good deeds and sweetness. High altitude has become very risky nowadays as I've recently been to very high regions of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath etc I've seen the destruction there and we have recently witnessed the 41 people trapped in the tunnel towards Gangotri 😢. So be careful in your future days of travel to the High mountains. I'm very happy to behold your sweet smiling face again 🤗 God Bless 🙌🏻

Dear Radhika..! North Sikkim is like a second home to me.. I went there so many times.. I still remember the day I first saw the Chungthang Dam was getting constructed.. I told my friends travelling with me, why do we need to do something for improvement which might harm nature later on.. and this disaster made me so upset as this place will always be my favourite one..ur video literally touched me.. as I felt so connected.. thank God you and Vertika is safe..thank you for sharing the real incident 🙏🏻

Had to cancel my North Sikkim Trip 😢 for 20th to 25th October 2023.
I have been there 3 times including North Sikkim. Love the people. Fortunately I also have been the part of the rescue team somehow. Glad that our rescue teams were able to help people when needed.

It was indeed a disastrous incident that took place and truly hats off to the locals and the Indian Army..
I was literally shivering and crying my heart out the day this incident took place coz SIKKIM has my heart... the number of people lost their lives are the just countless and no reporter or no one have any counts and not even disclosed the actual counts and the actual reason behind this destrtruction... Thank God that you n Vartika were safe ❤️

This was my 4th or 5th visit to Sikkim . I feel extremely close to it.
Situation is now much much better and tourism is resuming in north Sikkim which is a really happy news 😊

I am a Power Plant Engineer working in Sikkim from the last 12 years ,,,,One of my Junior Anupam Singh died at that night ,,,he was doing his night shift during that time in Chungthang Dam ,,,,and as you know, that dam has washed out entirely during the flash flood ,,,,Sadly the irony is, he just switched his company and joined Teesta Urja Chungthang Dam 3 months earlier from the incident,,,he was 27 years old , his body is missing till now.

What a terrible experience on Himalayas ! Earthquake in the Himalayas causing flush flood of the glacial lake ! Never heard of such event before. Happy to a see that nobody is harmed and the tourists were efficiently rescued . Experience of a life time ( though horrible).
Yes and the major reason is because of climate change as the lake was already overflowing. Glad we are safe 😊

Everytime, every single time I'm on this channel I feel so glad I came across you at all. Because you put watch worthy content well I wouldn't tag it as content but experiences you go through in the most amazing storytelling way and keeping it real still. I could feel the seriousness and tension around your situation through the screen but you know what I found the most beautiful? Don’t tell me the fuel is not government funded? Where are they getting the funds from? Budget was sanctioned by the Sikkim government to ensure we get rescued. Army cannot take such grand decisions on their own.
