It’s like Oakland lost the A’s, and his very life force itself was taken away.
We ALL grew up idolizing Ricky Henderson!!! He had that swag about him when he played.
Swag that he could and did back it up. RIP#24
I'm devastated. Rickey was my GOAT favorite baseball player. He was the epitome of the good things in Oakland. I dressed up as Rickey for Halloween when I was a kid. I'm blabbering. We will never forget the joy he brought so many of us.
he was my goat too
As a lifelong Angels fan I hated watching him against my team but damn did I not enjoy watching him play, what a loss for not just baseball but as you said Oakland, I'm so sorry for everyone.
Thanks Joel. He was my hero on the field. Any field.
You're not alone. A lot of us are devastated. This totally sucks.
Mine too. He put the fear of God in pitchers. RIP #24. They let you steal bases up there I heard.
As a baseball fan it sucks to lose such players in one year. Orlando Cepeda,Willie Mays,Fernando Valenzuela,Pete Rose now Rickey Henderson.
Heartbreaking…They will all be remembered and we as A’s fans will remember him forever.
Yes true, but Ricky is such a shock because he wasn't old ☹️ So sorry for what A's fans have had happen to them this year 🥺
@@JustMeELC Rickey Henderson (65 looking 50), The greatness and joy of the game is dying before our eyes way too soon!! I can believe Rickey is no more!!
Rico Carty too
@@JustMeELC i know lot of people say 65 isn't old but believe me as someone about to turn 60 in a little over 2 months i feel old.If your not yet in that age range you'll know what i mean when you get there.Lot of people assume since some people live till 80's,90's+ that some how those who die in 50's,60's+ are young but that's just not true. If a conditioned athlete can die in 60's no one can escape illness.Personally people who make it beyond 70 aren't old they are ancient in my opinion.
A Beautiful Tribute to Rickey Henderson. Thank you Brodie
Best leadoff hitter I've ever seen. What a shock.
absolutely. he was money to turn a single into a double, either by legging it out or stealing 2nd. RIP.
If a major league team had offered Rickey a chance to play in 2025 I have no doubt he would have gotten himself healthy and together to make an impact. The man loved to play. Gamer of all time.
It's either Rickey or Ichiro. I'd take Rickey if I had to choose.
@@kylecraig6789 i'm taking Rickey and i am a mariner fan. Guy just transcends sports.
@@Jacob_Spang With today's new pick off rules, Rickey might have had 180 stolen bases in a season. The only guy that would consistently turn a walk into a triple. We'll never see another Rickey.
This is a sad day for those that love baseball and most of all that love Oakland A’s baseball. Rickey Henderson went to school with my parents at Oakland Tech. It was a shock to them to find out that he passed away like it was for everyone else. Rest in paradise Rickey Henderson.
RIP Rickey, loved having him in Toronto briefly in 93.
Such a sad day before Christmas. My mom passed away this morning and then I saw this. Rip Mr. Henderson. Life’s too short it’s the holidays tell your family you love them ❤
It makes me sad to think about what you’re going through. Losing a mother is heartbreaking 💔
My condolences to you and your family.
Your mom and Rickey walkin’ or Runnin’ into heaven together.
Even though Rickey knows he’d get there first.. he would stop at the gate and hold it open for your mom. That’s just the guy he was… ❤
My deepest condolences for your loss. Super painful and I get how hard this is to lose a family member esp this time of year. May her memory be a blessing
Our condolences to you and your family may God you and your family 🙏🙏🙏🙏
We will never ever see a special player like Rickey again. He was so fun to watch esp from 1979-1990. He had the smallest strike zone. He played with so much passion and flair. He pursued his PhD in base stealing (1406) and scoring runs (2295). Rickey is the undisputed GOAT leadoff hitter. RIP RH!
Rickey is one of the few players I would watch hit or run no matter what time of year or if he was playing against my favorite team, it was always a joy to watch him hit and run the bases, another big blow to baseball this year!!
I’m a Giants fan, but I’m a Bay Area native and this man represented Oakland and the bay on the global stage when there was no one representing us. An amazing man. Rest in peace Ricky.
Rickey...RIP Forever an Oakland A
Well, except for that time he was a Padre. Or Red Sock. Or Blue Jay. Or Met. Or Mariner. Or Dodger. Or Yankee. Guess now? He's back with the Angels.
The True GOAT i am in complete shock. My all time favorite player
I agree GOAT
Three of the greatest ball players passed away this year. Willie Mays, Pete Rose, and now Rickey Henderson. The greatest five tool player, the hit king, and stolen base king. So sad.
Add Fernando, screw Mays
@@thebluecollarbibleguy5114why the hateful comment? Always 1! 🤬
@@wmw3629Must be a Dodger fan.
We also sadly lost Luis Tiant, Orlando Cepeda, Fernando, and Rocky Colavito this year as well. So much talent between all of those guys.
@@wmw3629 I'm guessing a Dodger fan.
This man was my baseball hero as a kid and the reason I have such a passion for the game. I'm heartbroken like so many of you. Thank you for so many great memories, Rickey. Greatest of All Time.🐐⚾
RIP #24 Rickey!!! Oakland As forever!!! Love from Toronto 🇨🇦
Well said!
😳😥. To say he was a once in a lifetime talent is understatement. RIP

