Catching a field goal is very rare to begin with. Running a missed field goal back for a TD is insanely rare. Its only happened a few times in history of college or NFL. Usually a missed field goal lands out of bounds but if a defender catches that ball in the air in bounds he can run it back.
I was at Ravens MNF game when McAlister returned FG 107 yards in 2002. Funny part: the Ray Lewis Block was the biggest highlight of play! Poor guy didn’t even see him! If you watch both of them, you’ll see they are the same play and setup for a return down left side of field!
not an auburn fan (but also not a hater), but yeah these two plays were special. i was rooting for auburn that season because of those moments. will never forget either
The play at 8:37 was so special to me. My grandfather and I were watching the game. He was still able to get around but was pretty sick. When Juan Jennings caught the pass for Tennessee and won the game, he jumped to his feet and we hugged and just celebrated. It is a great memory.
This is what makes college ball so great. Prefer it over watching NFL games. Texas longhorns all the way! Texas Oklahoma games are simply the best games to watch. Big rivalry between the two teams. Makes for a fantastic match.
A number of these are 'Hail Marys". A Hail Mary is a desperation last play with a small chance of succeeding; the QB throws the ball into the end zone and hopes a teammate catches it.
In the NFL, Aaron Rodgers has been said to be one of the best "Hail Mary" QBs out there (though this past season saw him and the Packers in the dumps). There's a vid or two on here somewhere.
Keep in mind that when a team is passing the ball around to keep the play alive, they have to pass backwards. If they pass forwards that is considered a forward pass which is illegal at that point. So that play where they were running around and passing it to other team members had all backward passes. It's crazy they were able to do that and then were able to run it all the way for a touchdown.
5:23 In both college and NFL, you can lateral the ball backwards to keep the play alive; if it's lateraled forwards, it's dead and play stops and in this case, the game ends. 99.9% (not an official number) it doesn't work but when it does. . . .
It’s very similar to rugby in that manor. Just wanted to add for the purpose of clarity that the only difference being when a line of scrimmage/a drive (set of downs) is established, it is legal to complete a forward pass from behind the line of scrimmage. Once you pass the line of scrimmage moving downfield, the lateral rules come into effect
3:14 The last game of the regular college season, most teams play their rival (derby) games. This is a rival game between Alabama and Auburn (which is located in Alabama). Bama is the big dog, Auburn is the little dog. Their rival game is called 'The Iron Bowl". Bama could've ran out the clock and go into overtime but to all surprise, they went for the kick. When Auburn gets the ball, everybody in America thought he was going to run the ball out of bounds and take the game into overtime. One of the great plays in AF period. It's called 'The Kick Six'.
Alabama won the national title in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and Auburn won the title in 2010. The Kick Six was the Iron Bowl of 2013 to help put that in further context. Stephen Fry has a video on RUclips where he goes to the Iron Bowl back in 2007. You guys should check that out too.
The two plays for Auburn, the Prayer at Jordan-Hare (catch against Georgia) and The Kick Six (run back of missed FG against Alabama) happened in back-to-back weeks.
The best thing i like to point out about these videos is watch the team with the ball's players other than who has it. They're running plays to push the defense into specific positions to make gaps in the field to run through
The play with the short pass to the side that won the game for the team in white and orange (Clemson University) won the National Championship for them (which is the college version of the Super Bowl).
Alabama/ Auburn is THE MOST INSTENSE RIVALRY IN ALL OF SPORTS. I'm a bleed orange Clemson fan and Clemson/ South Carolina has THE MOST INTERRESTING history for their first game.(It involves a week long fight. Capitol of South Carolina being divided by a barricade and 2 armed encampment, one on each side of Columbia.. and the South Carolina National Guard.) That said Auburn/Alabama are FAR, FAR MORE INTENSE. I lived in That area and I kid you not, there are gas stations painted Alabama red or Auburn Orange that WILL NOT SELL YOU ANYTHING if your wearing the wrong hat or have the wrong bumper stickers. 4 games I NEVER miss are 1.Carolina/ Clemson 2. Make sure to take a look at the numbers by the name of the school, those are their national ranks. For example, the game where Auburn ran back the failed kick, Alabama was ranked 1 in the nation and Auburn was 4. Huge moment on college football.
i'm not an auburn fan, but i hate alabama so much that i look back on that moment with absolute glee. (i'm an ole miss fan so i really really hate alabama lol)
A lot of these games also are big rivalry games which makes them that much bigger! I was on a naval ship in the middle of the ocean when the missed field goal with 1 second left when it happened and watched it live!
12:48 as a texas fan that game was heartbreaking. I almost got to go to the game but watched it on tv instead. Texas was getting killed and came back only for that to happen
The thing about this that is hard to translate is how huge the rivalries are. The Auburn/Alabama games are a singular event for the entire year in the State of Alabama. The schools are in state and families are divided, communities are divided - and it lasts a whole year.

