Thank you for calling out the confusing branding of the Samsung tablets. Its even worse on Amazon because they carry older product SKUs. I had to do way too much research to buy my parents a simple tablet to allow them an easier bedtime reading experience.

I remember when I was looking for their flagship tablet and having to decipher the difference between the Tab S9 and Tab S9 FE. The numbering is weird. They should also just name them based on the release year like the phones.

Wait until you find out about car names, the current mini isn't even a refresh of the 1959 mini its a completely different car. In reality people aren't dumb as rocks and do not have trouble with this stuff, no one is buying a tablet based on its model name anyway lol no one is buying android tablets at all.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE went on sale for $300 on Black Friday (and is on sale again right now on Amazon), and I like it quite a lot. S-pen included, 128GB standard, with microSD support, 1440p display, Wifi 6, IP68, works with most Tab S9 compatible accessories, and has a pretty good battery life (anecdotally, used it on a trip streaming Plex for long periods of time with the battery still in good shape at the end of hours long sessions). The only downsides I see are a lack of headphone jack (which at this point I'm used to...) and it uses an Exynos 1380 instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that the regular Tab S9 uses. I haven't had any issues with it so far, but I'm definitely wary of Exynos SoCs after previous experiences with other budget Samsung phones and tablets.

I bought one some three months ago, it came with the pen and cover that works as a stand. It is my first tablet ever, and regret why I didn't buy one earlier. The Samsung Notes app works seamless, in any meeting I've got all my info at my fingertips, can write down, even my crappy handwriting, and can reckonize my scribbles. The pen is a big thing for me, can work on my notebook with SolidWorks and write down measurements to make parts fit in my assembly. Yes I do have a S23-ULTRA that has the pen too, but that's too troublesome to use, but made me see that I needed a tablet.

@@whatitfeels. i’m honestly quite annoyed at the apple slander in this. If the whole point is for your parents/grandparents to have something that will work without issues and won’t be a hindrance in their life why not go with an iPad? I get that it is quite literally 3 times more expensive compared to the other tablets however it is a far superior product with guaranteed software updates and support. iPads are so reliable that Apples sales have slump in the past because people don’t feel the need to upgrade. I know people have their biases but in a video where people just need information on what to buy. Why be so biased? When he first talked about the iPad he mentioned how stupid Apple Pencil support and usb 2.0 is but for the Lenovo it wasn’t mentioned that is was usb 2.0 and it was a plus that it has stylist support. I think an ungodly amount of bloatware is more of a negative and it was just talked about like it was nothing with a monotone upbeat voice. It’s fine to point out flaws but I feel like LTT hates anything Apple does and when other companies do it it’s either ignored just lightly mentioned.

Lenovo Tab P12 for best large screen android tablet at around $300 (depending on accessories bundles and seem to be often on deep sales). I managed to snag one WITH the keyboard case and pen for only $350 (including taxes and shipping at the time). That same sale is running right now. It ended up being so useful for me as a deaf person since the mics on these was surprisingly a lot better than I expected, aiding the Google's Live Transcribe feature that allows me to stay involved in meetings and whatnot in real time :) One nice thing about this is that Best Buy also sells them so It was a great way for me to double check how I liked the form factor and the software before pulling the trigger (slowly losing vision so had to double check the accessibility features first). What finally got them? No more home button lol. They hated that thing, and were so happy to see a bigger screen-to-body ratio that they paid the premium upcharge from the 10th gen. Heart sank as soon as I saw this video drop. Spent over a month trying to navigate the budget tablet space looking for something I could use for a home assistant display as well as media consumption before landing on my choice about 3 weeks ago. I usually have horrible buyer's remorse so I was pretty scared to click on this video lol
Feels so good to be somewhat validated here though. Picked up the Lenovo Tab Plus from Best Buy during their Black Friday sale for $190 and have been loving it. The speakers really are dope, idk what it is but watching movies or listening to music in bed creates this weird illusion where it sounds like the tablet has surround sound without any headphones. Highly recommend it! The iPad does seem like a decent purchase too if you can get it for around the same price, although I was very close to buying the A9+ instead based on reddit's advice

    • @chillaman35

@Seed A lot of it was me wanting to have app integration for widgets and stuff and not be limited to just having to use a webpage. Fully kiosk also I don't think works on iPads. But mostly instead of "why wouldn't I get an iPad?" it was more "why would I?". Seems like the only benefit would have been a better processor, which I don't really need. Also highly doubt I could have found one for a similar price.
The main reason I went for the Lenovo was the built in stand, solid speakers, and 90hz 2K screen

But while their tablets have continued to improve non amazon apps like youtube and streaming service (except maybe netflix) just dont work well on them, despite being an android under the skin. I have both the Xiaomi Pad 5 and 6 - both have very good screens, CPU and audio. I find that Chinese tablets tend to have the best bang for buck, but you tend to have to wait a bit for a global ROM version before they turn up in my country (the UK).
I know this was coming from a "normie" angle, but the main way to extend the update life of Android tablets is via custom ROMs. It would have been nice if the Labs had discovered if a) the bootloader was unlockable and b) if there were any custom ROMs for the tablet.

So I am not an apple person. I however gifted my wife an ipad 2 10 years ago before we got married. by far the best feature of this tablet that you don't mention is the standby battery life. We don't use a tablet often but when we do it usually ends up being the insanely old ipad and not any of the newer android tablets due to the ipad being the only one that still has some battery life after being pulled out of a drawer a month later. I don't know what Apple did on that thing to make it so that it would only drain the battery when it is in use but I really do think it should be a consideration. Like charge the device up to 100% and then either power it off or just let it go into its low power mode and see how much power is still left after a week or two. It isn't a test you would do on a cell phone because you use it a lot but I feel it is something that should be tested on other devices like tablets and handheld consoles like the switch and steam deck. Many people aren't going to use one daily so it really sucks to want to use it for something only to find out you have to plug it in first, charge it up to at least 5%, and then finally use the device.

Tablets is the one area I generally give Apple the win on. I've had a few Android tablets, and have always used (and still use) an Android phone, but those Android tablets I've owned have universally all been complete and total crap. For my wife I got an 4th gen iPad Air four years ago, and I'll be honest that it's been solid this whole time. It as the same processor as the 10th gen featured in this video and I can say it runs everything perfectly fine even today.
The worst tablet I have ever owned goes to Amazon. No access to Google Play, and it barely functions it is so ridiculously slow. I have a Windows tablet with an Intel Atom processor running Windows 8 ... and it's exponentially more responsive (which is saying a lot). I would never, EVER, touch an Amazon tablet again.

I did, it was crap too. Not as crap, I just used the Amazon one as an example of the absolute worst. I've owned four Android tablets at various price points and they were all bad. I have not tried a flagship one though, but I'd never pay $1000 for a tablet. I'd just buy a PC at that point.

I could confirm the updater is malware infected after running some tests. Hardware wise its an okay-ish tablet, however the fact that they were hacked.. and instead of fixing their crap they pulled off a "sorry statement" (without any intention to fixing their mistake) - that is just unaccaptable.