Willie, Pete, and Ricky in the same year. Such iconic legends that are gone but not forgotten. Nothing boring about how they did what they did.
What about Fernando?

1989 World Series. Game 4 the A's are up 3-0. The announcer says the Giants cannot afford to get behind early. Ricky leads off with a home run
Kind of weird the A,s leave Oakland and Ricky passes away way before his time maybe like the good lord didnt want him to witness anything beyond Oakland. R.I.P Ricky
Longest sweep in World Series history.
@@danpietila6555 I believe his wife and daughters would have not been pleased.
I can’t believe he’s gone. He was bigger than life. Great player who was so much fun to watch. Loved him. RIP and thank you for the memories 😢
I'm just in complete shock over this. I grew up watching Rickey mostly in the 90s. He's the best leadoff hitter and base stealer of all time imo.
RIP Rickey Henderson 😢💔🕊️🌹🙏🏼.
Last time Ricky was on the field, Ricky was in Seattle. Ricky was throwing out first pitch of the final game of Oakland A's final game as "Oakland" in Seattle.
It's Rickey with an e. You could at least spell his name correctly

@@wmw3629 Those grammar police are a funny bunch. And not funny in a good way.
An all time legend. I am 44 years old and have been an A's fan since I was 6, so I was honored to watch the greatness of Rickey Henderson. If you have not seen him play, go watch Sport Century Rickey Henderson to truly see how awesome he was and he was never shy to let you know but he proved it. RIP Rickey. You will be missed and thank you for all the memories.
I’m shocked . Fantastic player to watch. Memories loved. Thank you Rickey💚💛
What a shock. He looked in great shape last time I saw him at the end of the season. Rickey was my nephew's favorite player when he was little. I can remember being at the A's game when it was announced that Rickey had been traded to the Blue Jays. My nephew cried that whole game. Today is another day like that.
Truly one of the all-time greats. Great player, great character, great person. RIP.
Rickey was one of those players you went out of your way to watch whether you were a fan of the A's or not. He was in that category with Barry Sanders because you knew you were watching a future Hall of Famer. It was always fun watching opposing teams try to get Rickey out when he was stealing bases. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Oakland fans and his family.
Best leadoff hitter ever. Incredible ball player. Old school. Already missed so much. We love you, Rickey. RIP
Rickey's greatness as an athlete and player can never be overstated.
He is simply unforgettable. The A's left Oakland forever and the greatest of all Athletics has left us all forever.
Many of us old-timers who played the game in the same era as the Rickey era all remember watching and
wondering and wishing we could do 1/10th of what Rickey was doing when we were on the diamond.
A lot of conversations started out on our much lesser baseball fields as, "Did you see what Rickey did last night?"
I believe it was the spirit of the memories of Rickey alone which kept the A's stay fire burning as long as it did.
No one, and I mean no other Athletic was ever at his level and very few on other teams were, either.
Rickey is a starter on most of all of ours all-time forever line-up of greatest players ever. Ever. No doubt.
And there is no one now who could do what Rickey did throughout a very long career especially make the youngest baseball fans baseball fans forever. And as Rickey himself would say, 'Rickey is gone far too soon.'
Damn, this makes me so sad. RIP to the greatest player I ever saw play.
I totally understand. I just wanted to make something to honour the man. I grew up in Toronto, he helped us get the world series in 93. So unexpected this happened. RIP Mr. Henderson.
The 1989 ALCS was some of the best baseball ever played. Henderson v. Stieb.
Fitting that you broke the news to me. I was in shock when I saw the thumbnail and hoped it was wrong. Rickey brought so many memories to the city of Oakland and Baseball. I was so happy when he stopped to take a picture with me. I told him I watched him growing up and tried to run like Rickey. He will truly be missed.😢
Oh man: No. No. No. No.
I finally made it to Oakland in September, and got tickets to an A’s game because I knew it was their last season in that park. And because I wanted to see Rickey Henderson’s name on that field before it closed. Rickey had swag before most of us knew what the term meant. And man, this dude was absolutely electric, all over the field but especially while on base. One of the most mundane things in a baseball field-baserunning-Rickey elevated to dramatic high art. Picasso on the base paths.
Damn, this one hurts. For real. RIP and condolences to the family and all the A’s fans.
This one hits as hard and as fast the man himself. R.I.P. to the fastest man to ever run 90 feet.
Brodie, Thank You for posting this Difficult report. I remember him at Bushrod Recreation and Park facilities playing Multiple sports and Dominating in Each of them, before he went on to Shatter the Record books of Major League Baseball. He could have gone Pro in many other professional sports as those who knew him would attest. Rest in Peace, King ⚾️⚾️🏈🏈🏀🏀🥋🥋🎾🎳🥅🏋️♂️🎖🏆🏅🥊🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Thank you for your heartfelt comments about Mr. Henderson.