I've been to 3 games in person and one was the Conference Championship for Michigan State and Iowa. The winning play for Michigan St. 13:12 was the 22nd play of that drive [and absurdly high amount], covering 82 yards and taking just over 9 minutes of game time and was closer to 30 minutes of real time. Just suffocating to watch in person.
7:05 as a Michigan fan that one still hurts. Unfortunately that young man who scored the touchdown for Michigan State had his leg broken when his teammates piled up on him.
i’m not an alabama or auburn fan at all. i actively hate alabama in fact and i’m pretty ambivalent to auburn. but the kick six is one of the best plays in college football, and the radio broadcast is one of the best sports calls of all time. i get chills listening to it.
What I love about these clips is you guys recognize the drama in the moment despite the lack of context. Now imagine knowing that Some of these last second wins are rivals that have played each other over 100 years, or the last play of a national championship game where the winner is crowned the king of the sport in that year. Remember when Man City scored two goals against QPR to win the Premier League in the last 5 minutes of the game? It’s like that … but what will really blow your mind is that these last second wins happen all the time in college football.
That comes from our soccer background! I’m sure they are even more special with all the context. As a man United fan that Aguero one hurt. Check out the champions league highlights of 1999. Man united v Bayern. 2 goals in under 2 minutes in injury time to win the cup and also clinch the treble (premier league, FA cup and champions league in the same season) never done before and never repeated since!
@@DNReacts , lol, sorry … didn’t know you were a Man United fan or I would have used a different example. I have seen that clip, and it’s awesome. You guys have found the closest thing the US has to the premier league (college football). NFL fans would try to disagree, but college has the history, rivalries, passion, etc. BUT, money is starting to creep into the sport. Recent rules have been created to pay players (who used to just be student athletes), so players are now transferring between schools if they’re not getting enough playing time. Football complexes on college campuses are $100 million plus facilities designed to entice players to join your school. The purity is starting to leave the sport … we’ll see where it goes from here.
A lot of these plays are either game wining or game saving plays, but not just that the gap between the best college football teams and the worst are immensely huge so a lot of these clips are either 2 great teams going neck and best of the best and one doing something insanely impossible or a school that no one gave a chance to win the game pulling off the impossible. A lot of these clips are about teams fighting the odds to beat an opponent they shouldn’t beat and you can understand why that brings out so much passion

Hello to our British friends. Glad you enjoy American Football. Just lost my Step Dad who was from Brentford. Coached soccer in TX for 35 years. For context most of the games you showed are not only MIRACLE finishes but they are HISTORIC RIVALRIES like the Premeir League has. The KICK 6 game was between Auburn University and The University of Alabama. Same state. Both great universities and there are so many more just as intense and deep seeded. Once you see the histories and classic games it will bring more appreciation. Think MAN U vs Man City.
I'll point this out here - Only one forward pass is allowed in a play, but if the ball is passed laterally or backwards, there is really no limit to how many times. Plays like this have been called back when replay shows that more than one forward pass took place. Also, despite the ball bouncing, it is still considered a live ball.

Yeah most of these plays are neat but you really don't understand the implications without context. The Kick 6 is an exciting play, but if you don't realize that's the most hated in-state rival with the national title on the line it's not the same.
Stuff like the Clemson-Alabama play that looked pretty simple, they didn't realize that's the National Championship game. That was the biggest moment for Clemson Football maybe ever.

