I've been to at least a dozen snow games living in Western New York and being a fan of the Buffalo Bills. Snow games are some of the best games to go to, including the 4-5 hours of tailgating outside the stadium before the game, and usually an hour more after the game waiting to get out of the parking lot. Between the barbecue, fires, and a few adult beverages while tailgating, everyone keeps pretty warm and has a good time. Usually in Buffalo going to a game is an all day event. There is an RV lot at the stadium that start filling up on Thursdays for the games on Sundays and Monday. If you have the proper gear you're pretty warm all day, and if you live around the teams that get this type of weather most everyone has their winter gear for just such occasions.
Snow doesn't necessarily mean bitterly cold temperatures. Although bitterly cold temperatures don't stop things; look up the Ice Bowl, the 1967 NFL Championship - brutal cold and Green Bay's pioneering subsurface heating system malfunctioned, leaving the field an ice and soil matrix the consistency of concrete.
oh yeah Snow in Buffalo gets ridiculous due to something called Lake Effect, the Cold Air coming from Lake Erie makes the snow worse. I dealt with that when i lived in Pennsylvania
We not only play American football in the snow, but occasionally football (soccer) as well. I attended a match in university when the temperature was below freezing and it snowed lightly. The players still wore shorts!
I live in North Dakota, one of the coldest states in the US, I can’t imagine playing in this much less sitting in the crowd 🥶 There’s another video compilation about the coldest games ever played. It includes temperatures. Also imagine, for some of these teams, they come from the south where temps are like 95 F or more (35 C) then the next day, going up north and playing in snow, sometimes in the -degrees. It’s such extremes. But also the opposite can be said. Teams use to playing in 65 F (18 C) then have to play in 95 F or more. Some times those temps can be over 100 F (37 C).
You should check out the Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami Dolphins game played on January 13, 2024. It was one of the coldest games on record. The wind chill was -27° F (-32 C). It was so cold that KC’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, helmet broke after one play. It shattered due to the cold. And the stands were pretty full with fans. 30 fans were treated at local hospital for frostbite and there were some amputations. Crazy huh!
@@PatrolNationThe temperature and wind chill during the 1981 AFC Championship Game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Diego Chargers were: Air temperature: 9°F below zero Wind chill -59°F Winds around 23-30mph most of the game and yes they played in this and yes fans actually were there including a few fans without shirts on
The Bills Colts game that was in here was crazy. That was the last year the starter was Tyrod Taylor but he was injured, so Nathan Peterman (ny Autocorrect went to Petermeme) started, and got injured, and the emergency QB Joe Webb had to take over, and I have no idea how the Bills won. Especially with that 43 yard extra point that Vinateri hit by aiming five yards wide...
From Michigan and the weather is just starting to turn, some of us love it. Acclimated all my life and if you dress right the crisp air just feels so good.
I love fall and winter. Grew up where all 4 seasons occur. Dress right in winter and you’re good to go or stay home and cozy. I could not live as happily where it’s warm year round.
Snow never hurt anyone who isn't alone in the wilderness or something. They aren't gonna freeze to death, it's a physical unpredictable sport. And it's fun.
Some parts of the country get colder than others. Pretty much anywhere along the border with Canada. New England, New York State, Michigan, Wisconsin, The Dakotas, Washington State. So the teams would be, the Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and I'm sure I missed some.
NFL games don't stop for weather other than lightning. Recently they have begun rescheduling or relocating games if the forecast a few days in advance suggests that attempting to get to the game will be a public safety hazard, but that's largely limited to hurricanes and actual blizzards. Heavy snow, frigid temperatures, or gusty wind alone isn't enough, though heavy snow and wind together sometimes is. Not sure what the temperatures were in any of the games in this video, but I would guess probably in the -10 to -5 C range (+14 to +23 F) for most. You can't get too much below that and have the real heavy snow; the air simply can't hold enough water for that to happen. There have been games much colder - at least down to -25 C (-13 F), possibly a little lower. In one game, known as the Ice Bowl, it was so cold that the refs stopped using their whistles to avoid having them freeze to their lips!
if you dress for the cold you wont be cold. So much fun. clean cool air in your lungs. you feel alive and full of energy. hot chocolate warms your tummy
Northern florida here and after living in a 100+ deg fishtank for the last 6months the temp just dropped into the 70s durring the day and low 60s at night and its gorgeous. We call it forball weather. Perfect to play in. Not to cold but cold enough so you dont constantly keep overheating.