RIP Rickey. I’m a Yankee fan and he was awesome while there. Best quote he ever had was being on first base John Olerud was the first baseman. He said hey I played with a guy who had the same name as you. Olerud says Rickey that was me!
That was one of Rickey's best quips. The Olerud encounter. EPIC, but that's how Rickey was, EVERY DAY!
Vintage Rickey!
RIP Ricky Henderson. You are One of the Greatest Baseball players that played Major League baseball has seen, and the numbers more than validate that. As being the most prolific base runner the game has ever seen, the Historical records are All over the books. More impressive for me is the record of Homeruns by a lead off batter. As most fans know, that once Ricky reached base, he had the skills to "manufacture " a run, either a walk ( his stance at the plate made establishing the strike zone very difficult for pitchers),or a standard base hit. When he wanted to, he would just take his 4 bases via the lead off Homerun. I had the pleasure of seeing him at the grocery store in recent years, well after his retirement from MLB, and he was in Outstanding shape, and coming from him, "I have maintained the same weight and conditioning as when I played ". This was absolutely true, and Ricky looked great. His passing is Very Hurtful, and from here, it was just announced within the hour, so we are All in Shock at this Sad time. He was 4 days away from his December 25th Birthday, and we are Wishing Heartfelt Condolences to his Family and All his Fans around the World and Throughout Major League Baseball. RIP to A Real One, A Great One. ⚾️🙏🏾🙏🏾⚾️❤🖤💚

I've seen alot of post saying that he passed. But wasn't sure if it was official. I'm born and raised in Ogden, Utah. Mr. Henderson played for the Ogden A's in 1979. RIP legend
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS in MLB baseball. RIP, Rickey
We rode Rickey so hard at Candlestick park but truly nobody was more beloved on the field than Rickey. He is with Tony Gwynn breaking cleats in heaven. RIP RICKEY EVERYBODY LOVED YOU!🙏😥
Riding Rickey for being an opponent to an always inferior Giants squad only meant you had no idea what baseball is all about. None of his opponents ever rode him. They exalted him and wondered at his greatness.
I loved him in every uniform he was ever in from the Yankees, Toronto, Dodgers, Padres, Red Sox, Mariners, Mets, and A's. I always thought it was just pure stupidity that kept the Giants from begging him to play for them. But, the Giants have long majored in stupidity.
I’m devastated, my favorite ballplayer player of all time! I grew up watching the GOAT and I stopped everything when Rickey went to the plate. Thank you Brodie, for saying everything I could never do. The Bay Area, thanks you for your loyalty and wonderful words. I can barely think right now, Rest in peace, legend 🥀 Oakland A’s Forever
As an A's fan, this has been 3 of the worst sports years of my life. Losing Dick Callahan, Ray Fosse, the A's from Oakland, and now Rickey Henderson. Just when you think your A's Fandom has hit rock bottom, something else happens to crush your spirit all over again. R.I.P. #24 Man Of Steal
I am so sorry for A's fans. You deserve so much better. I'm a Yankees fan, so we both got to see Rickey on our favorite teams, in his prime. It was an honor to watch him play.
Ya man, we have to b resilient to b A’s fans, always some bs out there. But we love em like a mf cause of the memories of guys like rick, fosse, etc… if u don’t know, u wont know. RIP Rick, legend
If not losing the team you grew up rooting for and attending many games he played in and also being from the same city as him. This hits the hardest, RIP to a true Oakland Legend
This is a sad day for all us Oakland die hards 💚
I’m grateful that I was a witness to his legendary career!
And so hard for all of us. Legend is too bland a word to describe him. I'm a Mets fan but I was crying today
The Man of Steel will live on in our memories and our hearts!
Guy was a beast on the bases. His legs were huge! He worked out in my hometown of san ramon at amador valley athletic club. .take care buddy!!
He was my idol as a kid, I tried to be just like him on the field, which was impossible. When I met my wife, she asked who my favorite player was, and I told her Rickey. She paid for me to have a meet and greet with him last year. He looked amazing. Was a true gentleman and talked with me and joked while signing my items. My wife said she never saw me smile like that. A part of my childhood died today. Thank you for the memories Rickey. Your legend will live on in your untouchable records