My boy, Josh Allen, did NOT appear in a lot of highlights given that he came from a small school if from the top division in college football today. Wyoming's stadium was listed as the 'worst' stadium in their state because apparently, given that high school stadiums didn't count in FivePointVids' criteria, it was the _only_ stadium in that state.
I would love to see y'all react to the best college football entrances. One of the most exciting times in the game seeing your team run out and take the field with traditions that date back dozens or even hundreds of years.
Yeah, we call that long heave downfield at the end of the game a "Hail Mary" because you're basically throwing it up and saying a prayer that one of your guys might catch it. You're correct that it hardly ever works.
I have an uncle who went to Auburn and the first college football game I sat and fully watched was the Iron Bowl, so during the entire game we were on the edge of our seats, Alabama lined up to kick it and we were all ready to turn the game off because if we lost like that, it would be heartbreaking. We watch the kick soar and we see Chris Davis return it and watching that return genuinely helped start my love for the game and it’s a memory I still think about to this day, the reactions, the emotions from when it was kicked to when it landed in his hands to when he hit the end zone, it was a completely unreal experience
To put these plays in Football terms: Imagine if a keeper comes up in the final minute for a corner in a cup final. Then miraculously the keeper scores. This especially pertains to the long throws or “Hail Mary”.
Context; If you watch the Duke/Miami highlight where they went full on Rugby you'll see there were 2 illegal blocks and AND the Miami team ran onto the field during the play, but the refs never called any of the penalties. The Michigan State guy that blocked a kick and ran it back for the game winning touchdown actually broke his hip when his teammates jumped on him. That was the last play of his career I believe.
6:50 I forget the context to this clip but Michigan State University and University of Michigan are massive rivals, mainly because they're both top universities in my home state of Michigan. Last year, there was an incident in which some MSU players assaulted their U of M counterparts after a loss and were promptly charged and then suspended. Just an example of how in-state rivalries can become bigger than life itself.
I was at the East Lansing miracle. In that endzone. I saw he made it over with my own eyes. Drove 10 hours from my college for that game with my buddy. Unreal. Never heard a stadium erupt like that.
A couple of rules to know. First, the game can't end while the ball is still in play. (Didn't know that it was the same in rugby.) Second, you can make all of the backward passes that you want. If the pass is dropped, it's a fumble and the other team can recover it. So, when a team needs to score a touchdown to win, you'll see some of these plays with multiple "lateral" passes to try and score in a sort of rugby-style fashion.
As these are all memorable and noteworthy it's worth knowing the stakes of some of these games too. The numbers in front of the teams on the scoreboard are their national ranks which would mean implications for conference and national championships. And then you add to this fact that some of these games are massive rivalries, a lot being in-state (Alabama-Auburn, Michigan State-Michigan, etc) and it makes it even more special, or heartbreaking depending on your allegiance.
The number of in conference games Georgia has lost in the final seconds of a game is genuinely heart breaking. Tennessee and Auburn hurt but that Bama one still hurts as fresh as the night it happened.
The poor Michigan Wolverines fan at 6:59 has become One of the most memed images of what American sports fans call "the surrender cobra" - the instinctive way you put your hands on top of your head when some catastrophe happens to your team. It's the universal sign for "oh no, what just happened?"
The little numbers next to their team names are their rank. Only the top 25 in the country get a rank put of a few hundred teams. So if you see two teams ranked in the top 25 playing it means it's more important. Also some of these were the national championship game
Just found your channel today. I’ve been binge watching. I loved your honest reactions and how they are not over reactions. As for a video recommendation, given that you are a couple of British guys, I’d love to see your reaction to some MLS, major league soccer, content. Maybe a good place to start would be the top 100 goals of the 2022 MLS season by crossbar TV, or the top 16 saves of the 2022 MLS season by the Major league soccer official channel? The second video I recommended is only four minutes long, so perhaps it would probably make more sense if you did do them both to combine them into one video.