My wife and I went to a Packers-Lions game at Green Bay, Dec 22, 1990. Lambeau field is an open stadium. No new snow that day. But officially, it was 3 degrees Fahrenheit [-16 C], wind chill 0 Fahrenheit [-18 C], at kickoff. The whole stands were a sea of breath fog. I wore my hunting clothes, boots, double and triple underwear, butt pad. Two ski masks. My breath blew up from inside my ski masks and froze on the inside of my glasses. I went to the bathroom once and cleaned them off, came back to my seat just in time to see Detroit score on a QB draw play, and then I fogged up again. A guy next to me had a giant plastic beer mug. The beer was already slushy-frozen. He knocked it over, it landed upside down at his feet. When he picked the mug back up, the beer just stayed there like a sand castle. Good stiff drink.
Coldest game I had been to was 0 degrees Fahrenheit and even lower wind chill. My beer froze before the end of the first quarter. Browns bears in Cleveland
The 1981-1982 AFC championship game in Cincinnati Ohio was played with wind chill factors of -59° Celsius. The Ohio river had frozen over, and people were walking across the ice to go between Ohio and Kentucky.
In January here in Wisconsin, our temperature can hit a low of -35 degrees F Or -37.2 C with the wind chill. We have people going to Green Bay Packers game and they remove their shirts during the game. They have painted on colors to support the team.
The snow isn't as bad as the rain. You should check out the video of worst weather conditions in the NFL, it's really impressive; hurricanes, blizzards, fog, and mud.
oh no you ant a crazy cold game? A few years ago the Green Bay Packers had a game that was -15 degrees Fahrenheit with -20 wind chill at Kickoff, and it never got to zero, the warmest it got was -5.
You have to understand, not only is football a winter sport but we played football in this kind of weather long before any of us even thought of playing for a college, let alone the NFL. This was working and playing at the same time. When you're on the field, your body temperature stays up, and when you're off the field, you have parkas and space heaters, and the bench may even be heated.
As a Michigander, I was in college driving to the UP up to Michigan Tech for a conference. I remember hearing about the high school games playing in like a foot and a half of snow. As a football player, In Michigan, The High School the state championship is in late November (Thanksgiving Weekend.), so it wasn't too bad for us in the lower penninsula . I didn't mind playing in the snow, I didn't like playing in the freezing rain. The only good thing is that I was an OLineman so I was one of the few people that wasn't too cold.
Just watched your biggest hits video. Last season (I think it was last season or the season before), two major incidents happened that resulted in more rules being changed. Idk much about American Football but, during a Dolphins game, their quarterback Tua suffered a very serious and traumatic concussion. It’s thought that he had one prior to that game but he was medically cleared to play that game. He was convulsing on the field. The NFL doesn’t typically cancel a game for anything, but they did for this. Everyone in that stadium, plus the players, and the viewers at home, adults and kids, all saw this. He’s back to playing again but I think he got another concussion again recently. Then during a Buffalo Bills game, a player by the name of Temar went into cardiac arrest. He miraculously survived and is still playing. My understanding is he got hit just right to trigger this. Even with all the padding, you’re still at high risk for CTE. CTE is what is thought to have contributed to a former NFL player named Aaron Hernandez committing a persons deletion. Problem is, the new rule change makes for some weird flags. But ultimately, I want players to be as safe as they can be in a sport that isn’t very safe to begin with. Long term heath shouldn’t come at the expense of others entertainment. I get this sport is kind of insane, but health of players should still be top priority, even for viewers.
I live just north of Detroit, we actually play indoors in a dome. That's an away game In Philadelphia! All the north east teams have to deal with this weather. Some teams, like Minnesota, play indoors as well. The Green Bay Packers are further north than us and play outside, but their all nuts. 😂
Those clips with Detroit were all the same game in Philly. Detroit actually plays inside a dome. Buffalo has had a few games cancelled because of snow where the team traveled to Detroit to play there instead. Happened just recently when Buffalo had 6+ feet of snow
Loved playing football in the snow growing up. Unfortunately more stadiums using fake grass and domes are removing the elements from games. Rain games are a blast too
@5:10 "if he gets his footing." Idk if they end up showing it but my titans lost a game 59-0 against the patriots in newengland like 15 years ago. Generally the only thing football isn’t played in is lightning. Now a year or two ago Buffalo had a home game that was delayed a day or two due to 5 FEET OF SNOW FORECAST. It was only delayed because the mayor of buffalo and governor of NY said it would impact public safety by taking officers and equipment away from snow removal.