Seems like the Oakland A's Legacy is truly over. Very sad. Mr. Athletics. Gone. The Oakland A's. Gone. Devastating. How much did the heartbreak of the A's being moved out of Oakland contribute to this?
Not nearly as much as subjecting himsem to the pachyderm in the room experimental concoction.
I knew "Ricky Do" to be extremely health conscious...even throughout Retirement so it's very fair & plausible to assume this was certainly a contributing factor to whatever might be revealed in due time..& make no mistake, there's an ever growing amount of credible info supporting such claims which the media is not covering nearly as much as warranted....follow the $$$

Thanks Brodie - came straight here after hearing this awful news as I knew you’d have some thoughtful remarks. Rickey was my favorite player growing up. RIP.
The greatest baseball player of all time. RIP Ricky. We love you like you loved this team
I have a long story about Rickey. My step father worked at a place his father took his truck to. I idolized Rickey. We always went to Royals/A’s games in hopes to see Rickey. We were on the 3rd base line, Rickey was talking with his dad in B/P. The ball, as I’m standing here today right now, came down the line. He reached out, grabbed that foul ball from BP. I, early teens holler, hey Rickey can I get that one? To my amazement, from my hero….here ya go buddy…..
Story goes, jonesy knew where Rickey’s dad got his truck worked on. Knew who he was visually. We were a couple rows from his dad. Loren Jones, dressed in his uniform from work said let’s go chat with him. He was so very nice and said hey, I’ll get it signed for you. Do you have any more memorabilia you want signed? I had a whole ass pocket full. 6-8 weeks later Loren says, hey you ready to get your stuff. I had no clue…..I have everything today, still in the safe. Autographed. And today I think about Rickey and his family and I also think about my family and the man, Loren Ray Jones, who took me over and got that one simple interaction with, not Rickey, his father. RIP Rickey. And by god RIP Loren Ray Jones 6/24/2023 it’s those little things that make you smile. Much love to the Henderson Family
Years ago when he made a visit to Toronto to play against the Jays we had seats right near his outfield position. We were riding him all game with jeers. In the 9th inning he turned around and gave us all the finger. Everyone cheered.
RIP Rickey ~ you brought so much joy to baseball fans all over the world! Thank you for all the happiness you gave the world. . .

Rest in peace Rickey Henderson a mlb legend icon role model and friend to all 🙏
Rickey was my all-time favorite Oakland A’s player. Nobody else had quite the combination of swagger, speed, power, and passion for the game. The way we watch Stephen Curry now shooting threes-that’s the same feeling. We got watching Ricky on the basepaths; everybody knew, including the other team that he was going to steal the base and there’s nothing anybody could do about it. I was once driving in Berkeley and stopped at the light. The car next to me honked the horn, and it was Ricky in his Bentley waving at me. He was exactly the same as we all remember him-full of confidence and joy. I have been dreading this day for a very long time, but rest in peace Rickey. You are Oakland.
Deepest condolences to his fans in Oakland and friends and family. .
I feel your pain Brodie and I want to give you a hug to let you know I feel the same in losing an important figure in Baseball 😔
Ricky was this 66 year old’s favorite non-Cardinal. No better show than “Ricky Being Ricky.” The greatest leadoff batter. Ever. No one even close. .401 lifetime OPS. Almost as good a base stealer as Lou.😁Nobody will ever approach Ricky’s stolen base record. Wishing peace for his family. Ricky was universally loved.
He had the greatest ending of any Baseball HOF speech ever, too.
He's the reason I played baseball. Rest in eternal power King.
Thank you for putting this out while the emotions were so raw and so real. You put into words how I know I'm feeling on the loss of Rickey, I remember that last first pitch and he still looked like he was good for a couple stolen bases if he was just given a locker and then before you knew it, he was gone. I hate that the fans in Oakland will have no way next season to properly come together and salute and remember him unless they wanna go to Sacramento, they deserve so much better, Rickey deserves so much better.