Auburn and Alabama absolutely fuckin hate each other and they were playing for basically a spot in the championship game which makes the kick 6 even more insane
One game "winning" kick I would recommend reacting to is the most recent Peach Bowl with Georgia (my state team) Vs Ohio State .The score was Ohio State 41 and Georgia 42 and Ohio State was about to kick to try and score points to win the game with 8 seconds on the clock. Ohio state missed and It was exactly midnight making Georgia win on New Years day. There was a whole meme going around saying "While people were wishing each other a happy New Years Georgia fans were celebrating the win of the Peach Bowl". It was really cool because the kicker missed at exactly 12:00am and Georgia won the game. Also The Georgia Bulldogs have won the national championships 2 years in a row. 2021-2022 being Georgia Bulldogs vs Alabama Crimson Tide and the score was 33-18 and 2022-2023 being Georgia Bulldogs vs TCU and the score being 65 - 7 and not only did Georgia win by a long shot but that football season they went undefeated which means they won every single game (15-0) and in the 2021-2022 season they only lost 1 game (14-1) I would definitely recommend checking out more about the Georgia Bulldogs as it has been said that they may become one of the best college teams out of the whole league.

As a a Canadian who fell in love with college football a couple of decades ago, I din think there is any league that has more passionate fans. Only 4 teams, out of 128 teams, make the college football playoffs (other than inning teams go to a variety of bowl games). Thus the regular season is so important. No team with 2 losses has made it. So literally every game could be the one that eliminates you , especially if you lose to the wrong team. Some of these plays cost their teams the chance to play for the national title. Others were in the title game, so the drama of the moment might if been lost on you.

In other words - it can happen, but it's extraordinarily unusual. More unusual still, it happens at the very death of the game. And even more unusual, it happens at the very death of an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT game. The two teams are intense rivals within the same state. It goes well beyond Tottenham vs Arsenal or United vs City. What's more, they're both generally very, very good. That play was an iconic moment in American sports history.
The clip at 5:03 of Alabama v. Georgia is in the Overtime period of the National Championship game. That one pass won Alabama the National Championship of College American Football that year.
The context is as important as the actual performance on the field because they're often big rivalry games and the lesser team in the history of the rivalry is the one that's winning the game.
It's interesting that you mention rugby, because American gridiron football's rugby roots really show in the "hook and lateral" play like you watched. They can only pass the ball backwards and are trying to get it into the endzone in one continuous play.
This epic moment happened 100 years ago, no known film or even photos of the moment that i know of. For at least 50-60 years the story was only kind of remembered by a bas relief on a gym wall. You guys need to check out what is probably one of the greatest upsets in college football history. Appalachian State University (pronounced App-Uh-Laa-Chin), at the time was a small school by university standards. On September 1,2007 they played the University of Michigan, and this game was supposed to be an absolute blow-out. See App St. was a team bigger schools liked to play as a season opener "practice game" to showboat and beat the shit out of them. This game was no different and App St. wasn't given a chance in hell of beating Michigan. Long story short, App St. was tired of being the whipping post and went into the game ready to prove to the college football world that they were not having it anymore. Look at the numbers to left of the teams name. That's where they are ranked (only the top 25 out of 128 get ranked), it can give you an idea of the scale of the game --> whether the miracle was an upset, if it was just a massive game with much bigger stakes, etc
The "kick six" you guys are talking about is possibly the most legendary play in college football history. It came in the annual Auburn-Alabama game, which is widely considered to be the 1st or 2nd greatest rivalry in college football and one of the greatest rivalries in American sports overall. Really enjoyed this video!
It was fun to see happen, but I'd have to say the most legendary play in college football might be the Statue of Liberty play that Boise State pulled off to beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
@@notmyrealname1730 Very true. That Statue of Liberty play (and maybe the Doug Flutie hail mary) is probably its biggest rival. It's totally fair to be of the opinion that the Statue of Liberty play was better.
You guys also need to know that a lot of these clips are "miracles" b/c the under dogs are the ones winning. A lot of these are huge underdogs beating ranked teams.
The Tennessee/Georgia game at 8:40 was special because in the last minute or so Tennessee scored on a long pass to go up by 4 points, then Georgia scored on a long play to up by 3, then Tennessee scored on this this play as time ran out to win the game.
On the last play of a game with your team ahead, a defender should knock the ball to the ground. But it is natural for a defensive back to want to catch the ball for an interception. If you do go for the interception on the last play of the half or the game, you do run the risk of it bobbling off your hands into the receiver's arms. That would be rare but it happens more than you might think.
When the teams are kicking field goals, the kicking team puts in a bunch of big guys to block the other team's players so that the other team can't block the kick. When there is a turn over that gets past the line of scrimmage (seldom) and a fast guy from the other team gets the ball, there is no one on the kicking team that can catch him. A 330lb guy isn't catching a 180lb guy in a foot race, when all of the player are elite athletes.
I will never forget that Michigan v Michigan State game. Half my family is U of M fans and the other MSU fans. My dad was making fun of my brother because Michigan was supposed to win but then Michigan State somehow go that to win the game. My dad was so disappointed. To show how much people care about sports that punter for Michigan was getting death threats. Love the competitive nature of American sports but some Americans take it too far.
I don't mean to "American-splain" too much. but at 11:45, the runner doesn't score, he goes out of bounds at the 3-yard line (as indicated by the official) and the next play shown is 3rd and goal from the same drive. so as dope as scoring twice in a minute would be, that's not what happened lol. Still a miracle though since they needed that big play to set up a TD to take the lead.