Games are played in extreme cold as well. -10 to even -30 Fahrenheit is not an uncommon thing for NFL in Dec/Jan in some places. In fact the biggest difference for one team from one game to the next was The Chargers in 1981. They beat Miami in Miami and it was in the 80’s F and very humid to the next week losing at Cincinnati where the air temp was -7F and wind chill was in the negative 50F. More than a 90F difference in air temp from one week to the next. It was sunny and windy as hell. We played outside in the snow that day.
I find it odd that stadiums in the North don't have covered or retractable roofs due to all the snow they experience, but in the South with very little snow have retractable roofs!
Being from Queensland you might not know there are different kinds of snow. There is the wet snow most people know of but then there is powder. If you see them using leaf blowers to move it then it's powder. Powder is light, fluffy and dry.
One year I believe it was Norte Dame played in Miami at 90 degrees and the next week they played at Penn State at -10 degrees. A total of 100 degrees difference in 1 week
Look in bad weather games and check out a The Ice Bowl (ice frozen field. The heating element under the field broke. They were basically playing on several inches of solid ice).
In many snowy cities they keep open air stadiums thinking the weather will work for them. Statistically a team does do better if they embrace the bad weather. In fact they will do just about as badly as the visiting team. But it does give a slight edge. I personally like open air because it is more traditional. But many crowds do demand more now days.
NFL will postpone a game and move the game because of weather they have done that recently removed a game in Buffalo from Buffalo to Detroit because of a blizzard that happened before the game like 2 days before the game
One if the clips in there is notorious, it was the end of a really good playoff run and the beginning of a dynasty, for better or worse. The Raiders vs the Patriots; and for Raider Nation one of the worst moments to see ever on any highlight reel. They invented a rule called the Tuck Rule that only lasted for a couple of years, but it managed to screw our hopes for a Super Bowl run, and it also jump-started Tom Brady's career. (I hate that guy, just for the record.) But anyway, yeah, it's really awful for us to watch that clip cuz we really did get screwed.
Yeah. Football games aren't delayed or cancelled unless it's lightning or something life-threatening. If you haven't seen it already check out the "Ice Bowl". It was -15 Fahrenheit at kickoff. Yeah that was during Covid since the Packers home games are nearly always sold-out. The waiting list for Packers' season tickets is about 30 years.
The NFL will cancel games because of snow if there's a blizzard ahead of the game and it's bad enough that it could cause death.... They moved the game that was supposed to be in Buffalo in 2022 to Detroit because of the weather.
Last season the KC/Miami playoff game was -4 to start so that is what like -20C I think but it was really windy so with the windchill it was -27F. Not really much for snow it was just ridiculously cold and windy. I would rather play in 30F and snow than -4 with a windchill of -27. Actually pretty sure there was at least one fan that had to have fingers or toes amputated from frostbite over sitting in the stands watching that game
14:26 eagles fans are notorious for that toxic behaviour, also this video didn't include the foggiest game in nfl history in which players could not see the ball let alone each other lol
American Football is a winter sport and snow games are fun.
I’m from Buffalo - it’s just another day in the park for us.
I just wish every NFL stadium would have (at minimum) an overhang to protect the fans and everyone on the sideline from rain, snow, etc.
@@TommyBuskulic-u2kwhy? That's part of the experience.
I think LeSean McCoy is the best running back in the snow. He always seemed to have HUGE games when the weather was terrible.

I mentioned life threatening prior to the edit to include the part about Covid.
The detroit vs philladelphia clips were from a game in philly. Detroit plays in a domed stadium so weather is not a factor
14:26 eagles fans are notorious for that toxic behaviour, also this video didn't include the foggiest game in nfl history in which players could not see the ball let alone each other lol
11:48 TUCK RULE!
Detroit plays under a roof so that game was in Philly
Watch the CFL grey Cup games wild snow games
Should react to ICE BOWL GAME of 1967, Green Bay vs Dallas, -17 degrees classic game
You should react to Barry Sanders mini movie
Tough dudes! Notice a lot of players are in short sleeves exposing their bare skin!!! No long johns or long sleeves shirt or sweatshirts. 🥶🥶
