Trent isn't just the vocalist, he's the entire band, or at least he was in the early days of NIN. He played every instrument himself, and only had other musicians for live shows. He may not be the greatest singer when it comes to being pitch perfect, but he always delivers on an emotional level. When he sings, you feel what he feels.

The older you get, the more you experience you have, the more this song speaks to you.

Not a single time I’ve seen him live that his use of physical emotion and his voice hasn’t made this grown man cry not even a little ashamed to say it….he’s incredible

Pretty Hate Machine is a masterpiece - track to track tells a story, so individually, they may not make total sense, but all together, they tell the whole story. Trent is just odd, yet talented, enough to make it work all together. If you have not listened start to finish - it is worth the time, you will understand his thought process so much better. Good react and good analysis.

For similar NIN songs I'd recommend checking out Right Where It Belongs, The Great Below, This Isn't The Place, The Lovers, Lights In The Sky and Find My Way. All really touching, emotional songs

Oh, and a new song Trent Reznor and Atticus made for the new Bones and All movie "(You make it feel like) Home" is heartbreakingly beautiful! They've scored a lot of movies but rarely make anything but instrumental tracks

Melancholy, nostalgia, longing; NIN never fails to bring forth those emotions for me.
The way they write and perform their songs is so poetic.
They never fail to make me... feel, *truly* feel.

One of my favourite songs of all time. The emotion and the vulnerability seeps through the music alone and Reznor has a great way of weaving through all the little emotional nuances. And the lyrics are just spectacularly heart-breaking and relatable 🖤

Great track and your breakdown of it was spot on ... first time I've heard it and my thoughts were along the lines of ' there was an inner torment that he couldn't let go of and it was "eating" away at him, possibly an ex that was no longer attainable '

Back in 2006, my wife left me taking my son with her. I was in a downward spiral towards personal destruction. BPD, but not willing to be treated or to get better. We had a piano in our house. I taught myself this song and would sing it at 2, 3 in the morning. Not knowing what would happen. Just knowing I wanted everything to end. One day I got up and decided that I would let myself sing this song as an outlet, as a hymn to what could have been. Got up, got a job, got busy living (thanks Shawshank Redemption for that line). A year went by... I got home after work one evening, and found my wife had come homel This year will be our 22nd wedding anniversary. We have two sons. And although life DID NOT get easier after her return (had two strokes, and end stage renal failure - on dialysis now), but I want to live so bad. Because I finally got that which I thought I couldn't have. It was to be had all along. It was up to me. Te get up and fight for life. For my family. I still sing this song sometimes. To remind myself. As a word of caution, to not let myself stumble back to hell.

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing your story! It is comforting to hear that we aren't alone in whatever challenge or demons we face, and also an encouragement to know that it turned around for you (overall). I am sorry about your health issues but so happy that you found joy with your wife!

'Gone, still' is amazing. It's from the same series.
EDIT: It's even more chill, like a shiver from the breeze. Beautiful though. More acoustic guitar.

On a slight side topic from the song... Everyone runs multiple background thoughts at a time, but being able to think multiple conscious thoughts at once is an acquired skill. Anyone can learn to do it, but a lot of people don't.
Great reaction to a great song, but that off-topic bit stuck out to me and I felt it was worth commenting.

If you want to see a VERYYYYYYY VERRRRRRRRY VERRRRRRRY emotional, honest video and song check out James Blunt's "Monsters". Do a bit of research on the song as the context adds a whole new level of emotion. TISSUES will be useful.