American college football is a spectacle that shares few rivals, and none in the U.S. If you have the chance to visit The States, I strongly recommend you visit in the fall and find a major college football game to attend. I am biased. But, I cannot more strongly recommend College Station, Texas, and Texas A&M University. It is beyond a special place, and the gameday experience will change you. The best part about this is they have zero context to understand the rivalries here. The raw emotions when you beat your in state rival on these kinds of plays is indescribable.
The touchdown at 7:45 has a lot of missed story behind it, in such a short clip. The team that won (Georgia Tech) was unranked and the losing team (Florida State) had an outside shot at getting back into the Championship game, before this happened. The player that scored the touchdown (No. 17) is named Lance Austin. As he enters the end zone, the player beside him (No. 20) is his twin brother Lawrence.

5:27, we call that a Squib Kick (probably comes "Squib" from gun terminology). That happens when there are just seconds left and the kicking team is suspecting some kind of trickery by the returning team, so they intentionally kick a bad ball to disrupt their attempt at a miracle return.

And that’s a good reason you don’t just try 70 yard field goals for the heck of it … very risky if you fall short.
Add to that the immense rivalry of that game and the fact that it was the last play... Probably nothing quite like that will ever happen again.

A number of these are 'Hail Marys". A Hail Mary is a desperation last play with a small chance of succeeding; the QB throws the ball into the end zone and hopes a teammate catches it.
In the NFL, Aaron Rodgers has been said to be one of the best "Hail Mary" QBs out there (though this past season saw him and the Packers in the dumps). There's a vid or two on here somewhere.
Keep in mind that when a team is passing the ball around to keep the play alive, they have to pass backwards. If they pass forwards that is considered a forward pass which is illegal at that point. So that play where they were running around and passing it to other team members had all backward passes. It's crazy they were able to do that and then were able to run it all the way for a touchdown.

It’s very similar to rugby in that manor. Just wanted to add for the purpose of clarity that the only difference being when a line of scrimmage/a drive (set of downs) is established, it is legal to complete a forward pass from behind the line of scrimmage. Once you pass the line of scrimmage moving downfield, the lateral rules come into effect
3:14 The last game of the regular college season, most teams play their rival (derby) games. This is a rival game between Alabama and Auburn (which is located in Alabama). Bama is the big dog, Auburn is the little dog. Their rival game is called 'The Iron Bowl". Bama could've ran out the clock and go into overtime but to all surprise, they went for the kick. When Auburn gets the ball, everybody in America thought he was going to run the ball out of bounds and take the game into overtime. One of the great plays in AF period. It's called 'The Kick Six'.
Alabama won the national title in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and Auburn won the title in 2010. The Kick Six was the Iron Bowl of 2013 to help put that in further context.

