I never heard this role performed better. fortunately I no longer have to listen to it on VHS as I did in the late 90s! Dwayne Croft does not seem to have the renown he should.
I love the darker timbre as well. While Keenlyside and Mattei are great, I love Croft's and Finley's darker sound. Its more characteristic of a nobleman and one who likes getting around.
the ornamentation is indeed from a different version, but it works well here, in my opinion. it spices up the repeated "gia la speranza sola," and to me it doesn't "ruin" the build up at the end, but accents it.
don't know what I think of the ending...hmm, not sure about it at all- I take Solit's word over Jimmy Levine's any day on stuff like that, and he never did it. But Dwayne Croft can sing anything in my ear any day!
Oh my goodness glorious voice. Beautiful, legato, endearing, full, beautiful execution of the high pitch.
Thanks for posting! What a stunning piece & great bariton.
Brilliant! I love this particular piece. Thanks for posting.
Wonderful. Many thanks for posting. He is my favorite Baritone from today.

Nice compilation. Never can have too many of these on youtube. I'll use these to busk where people listen to this sort of thing!
Bravissimo
very nice.
wonderful, best yet i think
I love his voice as well. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Rodney Gilfry are also very good in this role.
I love those two...but Thomas Allen is my favorite.
UNBEATABLE!!!!

Mozart did write a different version... Think the baritone was singing part of that.
A sufficiently dark voice - a natural one as I hear it.)
bravo... not too dark, a singer with a good technique sounds like this
You're right. Though to me the 'variations' take away some of the dramatic build up in the finale. Still, an incredible performance!
have you heard his brother richard? hes a amazing tenor. They have very similar vocal qualities
No, but I'd be interested if anyone posted a video of Richard Croft's performance. I'd be able to compare then.
it's a bit too dark, his sound. he sounds like he's swallowing his voice.
@piratzrule I disagree. It's supposed to be a frenetic rage, any trace of seeming tame for tonality would defy the plan for the story.

they are on here. search richard croft.
Levine, Ô master
I'm a huge dwayne croft fan...but the coloratura at the end was pitiful
I wouldn't say it was painful. He sounded/looked nervous is what I noticed.
Too dark and a strange throaty sound to his voice. I much prefer Thomas Allen, Simon Keenlyside or Peter Mattei in the role.
Ever hear Rodney Gilfry as the role? He does an amazing job in my opinion
sounds throaty, also bad acting i see there.. prefer rodney gilfry on this act