A lot of these games also are big rivalry games which makes them that much bigger! I was on a naval ship in the middle of the ocean when the missed field goal with 1 second left when it happened and watched it live!

The thing about this that is hard to translate is how huge the rivalries are. The Auburn/Alabama games are a singular event for the entire year in the State of Alabama. The schools are in state and families are divided, communities are divided - and it lasts a whole year.

I've been to 3 games in person and one was the Conference Championship for Michigan State and Iowa. The winning play for Michigan St. 13:12 was the 22nd play of that drive [and absurdly high amount], covering 82 yards and taking just over 9 minutes of game time and was closer to 30 minutes of real time. Just suffocating to watch in person.
12:15 on the first play he got tackled short of the touchdown but then a few seconds later they scored
7:05 as a Michigan fan that one still hurts. Unfortunately that young man who scored the touchdown for Michigan State had his leg broken when his teammates piled up on him.
i’m not an alabama or auburn fan at all. i actively hate alabama in fact and i’m pretty ambivalent to auburn. but the kick six is one of the best plays in college football, and the radio broadcast is one of the best sports calls of all time. i get chills listening to it.
What I love about these clips is you guys recognize the drama in the moment despite the lack of context. Now imagine knowing that Some of these last second wins are rivals that have played each other over 100 years, or the last play of a national championship game where the winner is crowned the king of the sport in that year. Remember when Man City scored two goals against QPR to win the Premier League in the last 5 minutes of the game? It’s like that … but what will really blow your mind is that these last second wins happen all the time in college football.
That comes from our soccer background! I’m sure they are even more special with all the context. As a man United fan that Aguero one hurt. Check out the champions league highlights of 1999. Man united v Bayern. 2 goals in under 2 minutes in injury time to win the cup and also clinch the treble (premier league, FA cup and champions league in the same season) never done before and never repeated since!

You guys have found the closest thing the US has to the premier league (college football). NFL fans would try to disagree, but college has the history, rivalries, passion, etc. BUT, money is starting to creep into the sport. Recent rules have been created to pay players (who used to just be student athletes), so players are now transferring between schools if they’re not getting enough playing time. Football complexes on college campuses are $100 million plus facilities designed to entice players to join your school. The purity is starting to leave the sport … we’ll see where it goes from here.
A lot of these plays are either game wining or game saving plays, but not just that the gap between the best college football teams and the worst are immensely huge so a lot of these clips are either 2 great teams going neck and best of the best and one doing something insanely impossible or a school that no one gave a chance to win the game pulling off the impossible. A lot of these clips are about teams fighting the odds to beat an opponent they shouldn’t beat and you can understand why that brings out so much passion

Hello to our British friends. Glad you enjoy American Football. Just lost my Step Dad who was from Brentford. Coached soccer in TX for 35 years. For context most of the games you showed are not only MIRACLE finishes but they are HISTORIC RIVALRIES like the Premeir League has. The KICK 6 game was between Auburn University and The University of Alabama. Same state. Both great universities and there are so many more just as intense and deep seeded. Once you see the histories and classic games it will bring more appreciation. Think MAN U vs Man City.
Auburn that year was LUCKY. From the Georgia game to the bama game there’s no other explanation.
I'll point this out here - Only one forward pass is allowed in a play, but if the ball is passed laterally or backwards, there is really no limit to how many times. Plays like this have been called back when replay shows that more than one forward pass took place. Also, despite the ball bouncing, it is still considered a live ball.
The Auburn miracle deflected catch TD, and the Auburn field goal return for a TD, happened 2 weeks apart!!!

Yeah most of these plays are neat but you really don't understand the implications without context. The Kick 6 is an exciting play, but if you don't realize that's the most hated in-state rival with the national title on the line it's not the same.

I love hearing names like Boykin, Mahomes, Cousins, in these videos. Those little reminders that they had a life before the NFL. My boy, Josh Allen, did NOT appear in a lot of highlights given that he came from a small school if from the top division in college football today. Wyoming's stadium was listed as the 'worst' stadium in their state because apparently, given that high school stadiums didn't count in FivePointVids' criteria, it was the _only_ stadium in that state.
I would love to see y'all react to the best college football entrances. One of the most exciting times in the game seeing your team run out and take the field with traditions that date back dozens or even hundreds of years.

Yeah, we call that long heave downfield at the end of the game a "Hail Mary" because you're basically throwing it up and saying a prayer that one of your guys might catch it. You're correct that it hardly ever works.

I have an uncle who went to Auburn and the first college football game I sat and fully watched was the Iron Bowl, so during the entire game we were on the edge of our seats, Alabama lined up to kick it and we were all ready to turn the game off because if we lost like that, it would be heartbreaking. We watch the kick soar and we see Chris Davis return it and watching that return genuinely helped start my love for the game and it’s a memory I still think about to this day, the reactions, the emotions from when it was kicked to when it landed in his hands to when he hit the end zone, it was a completely unreal experience
To put these plays in Football terms: Imagine if a keeper comes up in the final minute for a corner in a cup final. Then miraculously the keeper scores. This especially pertains to the long throws or “Hail Mary”.
Context;
If you watch the Duke/Miami highlight where they went full on Rugby you'll see there were 2 illegal blocks and AND the Miami team ran onto the field during the play, but the refs never called any of the penalties.
The Michigan State guy that blocked a kick and ran it back for the game winning touchdown actually broke his hip when his teammates jumped on him.
That was the last play of his career I believe.
6:50 I forget the context to this clip but Michigan State University and University of Michigan are massive rivals, mainly because they're both top universities in my home state of Michigan. Last year, there was an incident in which some MSU players assaulted their U of M counterparts after a loss and were promptly charged and then suspended. Just an example of how in-state rivalries can become bigger than life itself.
I was at the East Lansing miracle. In that endzone. I saw he made it over with my own eyes. Drove 10 hours from my college for that game with my buddy. Unreal. Never heard a stadium erupt like that.
A couple of rules to know. First, the game can't end while the ball is still in play. (Didn't know that it was the same in rugby.) Second, you can make all of the backward passes that you want. If the pass is dropped, it's a fumble and the other team can recover it.
So, when a team needs to score a touchdown to win, you'll see some of these plays with multiple "lateral" passes to try and score in a sort of rugby-style fashion.

As these are all memorable and noteworthy it's worth knowing the stakes of some of these games too. The numbers in front of the teams on the scoreboard are their national ranks which would mean implications for conference and national championships. And then you add to this fact that some of these games are massive rivalries, a lot being in-state (Alabama-Auburn, Michigan State-Michigan, etc) and it makes it even more special, or heartbreaking depending on your allegiance.

The poor Michigan Wolverines fan at 6:59 has become One of the most memed images of what American sports fans call "the surrender cobra" - the instinctive way you put your hands on top of your head when some catastrophe happens to your team. It's the universal sign for "oh no, what just happened?"
What makes these even better is that almost all of them are in rivalry games or championships.
The little numbers next to their team names are their rank. Only the top 25 in the country get a rank put of a few hundred teams. So if you see two teams ranked in the top 25 playing it means it's more important. Also some of these were the national championship game

One game "winning" kick I would recommend reacting to is the most recent Peach Bowl with Georgia (my state team) Vs Ohio State .The score was Ohio State 41 and Georgia 42 and Ohio State was about to kick to try and score points to win the game with 8 seconds on the clock. Ohio state missed and It was exactly midnight making Georgia win on New Years day. There was a whole meme going around saying "While people were wishing each other a happy New Years Georgia fans were celebrating the win of the Peach Bowl". It was really cool because the kicker missed at exactly 12:00am and Georgia won the game.
Also The Georgia Bulldogs have won the national championships 2 years in a row. 2021-2022 being Georgia Bulldogs vs Alabama Crimson Tide and the score was 33-18 and 2022-2023 being Georgia Bulldogs vs TCU and the score being 65 - 7 and not only did Georgia win by a long shot but that football season they went undefeated which means they won every single game (15-0) and in the 2021-2022 season they only lost 1 game (14-1) I would definitely recommend checking out more about the Georgia Bulldogs as it has been said that they may become one of the best college teams out of the whole league.

As a a Canadian who fell in love with college football a couple of decades ago, I din think there is any league that has more passionate fans. Only 4 teams, out of 128 teams, make the college football playoffs (other than inning teams go to a variety of bowl games). Thus the regular season is so important. No team with 2 losses has made it. So literally every game could be the one that eliminates you , especially if you lose to the wrong team. Some of these plays cost their teams the chance to play for the national title. Others were in the title game, so the drama of the moment might if been lost on you.
As an Alabama fan I wish they would’ve shown the lead up to the “2nd and 26”

It's interesting that you mention rugby, because American gridiron football's rugby roots really show in the "hook and lateral" play like you watched. They can only pass the ball backwards and are trying to get it into the endzone in one continuous play.

That Auburn "Kick 6" is the equivalent of the keeper coming up to attack on the last kick of the game from a corner, and then scoring a bicycle kick.

This epic moment happened 100 years ago, no known film or even photos of the moment that i know of. For at least 50-60 years the story was only kind of remembered by a bas relief on a gym wall. You guys need to check out what is probably one of the greatest upsets in college football history. Appalachian State University (pronounced App-Uh-Laa-Chin), at the time was a small school by university standards. On September 1,2007 they played the University of Michigan, and this game was supposed to be an absolute blow-out. See App St. was a team bigger schools liked to play as a season opener "practice game" to showboat and beat the shit out of them. This game was no different and App St. wasn't given a chance in hell of beating Michigan. Long story short, App St. was tired of being the whipping post and went into the game ready to prove to the college football world that they were not having it anymore. Look at the numbers to left of the teams name. That's where they are ranked (only the top 25 out of 128 get ranked), it can give you an idea of the scale of the game --> whether the miracle was an upset, if it was just a massive game with much bigger stakes, etc

The "kick six" you guys are talking about is possibly the most legendary play in college football history. It came in the annual Auburn-Alabama game, which is widely considered to be the 1st or 2nd greatest rivalry in college football and one of the greatest rivalries in American sports overall. Really enjoyed this video!
It was fun to see happen, but I'd have to say the most legendary play in college football might be the Statue of Liberty play that Boise State pulled off to beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Tennessee/Georgia game at 8:40 was special because in the last minute or so Tennessee scored on a long pass to go up by 4 points, then Georgia scored on a long play to up by 3, then Tennessee scored on this this play as time ran out to win the game.

On the last play of a game with your team ahead, a defender should knock the ball to the ground. But it is natural for a defensive back to want to catch the ball for an interception. If you do go for the interception on the last play of the half or the game, you do run the risk of it bobbling off your hands into the receiver's arms. That would be rare but it happens more than you might think.

When the teams are kicking field goals, the kicking team puts in a bunch of big guys to block the other team's players so that the other team can't block the kick. When there is a turn over that gets past the line of scrimmage (seldom) and a fast guy from the other team gets the ball, there is no one on the kicking team that can catch him. A 330lb guy isn't catching a 180lb guy in a foot race, when all of the player are elite athletes.
That popped pass against auburn makes me rage every time I see it.

I will never forget that Michigan v Michigan State game. Half my family is U of M fans and the other MSU fans. My dad was making fun of my brother because Michigan was supposed to win but then Michigan State somehow go that to win the game. My dad was so disappointed. To show how much people care about sports that punter for Michigan was getting death threats. Love the competitive nature of American sports but some Americans take it too far.

American college football is a spectacle that shares few rivals, and none in the U.S. If you have the chance to visit The States, I strongly recommend you visit in the fall and find a major college football game to attend. I am biased. But, I cannot more strongly recommend College Station, Texas, and Texas A&M University. It is beyond a special place, and the gameday experience will change you. 5:27, we call that a Squib Kick (probably comes "Squib" from gun terminology). That happens when there are just seconds left and the kicking team is suspecting some kind of trickery by the returning team, so they intentionally kick a bad ball to disrupt their attempt at a miracle return.
